3 TRY SOMETHING NEW! THE FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING This art course is designed to give instructions in the techniques of drawing for the beginner, the intermediate and the advanced student. Students will learn to draw directly from a series of simple objects, how to look at an object as an artist and capture the object on paper. Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing with a focus on structure, shape, contour, depth, light, tone, value, texture, art of the line, media and hand/eye coordination. A materials list will be given at the first class. Ages 15 and up. Saturdays,12:30 3:30 PM July 7 -- August 4, 2018 (5 sessions) $140 members/ $155 nonmembers Instructor: Joan Rushin Folsom COLOR AND TEXTURE PAINTING TECHNIQUES Enhance your drawings and paintings with brilliant color and expressive textural techniques with a new approach! Wertheimer Limit: 12 students ACRYLIC PAINTING During this 4-week course, students will learn how to paint one specific painting in acrylic each week, then apply their new knowledge and increased skill in a painting of their own! Saturdays, 2:00 4:30 PM July 7 -- July 28, 2018 $80 members/ $90 nonmembers Instructor: Rachel Emde KILN CARVED FUSED GLASS Kiln carving is a process that achieves texture or a sculpted look in glass. Students will learn how to kiln carve unique designs into their cast glass using a kiln fiber material, the heat of the kiln and gravity. Small jewelry sized pieces will be completed and then students may complete a transparent glass kiln design of their choice. Final project will be 6 x6! Instructor will bring ideas and designs for students to use, but students are encouraged to bring ideas for their glass projects. Sunday, 1:00-4:00 PM August 5, 2018 (1 session) $ 70 member/ $85 nonmember Instructor: Ali Rogan FUSED GLASS JEWELRY Students will learn to create fused glass jewelry using specialty fusing glass plus iridized and dichroic glass to create one-of-a-kind artwork. Learn the fun, fusing tricks and secrets for making expensive jewelry while creating beautiful wearable artwork. Completed work will include jewelry findings and a pendant cord. 4 Summer ARTventures (757) PFAC is hosting TEN incredible weeks of summer ARTventures for children, ages Campers can enjoy one or multiple weeks of camp at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. Camps run weekly June 26 August 31 June Fuzzy Fibers This is not your grandma s sewing class! Weave abstract art, Chagall inspired tapestry, design and sew a pizza pillow, make rad 80s-inspired string art, tie dye a tote bag, and more! July 5 & 6 (Two-Day Camp) What a Mess! Make slime, splatter paint, shoot arrows dipped in paint, make a batik and a feathery Chagall-inspired roster, and more! July Mini Masterpieces Create art in the style of famous artists like Chagall, Romero Britto, Chihuly, Picasso, Calder, Kandinsky, and more! July Passport to Europe Can t go to Europe to check out the art? No worries, we will bring it to you! Finger paint a cave painting by candlelight, paint en plein air, decorate a beret, have your face painted like a mime and use pastels to create your own version of Paris Through the Window. July Sculpt it! No flat artwork here! Air-dry clay animals, paper mache desserts, wire mobiles, cardboard masks, 3-d Blue House inspired by our Chagall exhibition and a burger with a secret compartment! July 31 August 3 Fantasy Fun Painted dragon s eyes, adorable aliens, a hybrid animal inspired by Chagall, monster masks, rainbow geodes and more! August 7 10 Rock, paper, scissors.art! Do rocks beat paper? Find out in this camp! Embellish rocks and hide them in the park (you ll keep some too), colorful Chagall collage, paper weaving, papier mache masks, air-dry clay, and more! August Cirque de PFAC! Lions and tigers, and bears, oh my! And that s just the beginning of this Chagall-themed camp! Paint your face to look like your favorite animal, make a clown or masquerade mask, paper mache candy apple, and more! Clay Camps Young potters and sculptors will learn the basics of ceramics in our clay camps. Each week will have different projects. Feel free to take one week, or more! 5 FAMILY FUN WORKSHOPS KIDS BEGINNING CERAMICS During this 6-week course, students ages 5-12 will learn to throw on the wheel, and be given the opportunity to use various hand-building techniques including coil, pinch, and slab to add detail to their thrown pieces. After the ceramic pieces are complete, students will apply glaze and the pieces will be fired. Please allow 2 weeks for pick-up for drying and firing. Saturdays, 10:00 AM 12:30 PM July 7 -- August 11, 2018 (6 sessions) $165 members / $180 nonmembers Instructor: Rachel Emde SUSTAINABLE HANDMADE PAPER WORKSHOP In this workshop families will learn how to transform recycled paper and natural plant fibers into beautiful hand-pulled sheets of paper. This family friendly workshop is designed for adults and children (assisted by an adult) of all ages to learn about the paper making process while creating their own unique paper. Participants may bring recycled paper to be used in the project (not required). All materials are provided. Saturday, 10:00 AM --12:00 PM July 7, 2018 (1 session) $ 25 per family with membership/ $35 per family without membership Instructor: Joshua Ostraff Limit: 8 families 3-DIMENSIONAL MANGA (9+) Draw and paint Manga characters. Then make them come to life by turning your creation into 3-D characters and animals. We will work on understanding color theory, elements of design, and transforming 2-D design into a 3-D sculpture. Bring a snack to each class. Saturdays, 2:00-4:30 PM August 11- August 25, 2018 (3 Sessions) $ 115 members/ $130 nonmembers Instructor: Lee G. Wertheimer GESTALT T-SHIRT PRINTING In this workshop participants will learn about 5 main principles of the gestalt theory to help create simple visual symbols and designs. Each participant will create a logo or symbol to be used in a quick, affordable, and simple tee-shirt printing process. Each participant will need to bring a teeshirt (used is fine) to print on, all other materials are provided. This is a family friendly workshop for adults and children (who are assisted by their parent/adult). 