3 Education Catalogue INDEPENDENT STUDY* Mondays, 10:00AM 1:00 PM Session 1: January 9 February 27 Session 2: March 6 April 24 *No class on MLK Day / Prorated (Term 1) This class is designed for the intermediate and advanced students that have previous clay experience at Pewabic Education. This class is fit only for independent workers. Permission from Education Staff is required to register for this course. MONDAY PM WHEEL* Tuesdays, 6:00PM 9:00PM Kevin Kwiatkowski Session 1: January 9 February 27 Session 2: March 6 April 24 *No class on MLK Day / Prorated (Term 1) Beginning techniques such as centering, compressing and shaping, as well as more advanced techniques such as attaching multiple parts to one object, throwing lids, and surface decoration will be covered. GLAZE: DIG YOUR OWN! Mondays, 6:00PM 9:00PM Alex Thullen Session 2: March 6 April 24 In this class, students will learn techniques to create their own slips and glazes using locally sourced materials from nature, and their own environments. Students will learn about digging and preparing their own clay, as well as methods for identifying what makes good glaze materials, and how to process these materials into useful ingredients for ceramic applications. This will be an advanced hands-on class, so previous glaze mixing experience, and familiarity with the glaze lab is a prerequisite. HAND-BUILDING: SURFACE APPLICATION Tuesdays, 10:00AM 1:00 PM Lindsey Dezman Session 1: January 10 February 28 This course will develop a strong skill base to enable successful construction of functional and sculptural ceramic objects. Students will learn to use the hand-building processes of pinch, slab, coil and hollowing. Students will also utilize the surface techniques of Mishima, sgraffito, stenciling, wax resist, inlay, decals, use of the spray booth and glazing.

Tuesdays, 10:00AM 1:00 PM Lindsey Dezman Session 2: March 7 April 25 Students will make ceramic works for the outdoors by using a clay recipe specifically designated to survive the outdoors and the shifting of seasons. As a previously offered course, this class will focus upon various hand building techniques to create sculptures, orbs, birdbaths and totems to sit within your garden. TUESDAY PM SCULPTURAL WHEEL Tuesdays, 6:00PM 9:00PM TBD Session 1: January 10 February 28 Session 2: March 7 April 25 Beginning techniques such as centering, compressing and shaping, as well as more advanced techniques such as attaching multiple parts to one object, throwing lids, and surface decoration will be covered. Glaze techniques will also be explored. 5 Education Catalogue TILE MAKING Wednesdays, 6:00PM 9:00PM Dave McGee Session 1: January 11 March 1 Session 2: March 8 April 26 Taught by a Pewabic Designer, this class will cover the way Pewabic s Fabrication department traditionally designs, fabricates and glazes tiles. Sculpting, carving and hand-paints will be covered, as well as mold-making for pressing tile. WEDNESDAY PM WHEEL Tuesdays, 6:00PM 9:00PM Ryan Lack Session 1: January 11 March 1 Beginning techniques such as centering, compressing and shaping, as well as more advanced techniques such as attaching multiple parts to one object, throwing lids, and surface decoration will be covered. WEDNESDAY PM WHEEL Wednesdays, 6:00PM 9:00PM Nicole Morocco Session 2: March 8 April 26 Taught by a Pewabic Vessel Maker, this class will cover beginning techniques such as centering, compressing and shaping. More advanced techniques such as attaching multiple parts to one object, throwing lids, and surface decoration will also be covered. THURSDAY AM WHEEL: HISTORICAL POTTERY Thursdays, 10:00AM 1:00PM Henry Crissman Session 1: January 12 March 2 Humans have been using clay to make vessels for the last 10,000+ years. In looking back at some of the ingenious techniques that have been used and forms that have been produced, we can develop more varied and informed ways to use the medium in our current moment. Looking primarily at the earliest traditions of high-fired pottery making in Japan, Korea, and China, this class will explore the potters wheel along with hand forming techniques in efforts to make stunning new pots inspired by historical ones.

