2 2 K n i g h t & N e r d y, T e a m What is FIRST Robotics? FIRST stands for For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. First Robotics Competitions (FRC), are competitions in which students in grades nine through twelve compete with teams from around the world. FIRST s mission statement is Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. They fulfill their mission by challenging the students to solve real world problems with the same skills as real world engineers. Every year, FIRST provides scholarships to the juniors and seniors in the FIRST program. In 2015, $20 million in scholarships are available to those that apply. On average, 99% of students in FIRST graduate high school and 89% go on to college. The national average is only 65% of high school graduates going on to college.

Knight & Nerdy is a student run FIRST Robotics Club at East Ridge High School that encourages the study and application of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Our club was founded in 2008, starting with a just few members and has grown continuously to our current membership of approximately 75 students. Each year, FIRST robotics announces a new competition. As a team, we design, build, and program a robot to perform prescribed tasks and compete against teams from around the world. During the 2013 year season we competed at the South Florida Regional in Ft. Lauderdale, placing 9 th out of 48 teams and competing in the semi-finals. In 2014, we were able to place 11 th out of 64 teams at the Orlando Regional, recognized as the most challenging regional in Florida. The team also participated in Tampa Bay Roboticon 2015 and was on the winning alliance, placing first overall. As a robotics team, we actively learn the importance of STEM. Knight & Nerdy exposes these students to an environment which requires them to use public speaking and writing skills. Students apply practical problem solving skills to solve real engineering challenges. Students respectfully debate the robot design, address mechanical and programming issues, and work together in situations that are both friendly and competitive. Students work directly with professional mentors who are engineers, computer programmers and designers. As a result, the members have a realistic and professional way of handling situations in the real world.

Your donation will: Enable Knight & Nerdy to attend regional and national competitions. Each competition has a $5,000 entry fee. Supply the tools and material to design and build a robot. The robot weighs 120 pounds. It is built out of aluminum and steel and requires industrial tools such as drill presses, saws, and welders, as well as several hand tools.