6 POTTERY CLASSES PFAC's Beginning Pottery program builds a solid foundation in wheel throwing and the basics of hand building. Class is geared for students with no clay experience or for those who have taken a class and would like to continue to improve their skills. PLAY WITH CLAY Take a spin on the wheel, sculpt by hand - or both! Our Teaching Artist will guide you through the basics and you might even finish a piece of your very own! "BYOB" or purchase by the bottle at the front desk. Class fee includes one glazed and fired piece. ONE DAY CLASS! Per Session: $35 member/$45 nonmember Thursday, June 14, 6-8pm CLAY SAMPLER In this beginning class, students are introduced to throwing on the wheel and hand building techniques. Students will create two pieces on the wheel and two pieces by hand. The purpose of this class is to introduce basic ceramic concepts and to help students decide whether they d like to pursue future classes in wheel or hand-building. Tuesdays, 6:30 8:30 PM July July 31, 2018 $100 members/ $115 nonmembers Instructor: Kourtenay Plummer Ages 15+ BEGINNING WHEEL During this 4-week course, students will learn and utilize beginning throwing techniques including, but not limited to: centering, pulling a wall, pulling a handle, trimming, adding details and glazing. Wednesdays, 6:00 8:30 PM July August 1, 2018 $100 members/ $125 nonmembers Instructor: Rachel Emde Ages 15+ BEGINNING HANDBUILDING During this 4-week course, students will learn to create ceramic pieces using hand-building techniques including, but not limited to: pinch pot, coil method, slab method, adding details and glazing. 7 POTTERY Pottery Students at PFAC explore a wide variety of forms and methods. It is gratifying to drink your morning coffee out of a mug you threw yourself, or to serve dinner to your family on an array of dinner plates of your own design and handiwork. Some students choose to focus on more abstract creations rather than functional pieces, drawing their inspiration from nature and the world surrounding them. PFAC has two well-equipped clay studios within our Museum to meet the needs of beginning to advanced potters. INDEPENDENT STUDY For clay students with enough experience to work without instruction, although a studio monitor will be on site. Thursdays, 6-8:30 PM July August 2, 2018 $95 member/ $110 nonmember SURFACE SKILLS In this class for multiple skill levels, student will explore or expand experience with surface treatments: carving, sgraffito, image transfer/ monoprinting, layering underglaze colors and marbling clay. Students will work with surface treatments, design concepts, and form construction. Wednesdays, 10:00 AM 1:00 PM July 11, 18, 25, August 1 $130 member/ $145 nonmember Instructor: Millie Arthur Limit: 12 students COOKING WITH POLYMER CLAY OPEN STUDIO FRIDAYS, 10:00 AM-12:00 PM, SATURDAYS, 1:00-3:00PM OFFERED TO CURRENT STUDENTS ENROLLED IN AN ADULT CLAY CLASS AT PFAC DURING THE CURRENT WINTER SESSION TO PRACTICE TECHNIQUES OR PREVIOUS FALL SESSION TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO FINISH PIECES IN PROGRESS. IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR STUDENTS TO PRODUCE NEW WORK, JUST TO FINISH PIECES IN PROGRESS. NO INSTRUCTION IS OFFERED DURING OPEN STUDIO. STUDENTS MUST SIGN IN UPON ARRIVAL AT PFAC AND SIGN OUT AT DEPARTURE. STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEANING UP AT THE END OF OPEN STUDIO HOURS. ALL WORK MUST BE DONE ON PREMISES. $10 PER SESSION. A PUNCH CARD FOR 3 SESSIONS MAY BE PURCHASED FOR $24. INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED CERAMICS This class emphasizes improvement for moderately experienced wheel-throwers, but hand-builders are also welcome. Students who begin a pot without feeling certain of the outcome will be guided towards throwing taller, wider, and thinner, increasing their control over results. They will also be able to undertake medium-sized or larger hand-building projects. Hand-built features, texture, and/or slip decoration can enhance your work. Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:00 8:30 PM July August 2, 2018 (8 sessions, 2 nights per week) $200 members/ $220 non-members Instructor: Marshall Turner Limit: 12 students Create miniature food from clay in this 2 session class. Students will learn to roll, sculpt, color, bake and glaze polymer clay to create two miniature pizzas. Jewelry findings and hooks can be added to the pizzas to transform them into a pair of earrings, pendants, keychains or magnets. Once students understand the process, they can go on to create all sorts of cool jewelry on their own! Ages 12 and up are welcome to attend this class. We will supply all materials. 8 GENERAL INFORMATION For PFAC faculty information and answers to other questions, visit our website at or call REGISTRATION As a privilege of PFAC membership, members enjoy reduced tuition and early registration. Classes that do not meet minimum registration requirements may be canceled one week prior to meeting. Minimum registration is generally six students; average class size is 12. REFUNDS Full tuition refund/credit, less a $25 administrative fee will be available if a students cancels 10 days before a class begins. After that time a 50% refund/credit will be available; after the second class, no refund. For workshops of five sessions or less, no refund is available after the first class. Not attending a class does NOT constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Make up classes are handled on an individual basis, with Management approval. MEMBERSHIP For a one-time, annual cost, our members receive free admission to all exhibits, invitations to select events, discounts on classes and in the gift shop, early class registration and guest passes. Circle members make annual tax-deductible gifts in the the form of cash, stocks or in-kind goods and services valued at $150 or more.
