2 LEARNING Through The ARTS Crack Pot Studio brings art programs to your school classroom All materials and equipment are brought to your school. This eliminates the high cost of transportation. Professional artists have designed workshops to enhance, link and adapt content to the curriculum from junior kindergarten to high school. Explore projects ranging from animals, Ancient Civilizations, Medieval times, to structural stability. Programs allow students to develop critical thinking skills and gain confidence in applying their ideas, and reinforce the elements and principles of design. These programs are so successful because they are fun! Booking with Crack Pot Studio We require a minimum of 18 students per workshop. All materials, instructor, and taxes are included. Payment is made to Crack Pot Studio and collected by the instructor on the day of the workshop. Schools outside of Oakville are assessed a travel fee. We require a minimum of 48 hours for cancellations and changes. Please assist our instructors by providing a transport trolley, bucket of water for washing hands and paper towels. Crack Pot does not provide smocks for students. Clay pieces require up to fourteen days of drying time in our studio and an additional day for each firing. Painted bisque pieces require five to seven days to dry, glaze and fire. s t u d i o Teachers arrange to pick up wrapped and boxed finished pieces from Crack Pot Studio and distribute them to classes. 3 CLAY WORKSHOPS Hand build with clay. Students explore form and shape while building three dimensional sculptures and vessels. Instructors discuss methods of working with clay such as pinch pots, coil pots, or slab techniques and insure students produce kiln safe pieces of art. The finished pieces are taken to the studio where they are dried and bisque fired. This program is easily adapted to all class levels. Teachers are requested to provide a pail for water, paper towels and a trolley to help transport clay. 1.5 hr. program / bisque fire $ % HST of $ 1.50 Total $12.50 per student ANIMALS Build an animal using pinch pot construction. Explore what makes each animal different and what parts animals have in common. ANIMALS and THEIR HABITATS STRUCTURE Students create an animal and its environment/habitat. Elements of environment, food source and landscape are discussed. Scale, texture and detail are focused on in this workshop ANIMAL LEGENDS - CREATURES and DRAGONS Animals, real and make believe, occur throughout mythology and story lore. We hear of Greek Minotaurs and Centaurs, Roman Lions and the Dancing Bears of the Inuit. Students will create their own interpretation of these wild and wonderful characters using pinch pot construction. MASKS Masks have been used as disguises, adornments, tellers of stories and history and artistic expression. They can engage, amuse, frighten or cajole. Students build an original mask from clay, exploring the power of shape, form and texture in communicating. TOTEM POLES Totem poles are a symbol of First Nations groups in Canada, and communicate their rich heritage and symbolism. Poles are created using slab construction, with an emphasis on structural stability and texture. MEDIEVAL TIMES - GARGOYLES These fantastic creatures stand guard on Medieval architecture. Students build an original creature using the pinch pot method. MEDIEVAL TIMES - FAMILY CREST and SHIELDS Design your own coat of arms, a symbolic and artistic representation of family and self. MEDIEVAL TIMES - GOBLETS and CHALICES A footed cup is a symbol of family and tradition. Build a goblet or chalice for a medieval feast.

4 EGYPTIAN CANOPIC JARS When creating a mummy, Ancient Egyptians preserved internal organs in Canopic jars. Using clay, we will recreate the impressive forms of the jackal, baboon, falcon, and human. This project explores pinch pot construction as well as sculptural elements. EGYPTIAN CARTOUCHES Hieroglyphs are enclosed in an oblong shape. Students build their names or message in a royal symbol created using slab construction. These can be hung on a wall. EGYPTIAN SPHINXES The sphinx, a recumbent lion with human head, is a well recognized symbol of ancient Egypt. Each student builds their own temple guardian. GREEK AMPHORAS This vessel used to store oil, grain, or wine was a staple of the Ancient Greeks. Students will build this two-handled vessel and etch the surface with Greek imagery. ROMAN RELIEF PLAQUES Every sculpture tells a story. The Romans commemorated events through descriptive relief sculpture. Build a three dimensional tale in the style of the Ancient Romans using slab construction. ROMAN BUSTS Students will sculpt a bust of their favorite Roman emperor. Basic techniques will be taught focusing on developing form and expression. AZTEC VESSELS Aztec pottery was elaborately decorated for the wealthy and for rituals. Create a pot in the Aztec style and etch with symbols. MAYAN JAGUAR MASK Mayan Rulers used the jaguar as a symbol for the divine right of kings. The flared nostrils, scrolled eyebrows, and pointed teeth are t y p i c a l features of t h i s deity. URBAN LANDSCAPE Build a city block, be an urban planner, or build a model of your Urban environment. Explores the concept of scale and structural stability HOLIDAY THEMES - Hallowe en, Christmas, Valentine s Day, Easter, Mother s Day, Father s Day, Multicultural holidays Create a Theme related project from clay. Pumpkin candle holders for Hallowe en, snowmen or angels for Christmas, or a Valentine vase from the heart. Create a great gift for Mother s or Father s Day.

5 CERAMICS PAINTING In the following workshops, students paint a bisque-fired piece with under glaze paints. The pieces are then transported to Crack Pot Studio where they are clear glazed and fired. Finished work is water proof and fully usable. Fired work is picked up at the studio by the school in ten days. 1.5 hr. program / includes bisque piece / color under glaze / clear glaze / firing $ % HST of $ 1.80 Total $15.50 per student ANCIENT GREEK POTTERY Urns are painted in classic Greek patterns and designs. ANCIENT EGYPTIAN POTTERY Mysterious symbols carved on the wall of tombs and temples are a fascinating source for design and creativity. Using the hieroglyphic alphabet, students design and paint a Egyptian vessel. MAYAN POTTERY Mayan ceramic artists were highly educated members of the elite. They decorated their pottery with images of rituals, myths, geometric symbols and hieroglyphics. Students paint a vessel in the Mayan style. HOLIDAY THEMES Hallowe en, Christmas, Valentine s Day, Easter, Mother s Day, Father s Day, Multicultural Holidays Choose from our large selection of functional items such as mugs, bowls, plates, picture frames, vases and trinket boxes. Students will decorate with under glaze paints. 6 MAKE LEARNING THROUGH THE ARTS A SCHOOL EVENT Consider extending your arts program to the entire student body. Incorporate it into your literary or social sciences program. Showcase student projects during Education or Arts week Each student produces an art piece with the theme chosen by individual classroom teachers. The art is then used as a tool to present and discuss. For Example: A story is written to match, explore or describe the experience Poem written to describe the piece or experience Dance and movement Personal history/ journal recording Reporting of events - news articles Dramatic presentation Public Speaking School anniversary Video Story Video-tape the presentations and incorporate into an Art Gallery, Science Fair or School event to showcase student achievement. Build a ceramic tile wall for your school It s a wonderful way to build school and community spirit. Participants pay to paint a family tile and the proceeds go to your school. Students, staff, and their families will return for years and even decades to view their own personal tile and their friends tiles.
