7 Benefit Spotlight: Volunteer & Make a Difference The Membership year started on Oct. 1, and there are still a few loyal ASME members who have not yet renewed their membership. If you haven t already done so, please take a moment to complete your renewal so that you continue to receive all the great benefits we chat about each month here in Member Savvy. Don t forget to ask your company s HR department if they support professional society memberships by reimbursing your annual dues. Remind them that ASME Membership is good for your professional development and great for their bottom line! Dear Members, *** My goal for Member Savvy each month is to share one aspect of ASME membership that provides value to you and a return on your annual dues investment. I believe the ROI is obvious with technical benefits like ME Magazine, ASME WorkSmart SM and SmartBrief. However, there are some benefits that offer the greatest value of all the personal satisfaction and professional benefits of volunteering and giving back to your profession. ASME offers many ways for you to volunteer and get involved. You can share your time, your muscle, your mind, or your wisdom -- or all four! ASME has a number of ways for you to give back to the engineering profession, a few of which I ll share with you right now. Trust me -- the more you give back, the more you get back, and the more value you ll receive from your membership: Codes & Standards Committees Lend your expertise and work with the world s best and brightest mechanical engineers on some of today s greatest technical advancements and most challenging problems. You ll be contributing to a consensus process to develop the best codes and standards, making the world safer for all. All levels of experience are encouraged to take part. ASME.org Participate in an existing online group or create your own group based on a specific engineering discipline, your interests, or even your university alumni. You manage group participation, content, tools, and activities. The rich suite of ASME.org functionalities makes it easy for you to lead and grow your own group. It s a great opportunity to network, collaborate, and showcase your leadership skills to like-minded engineers. Your Local Section or Technical Division Expand your professional network, get access to the hidden job market, and work on programs and services with friends and colleagues specific to your chosen discipline or at the local grassroots level. Engineering for Change (E4C) -- an initiative that will connect people facing quality-of-life challenges (e.g. clean water, sanitation, housing, energy) in local, under-served communities in the U.S. and around the world... with engineers who have the willingness to volunteer -- but little time to travel to remote locations -- and the know-how to develop appropriate engineering solutions. E4C's website is in the beta testing stage, but you can learn more and keep up-to-date by visiting Mentoring - Get matched with one or more ME students or early career engineers, and work with them oneon-one. You will be directly helping someone with engineering or career related issues, imparting your knowledge & experience to a new generation of mechanical engineers. There are so many more opportunities to volunteer with ASME. Check out the volunteer resource pages to learn more. The goal for your legacy should be to make a lasting difference in the world. ASME is here to help you create your legacy and achieve that goal. Volunteer today! Warmest regards, Mike Michael Kreisberg ASME Section News 7

9 2013 Professional Development Seminar December 7th, 2013 Brett Ellis: Design and Engineering of PolyEthylene Terephthalate (PET) Coke Bottles Abstract: Patented in 1978, the PolyEthylene Terephthalate (PET) bottle is a ubiquitous, yet rarely studied engineering achievement. This presentation reveals engineering aspects relevant to PET bottles by examining PET bottles utilized for carbonated soft drink and water (i.e., unpressurized) applications. Particular focus will be given to PET materials, injection and blow molding processes, and performance requirements (e.g., maintaining carbonation levels, stresses caused by internal pressure, buckling resistance to vertical loads, caustic stress crack resistance). Biography: Brett Ellis is a Senior Associate at Exponent Engineering and Scientific Consulting and has worked in the mechanical engineering field for 16 years, with 12 years of experience in industry. He specializes in stress analysis, solid mechanics, finite element modeling, statistical analysis, and design. Brett Ellis has highly specialized expertise in the design, commercialization, and manufacture of PolyEthylene Terephthalate (PET) carbonated soft drink and water bottles utilizing injection molding and blow molding manufacturing processes. His work with PET bottles extended to the design and analysis of blow molds, injection molds, machine components, and secondary packaging. He has implemented quality and production support systems, such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Design of Experiments (DOE). Brett Ellis has completed his doctoral studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology and his degree will be conferred in December During his dissertation work he developed and implemented a computational framework to design Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) materials and structures to withstand blast and impact loads. The computational framework consisted of two major components: (1) development and validation of multi-scale finite element models to predict the response of UHPC panels to blast and impact loads; and (2) development of robust material and structural design algorithms to determine properties, structures, and processing steps which satisfy specified blast and impact performance criteria. Mr. Ellis is fluent in a variety of programming and scripting languages including, but not limited to, Python, FORTRAN, MatLab, and BASH. ASME Section News 9
