Basic ceramic tool kit (available at Pewabic Gallery Store) and one gallon bucket (found at any hardware store) for throwing is required for each class. HAND-BUILDING: SURFACE APPLICATION* Tuesdays, 10:00AM 1:00 PM Lindsey Dezman Session 1: May 2 June 20 Session 2: July 11-August 22 *No Class on Independence Day/ Prorated (Session 2) This course will develop a strong skill base to enable successful construction of functional and sculptural ceramic objects. Students will learn to use the hand-building processes of pinch, slab, coil and hollowing. Students will also utilize the surface techniques of Mishima, sgraffito, stenciling, wax resist, inlay, decals, use of the spray booth and glazing. TUESDAY PM WHEEL* Tuesdays, 6:00PM 9:00PM Chris Mayse Session 1: May 2 June 20 Session 2: July 11 August 22 *No Class on Independence Day/Prorated (Term 2) Beginning techniques such as centering, compressing and shaping, as well as more advanced techniques such as attaching multiple parts to one object, throwing lids, and surface decoration will be covered. Glaze techniques will also be explored.

Sculpting, carving and hand-paints will be covered, as well as mold-making for pressing tile. WEDNESDAY PM WHEEL: THROWING UNUSAL FORMS Wednesdays, 6:00PM 9:00PM Melinda Mercer Session 1: May 3 June 21 Session 2: July 3 August 23 In this class students will explore a wide range of interesting pottery forms. In addition to the fundamentals of wheel throwing, a variety of unusual shapes will be demonstrated including ring bottles, double-walled bowls and enclosed pieces. Surface decoration and glazing techniques will also be covered to further enhance the uniqueness of projects. Individual instruction and guidance will be provided to help refine skill and craftsmanship. 5 Education Catalogue TILE MAKING Fridays, 10:00AM-1:00PM Dave McGee Session 1: May 5 June 23 Session 2: July 7 August 25 Taught by a Pewabic Designer, this class will cover the way Pewabic s Fabrication department traditionally designs, fabricates and glazes tiles. Sculpting, carving and hand-paints will be covered, as well as mold-making for pressing tile. 4-6 WEEK CLASSES Our six week and four week class offerings are geared toward beginner students that have never touched clay before. These classes are designed to survey your abilities and figure out which 8-week class would best suite your interests. These classes do not include open studio time but it can be purchased for an additional $ Clay, glazes and firings are included with enrollment. BEGINNER WHEEL THROWING, $ Weeks Duration Courtney Hoelscher Saturdays, 10:00AM-1:00PM Session 1: May 6 June 10 Session 2: July 8 August 12 This beginning wheel-throwing class is designed for adults that would like to experience throwing on the potter s wheel. During this beginners only class, students will learn to wedge, center, pull-up and form on the wheel. The last two weeks of class will focus on glazing and firing techniques. Tools will be provided. Please note: Open studio privileges (working outside of class time in the studio) are only available when the Open add on is purchased.
6 Education Catalogue CONTINUING EDUCATION: COLLEGE FOR CREATIVE STUDIES CERAMIC SURVEY (CCS Continuing Education Class) Monday, 6:00PM 9:00PM TBD Session 1: May 1- June 19 Session 2: July 3 August 21 *No Class Memorial Day/Prorated (Session 1) During this (8) week class session, students will be introduced to the various ways of working in clay. Participants will be introduced to hand-building, creating tiles, using basic one-piece molds, and wheel-throwing techniques. Firing, glazing, and various firing techniques will also be explored. Firing atmospheres include: Soda, Gas Reduction, and Radiant (Electric) heat kilns. Please note: The College for Creative Studies handles Enrollment for this class for Creative Studies Continuing Education Department. To register call: WORKSHOPS AND SPECIAL EVENTS Workshop fee includes clay and one bisque firing, unless otherwise noted. Registration is required for all workshops unless otherwise noted. FRIDAY NIGHT OUT ALTERNATIVE: HANDBUILDING $45.00 per person 6:00PM 9:00PM May 12, June 16, July 14, August 11 Looking for a stimulating Friday night adventure? Begin your weekend in our studio with your friends and /or family creating objects with soft clay slabs. You will be surprised with what you can make with no clay experience. Make it your own private party and bring your own food and beverages. Age Range: 18+ years old. Participants make two objects each, a vase and/or luminary and a tile. B.Y.O.B. All tools are supplied. FRIDAY NIGHT OUT ALTERNATIVE: WHEEL THROWING $35.00 per person 6:00PM 8:00PM May 26, June 30, July 28, August 25 Looking for a stimulating Friday night adventure? 