1 1 of 7 6/22/2011 3:59 PM The Professional Institute for Educators ED*6020AC*01 Larry Donahue, ldonahue@uarts.edu Course Description Create large and small-scale ceramic mosaic constructions through the use of line drawings, freehand sketches, slide transfers or with computer assistance. Learn techniques such as plaster mold castings for tile replication opportunities, the use of plastic patterns or one-of-a-kind fabrications. Mounting and hanging are covered as well. Content open to all teachers with an interest in producing tiles; application to classroom use is considered. Course Objective Design and construct multiple carvings for casting into plaster or silicone molds. From this a production of castings can be assembled either in Porcelain, Stoneware or Plaster/ Cement. This sets up the student for opportunities in glazing, or using stains and paints. Using materials for clay; colored slips, underglazes and oxides, glazes, one can experiment with finishes on their tiles / mosaics that suite your tastes and personal pallet. The same ideas can be used on the plaster/cement castings; paints, stains and patinas can be used to finish your works. Experimenting on the many surfaces with different results, leads into discoveries never thought possible with your tiles and mosaics. Opening new doors for carvings and productions, you would hardly ever dream about. Making lots & lots of castings form each mold or molds, frees one up in the completion process. Allowing you to take risks with the glazes and patinas. As one works through the process during the class, it frees you up for new designs and outcomes that weren t even in your head before you started. The making process, is very mysterious in it s effect, taking you down paths not open before. The class is for one to work out old and new ideas for your personal and professional experience. It s been proven in past classes, the more you PLAY, the better your results. Leading back to the classroom for refreshing takes on the same materials.

7 7 of 7 6/22/2011 3:59 PM All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly, and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness of absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Nonattendance does not constitute an official withdrawal. Educators taking courses for credit are required to complete assignments for evaluation outside of direct contact hours. These assignments may include lesson plans, readings, papers, projects, presentations or other work relating the course content to classroom application. Most final course projects will be due two weeks after the final class meeting. An official grade report will be provided automatically 10 to 15 business days after projects are submitted. Courses for credit qualify for PA Act 48 standards; non-credit coursework does not qualify. A three credit class will be posted as Act hour equivalency. Students must supply their unique PA Act 48 Professional Personal ID number and complete the request form, distributed in class, to have their credit course posted. Act 48 posting to the PA Department of Education occurs at the end of each month, after final grading for coursework is complete. The University of the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment, reschedule any course or to change the instructor. If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified prior to the start of classes and will have the option of taking another course or receiving a full refund. The University is not responsible for supplies that may be purchased in advance.
