This is the reasn why we strngly suggest yu start with acquiring yur ancestr s Italian birth certificate and his/her naturalizatin paper. ONLY IF YOU ARE SURE THAT HIS/HER NATURALIZATION DIDN T HAPPEN BEFORE YOUR INTERMEDIATE ANCESTOR S BIRTH, YOU MAY COLLECT ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTS. IMPORTANT: A persn brn befre 01/01/1948 can claim Italian citizenship nly frm his/her father, wh was nt a naturalized citizen f anther cuntry befre his child s birth. A wman can transfer citizenship nly t her children brn after 01/01/1948, if she was nt a naturalized citizen f anther cuntry befre her child s birth. "Italian citizen at the time f the descendant s birth" means that he/she did nt acquire any ther citizenship thrugh naturalizatin befre his/her descendant s birth. If yur great grandfather became a naturalized U.S. citizen befre June 14, 1912 yu are nt entitled t the Italian citizenship, even if yur ancestr was brn befre yur great grandfather s naturalizatin. 4 GUIDELINES FOR ALL CATEGORIES HOW TO REQUEST THE ANCESTOR S BIRTH/MARRIAGE/DEATH CERTIFICATES FROM ITALY 1) Write t the Cmune where the Italian ancestr was brn, requesting a birth certificate in frmat internazinale r the estratt per riassunt (shwing his/her father s and mther s names), enclse a stamped, self addressed envelpe. Search the address f the Cmune n the page: Address yur request t: COMUNE DI Uffici Anagrafe Stat Civile (Zip cde) (City) (Prvince f) ITALY A frm t request vital recrds at the Cmune fr Italian citizens can be fund in the sectin VITAL RECORDS HOW TO REQUEST THE ANCESTOR S BIRTH/MARRIAGE/DEATH CERTIFICATES IN THE U.S.A. All certificates must be LONG FORM in a CERTIFIED COPY. These certificates may be requested frm the Office f Vital Statistics f the Cunty r f the State where the birth/marriage/death tk place. Please check that the birth certificate lists the city f birth, parents names, and that it was issued by a gvernment agency. Certificates reprting nly the Cunty f birth will nt be accepted. APOSTILLE U.S. Birth/Marriage/Death recrds related t the Italian side (starting with yur ancestr and ending with yu - including the "intermediate" ancestrs wh are nt applying fr citizenship - and any Italian brn spuses) must be legalized with an "APOSTILLE" by the Secretary f State f the State in which the dcument has been issued: it is nt a stamp n the certificate. The Certificate f Naturalizatin and/r similar dcumentatin desn t need t be legalized by the APOSTILLE. THE APOSTILLE desn t need t be translated. VITAL RECORDS IN LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ITALIAN Birth, marriage, death certificates relating t the whle Italian side ( i.e. frm yur ancestr up t yu, including the nes relating t intermediate ancestrs wh are nt applying fr citizenship) must be translated int Italian. Dcuments that d nt need t be translated are thse relating t the nn-italian side and the U.S. Certificate f Naturalizatin r any statement releasing infrmatin n the naturalizatin status f the ancestrs. 5 IF YOU ARE MARRIED Yu have t submit a certified cpy f the Marriage license/certificatin : please check that yur marriage certificate lists bth grm and bride s city f birth, parents names, date and place f the marriage. If nt, yu must prvide in additin a certified cpy f the Marriage applicatin and recrd. Bth the marriage license and the certificate must be legalized with the Apstille.. Please prvide a simple certified cpy f yur spuse s birth certificate (n translatin and Apstille are required fr it) with a phtcpy f his/her American passprt r ID card/driver s license. Fill ut the Applicatin Frm t register marriage certificates in Italy that can be fund in the sectin VITAL RECORDS. IF YOUR MARRIAGE TOOK PLACE BEFORE APRIL 27, 1983 and yur wife expresses a will t be recgnized as an Italian citizen, she needs t cme PERSONALLY t yur scheduled appintment. She has t submit a certified cpy f her lng frm birth certificate, translated int Italian and legalized with the Apstille. An ID with a pht and utility bill is required. A frm must be filled ut and signed befre an Official f the Cnsulate General. DISCREPANCIES Check carefully all the dcuments wrd fr wrd t make sure that n discrepancies appear. Discrepancies are typgraphical errrs, missing middle names, use f nicknames, etc. Each change r errr fund in yur ancestr s dcuments must be crrected, wherever pssible, thrugh an fficial affidavit t amend a recrd at the Vital Statistics Office that issued that dcument. Yu can als ask fr an a.k.a. (als knwn as) with all the names that yur ancestr used during his/her all life. The Vital Recrds Office can prvide it adding them n the riginal certificate. Any discrepancies in yur wn dcuments must be amended and crrected. This includes yur wn name, yur spuse s name, and yur parents names. If relevant discrepancies are fund in yur wn certificates yur applicatin will nt be accepted. THE U.S.A. NATURALIZATION The Naturalizatin f yur ancestr brn in Italy is crucial fr the recgnitin f yur Italian citizenship. An accurate search has t be perfrmed n this matter. If yur ancestr is still alive and is nt an American citizen, yu can present his Italian passprt and current U.S. permanent resident card ( green card ). Otherwise, yu must present: The CERTIFICATE OF NATURALIZATION and/r a certified cpy f his petitin fr naturalizatin and ath f allegiance (which is an fficial dcument bearing the red ribbn and gld seal f NARA). If yu cannt acquire a certificate f naturalizatin r a petitin, yu must prvide an Official statement f n recrd (riginal, nt a phtcpy, and with the Office Seal) t be requested t each Office cntacted. Curt Cunty in which he resided and in which his child was brn. It can als prvide the Certificate f Naturalizatin. 3. The USCIS Genealgy Prgram, in Washingtn, DC ( This ffice can send yu a cpy f yur ancestr s certificate r alien registratin card, which must be supprted by a Cunty r NARA recrd, because USCIS will nly release a certified cpy t the persn wh received citizenship. 4. The Natinal Archives in Washingtn, DC ( This ffice cllects dcuments frm all ver the United States: yu culd btain a certified cpy f yur ancestr s petitin fr naturalizatin and ath f allegiance frm the Natinal Archives. Dcuments frm NARA must be certified cpies, bearing the red ribbn and gld seal f NARA. If n recrd is fund, they shuld issue a letter stating this. 5. The Reginal Office f the Natinal Archives. This ffice keeps Federal dcuments related t the States in their area f jurisdictin. Yu can als btain a certified cpy f yur ancestr s petitin fr naturalizatin and ath f allegiance. Dcuments frm NARA must be certified cpies, bearing the red ribbn and gld seal f NARA. If the Research shws NO RECORD, NARA can issue the alien registratin card. 6. Census recrd.
