FEBRUARY 2017 It s The President's Message hard to believe we re half way through the ASHRAE year and judging from your comments, it s been a successful several months. As a Chapter, we ve enjoyed tours of the Carrier Dome and new OCM BOCES Liverpool facility, held three Young Engineers of America events at the 315 Brewery in Camillus, a bowling outing at Revolutions and most recently a Syracuse University basketball game in the graciously donated Carrier Box as well as a successful transition to the Dinosaur BBQ location for our monthly Program meetings. Additionally our Student Activities program is running on all cylinders as they prepare to launch ASHRAE s first ever SmartStart Weekend April 1-2 at the Syracuse University Center of Excellence. Past Society President David Underwood has committed to attend and speak at the event as we aim to recruit the next generation of HVAC/R engineers. I m confident you ll find the second half of the year equally engaging and encourage you to participate in the coming events. As you read this newsletter, please take note of the upcoming ASHRAE Learning Institute 2017 Online Course Series offering courses throughout One and Two Part courses are available and include such topics as The Commissioning Process in New and Existing Buildings and Standard HVAC / Mechanical Design. In closing, our February 8 th Evening Program Meeting is proving to be a topic of interest as Rick Siberine of NUPI Americas presents Polypropylene PP-R and PP-RCT Pressure Pipe & Fitting Solutions. Plastic piping is gaining acceptance as an alternative solution to traditional copper, steel and iron pipe system designs and this presentation offers 1-PDH credit. Please plan to join us in the Main Room upstairs at the Dinosaur BBQ and come early for the ever popular Social Happy Hour where drinks are on the house from 5:30 to 6:30pm. Mark Yonnick, CNY ASHRAE Chapter President

FEBRUARY 2017 PROGRAM CHAIR UPDATE: In our continuing effort to provide the most value for your participation in CNY ASHRAE, we plan to offer "2 for 1 PDH Programs" beginning in March. In addition to our Main Program speaker & presentation, we intend to offer 45 minutes in duration that will offer at least 1-PDH credit. These Mini-Programs will start at 5:30pm and coincide with our Social Hour Open Bar. The evening dinner and Main Program presentation will start at 6:30pm as usual and conclude at approximately 8:00pm. If all goes well, we'll continue to offer the "2 for 1 PDH Programs" for the remaining April and May meetings as well. We hope to see you there and welcome any feedback. Steve Sill, Chapter Vice President & Program Chair A NOTE FROM THE TREASURER I'd like to thank our members for the continued support and involvement in our chapter. At our last meeting we met with Morgan Stanley advisors to review our investment accounts and offer their guidance to optimize our investments. Based on discussions we transferred $19, from our Cash Account into our Investment Account in order to strength our portfolio. As far as our other accounts, all are still in good standing and fiscally sound for upcoming expenses (ie: taxes, clambake, etc...). I hope that we can continue 2017 strong and promote success for our chapter as we enter the final months of the ASHRAE year. Geoff Sincavage, Chapter Treasurer

FEBRUARY 2017 YEA UPDATE January YEA Event SU Basketball game: The chapter held its third YEA event of the year on January 14 th, The event was held at the Carrier Dome in the Carrier box during the Syracuse Boston College basketball game. This event was sponsored by Carrier which included the use of the box. There were 22 attendees which included current and potential members. Attendees were able to meet new people and learn about their roles in the ASHRAE as well as the HVAC industry. We hope to see attendees at future meetings and YEA events. If you have any questions about YEA or suggestions for future YEA events, please contact Matt Clark, YEA Chair

FEBRUARY 2017 CHAPTER TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER CHAIR REPORT ASHRAE Learning Institute Courses The ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) offers a wide range of professional development seminars and short courses. ALI seminars/courses provide high-quality, authoritative and credible technical information, with all content developed through ALI's peer-review process. ALI instructors are ASHRAE members, college or university faculty, and/or full-time professional engineers. As a result, each instructor's availability depends greatly on his or her individual schedule. The ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) courses may be accepted for continuing education credits by states, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), and other credentialing organizations. Please check with a specific state or organization for more information about its continuing education requirements. Certificates of Attendance for each course will be included for distribution to all participants. The complete course catalog is available on the ASHRAE website at: Charles Bertuch, CTTC Chair

FEBRUARY 2017 Research Promotion Update Start thinking about warmer times and block off June 8 th on your calendar. That is the official date of the annual CNY ASHRAE Golf Tournament and Clambake! We continue to look to grow these events, as they re not only important in reaching our Research Promotion goals, but they allow us to showcase the strong bond our ASHRAE members have together (not to mention us eating too many clams and having a few beers). It s never too early to start spreading the word about this, we thank you for all your help. Congratulations to Geoff Sincavage on winning January s 50/50 raffle. If he wins again in February, we ll have to consider putting our treasurer under investigation. Be sure to bring some extra cash with you to next meeting to try your luck in next month s raffle. The proceeds each month are currently being compiled so that they can be put towards an additional Research Promotion event to be held at a later date. We ve already had a few members donate their own resources to this year s RP campaign, their names are listed below: Paul C Sack Steven C. Sill Gary J. Archer Chris Devins Ronald L. Westbrook William F. Walter Geoff Sincavage James A. Hart E. M. Cahill Co Mark C. Yonnick Carrier Corporation United Technologies We d like to thank these people for their generosity. For those who haven t donated yet, please consider helping our chapter reach our goals for this year s campaign. No donation is too small, and we thank you in advance for your donations! Chris Devins, Research Promotion Chair Donations can be made towards the campaign at the link below: And click the Online Contribution Form link near the top of the webpage.