7 Education Catalogue Didem Mert Workshop $100 per person 9:00AM-5:00PM June 24 Didem will demo handbuilt functional pottery using soft slab, coil and pinching techniques in addition to working with bisque molds. Didem will also demonstrate use of terra sigilatas, slip and underglazes. The demo will include a minute slide presentation. Didem will be showing how she makes mugs, bowls, plates and flasks. Troy Bungart Brush Making Workshop $100 per person 10:00AM-5:00PM August 5 Come and join Troy as he takes you step by step through the process of making handmade bamboo paintbrushes. You will discover how with raw materials, your creativity and attention to details can create a brush that will be a unique extension of your efforts and something you can be proud of. During this intensive one-day workshop, Troy will ground you in the basics of brush construction, covering heads, ferrules and bamboo handles. Handle with Care Workshop $900 per person Student: $750 September The Handle with Care workshop will focus on combining the elements of line, volume, form and texture to create dynamic functional wheel thrown pottery. Participants in this workshop will learn a variety of different forming methods such as altering wheel thrown objects, pulling handles, incorporating attachments and optimizing the functionality of an object from 3 unique perspectives. Questions on aesthetics will be addressed (proportions, balance, line, integration, etc.) during the demonstration and how to resolve these complications. Matt, Eric, and Todd will share their combined experiences on a myriad of topics: transitioning from academia to the real world, developing a personal body of work, graduate school, residencies, apprenticeships, wholesale, retail, craft shows, approaching galleries, choosing the appropriate clay body and glazes, how to effectively set up your studio, packing and shipping, marketing through social media. These demonstrations and discussions will help to motivate the participants and get them excited to be back in the studio. Learn to handle your pots, as well as every aspect of your life in clay, with the appropriate care it deserves. Participants should bring bisque cups (rated to cone 10) to be fired in the Pewabic soda kiln. The workshop will kick off with a soda firing. While the kiln cools participants will work hands
8 Education Catalogue on with instructors on throwing, altering, decorating, trimming, and a variety of handle techniques. The workshop will conclude with the unloading of the soda kiln. Saturday September 16: arrive, meet n greet, begin kiln prep and loading the kiln Sunday September 17: fire soda kiln and demos Monday September 18: fire soda kiln, studio session 1 Tuesday September 19: studio session 2 Wednesday September 20: clean up, kiln unloading, farewells Matt Schiemann is a second generation potter and manager at the Morean Center for Clay in St. Petersburg Florida. Known for his strong forms and dramatic woodfired surfaces, Schiemann shows his work internationally. Matt is an adjunct professor at St. Petersburg College and a frequent contributor to Ceramics Monthly and PMI. Eric Botbyl is a full time studio potter, living and working in Humboldt, TN. Known for his highly textured surfaces and bulbous forms, Eric received the Best Thrown and Altered award at the Strictly Functional Pottery National in Eric and his wife, Jill, own and operate Companion Gallery, a retail gallery featuring over a thirty nationally recognized ceramic artists. Todd Pletcher is an American studio potter from Goshen, Indiana, currently living and working in Australia. Known for his wavy rims and curvaceous forms, Pletcher is the current AIR at TAFE in Sydney. Todd was 2016 emerging artist for Ceramics Monthly and shows his work internationally. YOUTH & FAMILY WHEEL WORKSHOPS Try your hand at the pottery wheel in this family friendly workshop, held one Saturday per term from 10 AM-12 PM. Wheel workshops are $20 per person, or $35 with parent and child. Age Range: 6-12 years old unless accompanied by parent. Please note: This is an experienced-based workshop only, no work will be kept/fired. Saturday, June 17 Saturday, August 19 --Pewabic Education is under no obligation to reschedule classes that are cancelled upon the closure of the facility due to inclement weather. There is no guarantee that a make-up class will be offered. Classes will not be pro-rated to accommodate a missed class, nor will refunds be issued. In rare circumstances, credits may be given towards classes per the Education staff. Please contact the Manager of Education for more information. Please note: No cash refunds are issued once classes have begun.
