2 P a g e 2 C a l i f o r n i a C e n t r a l C o a s t C h a p t e r A P W A A p r i l N e w s Life as I Find It Thought. It is the basis upon which all that we, as engineers and design professionals, offer. In both public and private service we are engaged by clients and agencies for our clarity of thought and focus, our ability to construct, explore, ponder and select in our minds. Thought is what leads us to solutions. The better our thought, the better our solutions are. Think about how good we feel following a period of deep thought; the elation of discovery and solution is fulfilling. We enjoy the pleasure of connecting the dots and seeing the picture finally emerge in our minds. We ve gone somewhere and come back with something we did not embark with. We are high. Some people are blessed with focus that yields uninterruptable thought. They can think with clarity in a hurricane. Most of us can t. Our thought structure is intricate, delicate and ephemeral, like the web of a garden spider, and it is as easily damaged or destroyed. Like the environment that the spider requires to weave its best creations, our environment must be calm and without trespass. It is often when we enjoy these ideal conditions that we reach the deep thought where the elegant solutions reside. Thought takes energy, and more importantly, time. Like the time it takes the spider to weave its web there is a process we must go through to construct our thoughts. When that process is interrupted we cannot simply resume where we left off. We must rebuild to where we were and continue from there. Each time we are forced to stop and rebuild we use up some of the precious time we have set aside, and often we simply run out. And again like the spiders web, our thoughts become a patch work of repairs, not the masterpiece of undisturbed effort. We must respect the thought of others. Just as we are often unaware of the myriad webs under construction in our gardens we are also mindless of the thought processes going around us. When we move about our offices checking in, chatting and phoning our colleagues, we leave in our wake the broken webs of valuable thought. Sending comments and questions by would enable the recipient to process them at their convenience. We must protect the environment where we build thought. Often we unwittingly construct our world in a way that destroys thought. Alerts for s, texts and calendar appointments can be constant and relentless interrupters if we allow them. The good news, we are in control. We can turn off the alerts, and prevent the distractions. We can turn our desks to face away from traffic. We can request those around us be mindful of our need to focus. Deep thought is under assault these days; not because people are selfish, or malicious. We are simply humans, and in our desire for interaction we are not always conscious of the fragile nature of thought, the intrinsic value of deep thought and the ease with which it is impaired. Great solutions often come from collaboration and interaction so communication is essential. If we are to deliver the very best of what we have to offer, our thought; we must be disciplined in the ways we communicate and interact and we must create and maintain environments where our best thoughts can be constructed. - Michael Cannon, President