6 Education Catalogue THURSDAY AM WHEEL: BUILDING FROM MULTIPLE PARTS Thursdays, 10:00AM 1:00PM Henry Crissman Session 2: March 9 April 27 In this class students will explore the wheel as a tool to make parts which may be assembled to make pots of previously unachievable shapes and sizes. Beginning with classical approaches toward making assembled forms such as teapots and large multipart vessels, students will develop and aptitude for deconstructing and assembling compound forms. SLIPCASTING Fridays, 10:00AM-1:00PM Lauren McCoy Session 1: January 13 March 3 Session 2: March 10 April 28 Through demonstration and discussion, students will learn the basics of slipcasting and mold making. This class will focus on one- and two-part re-usable plaster molds, attachments, and surface, including the use of color in clay slip. Students will examine both sculptural and functional forms. Slip will be included with purchase of class (in place of 25 lbs of clay). 4-6 WEEK CLASSES Our six week and four week class offerings are geared toward beginner students that have never touched clay before. These classes are designed to survey your abilities and figure out which 8-week class would best suite your interests. These classes do not include open studio time but it can be purchased for an additional $ Clay, glazes and firings are included with enrollment. BEGINNER WHEEL THROWING, $ Weeks Duration Steven Johnson Saturdays, 10:00AM-1:00PM Session 1: January 14 February 18 This beginning wheel-throwing class is designed for adults that would like to experience throwing on the potter s wheel. During this beginners only class, students will learn to wedge, center, pull-up and form on the wheel. The last two weeks of class will focus on glazing and firing techniques. Tools will be provided. Please note: Open studio privileges (working outside of class time in the studio) are only available when the Open add on is purchased.

During this beginners only class, students will learn to wedge, center, pull-up and form on the wheel. The last two weeks of class will focus on glazing and firing techniques. Tools will be provided. Please note: Open studio privileges (working outside of class time in the studio) are only available when the Open add on is purchased. CONTINUING EDUCATION : COLLEGE FOR CREATIVE STUDIES Ceramic Survey (CCS Continuing Education Class) Monday Evenings: 6PM 9PM Session 1: January 23 February 27 Teacher: Zack Raska During this (8) week class session, students will be introduced to the various ways of working in clay. Participants will be introduced to hand-building, creating tiles, using basic one-piece molds, and wheel-throwing techniques. Firing, glazing, and various firing techniques will also be explored. Firing atmospheres include Salt, Soda, Gas Reduction, and Radiant (Electric) heat kilns. Please note: The College for Creative Studies handles Enrollment for this class for Creative Studies Continuing Education Department. To register call: WORKSHOPS AND SPECIAL EVENTS Workshop fee includes clay and one bisque firing, unless otherwise noted. Registration is required for all workshops unless otherwise noted. You will be surprised with what you can make with no clay experience. Make it your own private party and bring your own food and beverages. Age Range: 18+ years old. Participants make two objects each, a vase and/or luminary and a tile. B.O.Y.B. All tools are supplied. FRIDAY NIGHT OUT ALTERNATIVE: WHEEL THROWING $45.00 Per Person 6:00 8:00PM January 27 th February 24 th March 24 th April 21 st Looking for a stimulating Friday night adventure? Begin your weekend in our studio with your friends and /or family creating objects on the pottery wheel. Make it your own private party and bring your own food and beverages. Age Range: 18+ years old. Please note: This is an experience-based event; participants will not keep thrown objects. B.O.Y.B. All tools are supplied. YOUTH & FAMILY WHEEL WORKSHOPS Try your hand at the pottery wheel in this family friendly workshop, held one Saturday per term from 10 AM-12 PM. Wheel workshops are $20 per person, or $35 with parent and child. Age Range: 6-12 years old unless accompanied by parent. Please note: This is an experienced-based workshop only, no work will be kept/fired. Saturday, February 25 Saturday, April 29 --Pewabic Education is under no obligation to reschedule classes that are cancelled upon the closure of the facility due to inclement weather. There is no guarantee that a make-up class will be offered. Classes will not be pro-rated to accommodate a missed class, nor will refunds be issued. In rare circumstances, credits may be given towards classes per the Education staff. Please contact the Manager of Education for more information.
