1 Unit: Handbuilding Techniques Lesson: Coil Grade Level: High School 1 Introduction: Clay has been used for many things throughout human history: a writing surface building material money (e.g., In the Near East, the Babylonians issued hollow balls of clay with little stones inside. Clay vessels filled with spices, olive oil, and wine were shipped and traded throughout the Middle East, Europe and Asia.) chamber pots ceramic shields or tiles on space ships, in engine parts, electronic device parts and in communications a major tool for dating cultures in archeology studies In this lesson, we will construct cylindrical vessels using coil handbuilding technique with the assistance of a form such as a container. The finished products are flower vases. The finished pieces must have exterior decorations or textural designs. You can use the tools we have in our studio or your own personal tools from home to create the designs. Exterior decorations will give life to your finished art piece, because they add interests, value and meanings to your work. To be successful, you must treat the surface of clay as a drawing surface. Pay close attentions to your clay and follow all proper procedures to prevent problems. It should take atleast 7 days to create the vases: 3-4 days to create the vessel and 2-3 days to decorate or design the piece. The finished vases will take 3-5 days to dry, 2 days to get it bisque, 1-2 day/s to get it glaze, and 2 days to get it glazed fire. As you can see, this is a long process so stay on schedule and follow all proper procedures closely to prevent unnecessary problems and headaches. As always, ceramics can be messy so wear proper clothing for this lesson.

2 2 Rationale for Teaching Lesson: Students will become familiar with basic coil handbuilding technique. Students will construct 4 wide by 10 tall by ¼ thick vases. Essential Understanding: Lesson Objectives 1. Learn how to use clay as a medium for expression in art through exterior decorations 2. Learn some basic handbuilding techniques : coil 3. Become familiar with the procedures and processes of working with clay 4. Use coil method to create a vessel that is around 4 wide X 10 tall X ¼ thick 1. Ceramics are clay objects fired to a high temperature 2. Artists use clay in many ways to create art as well as functional pottery 3. Form and function must work together as a unit 4. Exterior decorations add value and interests to a finished piece 5. Clay can be form to create useful objects in everyday life 6. Clay follows specific guidelines to achieve quality finished products Materials and Tools Earthenware clay, 4 X7 shape or container, canvases, rulers, wedging wires, wooden strips, clay knives, metal ribs, wooden ribs, sponges, water buckets, slip, plastic bags, glazes, etc. Vocabulary Clay, ceramics, earthenware, slab, coil, leather hard, mold, wedging wire, rolling pin, fettling knife, metal rib, wooden rib, wooden modeling tool, slip, synthetic sponge, kiln, bisque, greenware, firing, glaze, vitrify, etc. Wisconsin Learning Standards:The links below will How the Standards are addressed in this lesson:

I.12.7: Actively engage in the process through experimentations and investigations using the tools and materials creatively to produce a quality piece of artwork. Lesson Time Line Phase 1 (Day 1) 1. Discuss lesson plan, process, clay techniques, and show examples with the class using LCD projector. Phase 2 (Day 2) 1. Demonstration on coil technique 2. Explain proper procedures and processes for working with clay 3. Go over some basic ceramic terms 4. Create a 4 X10 flower vases using coil and slab techniques Phase 3 (Day 4-7) 5. Student construct and decorate the vessels Phase 4 (Day 7-Project due at end of class) 6. Students let finished pieces dry (This process will take atleast 3-5 days for the clay to dry thoroughly) Phase 5 (Day 12) 7. Bisque finished pieces Phase 6 (Day 14) 8. Discuss glazing techniques, procedures and safety 9. Show students glazing technique and process 10. Students glaze their bisquewares Phase 7 (Day 10)

Students finish glazing their pencil holders Guided Instructions Students will use the whole allocated class period to work on the assigned project until the project is finished or the designated due date. All activities during Art class must be relevant to the assigned art project only. Not doing anything educational during the allocated time for art is not acceptable. No daily class participation points will be awarded when student is not working on the assigned project. Students may read a book or do other homework quietly if the project is done to the highest level possible, an A quality. This is usually true for very gifted and talented students who are extremely motivated and work incredibly hard. ART IS AN INTELLECTUAL AND PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS THAT REQUIRED STUDENTS TO INVESTIGATE AND FULLY EXPERIMENT WITH THE MEDIUM TO LEARN PROBLEM SOVLING SKILLS AND INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES TO ACHIEVE FAVORABLE SOLUTIONS. Modification/s Students may take the project with them to work on, but the project must be brought back to class the next day so students can continue with the learning process in class. All images are at different level of difficulties. Students with IEP and known learning disabilities may use less challenging images for their projects. Projects may be extended beyond the due date if need be without penalty according to their IEP s. Students with EXCUSED ABSENCES during the project will receive extra and outside of class time only to complete the project without penalty. Students can get extra guidance and help with the project from teacher between 2:45-3:30 on most days if the teacher is available. Pottery Tutorial Coil Construction This is another technique using coils to construct a piece of pottery. This technique involve both making coils and pressing them into a pattern. (Roll coils) Roll coils in a circular fashion.

5 (Make a pattern) 5 Line up coils rolls as seen here. Then place a couple coils on top above and below the coil rolls. (Fill in gaps) (Scrape and Smooth) Press a ball of clay in each gap that you can see through. pattern will still be visible. Scrape all the coils together. Don't worry about the other side, your coil (Straighten edges) After the coils have been scraped and smoothed, you might want to

6 6 straighten the edges by tapping a yard stick against the edge. Your piece is now like a slab, however, your coil pattern will still be visible on the other side. (Lift carefully) (Make a bottom) Carefully lift your coil slab. (Bend and attach to the bottom) Cut out a shape for your bottom. I used a cup as a guide for my bottom. around the bottom you cut out. Carefully bend the coil slab

7 (Smooth the bottom) 7 Flip over your piece then scrape and smooth the bottom. A finger that has been dipped in water works great for smoothing. (Finishing touches) the coil pattern back onto the piece. On the area where the coil slab was put together use a pencil and draw (Finishing touches - Smooth the top edge) Smooth out the top and you piece is ready to dry slowly. It is important to dry the piece slowly because the grooves from the coils will crack if drying occurs too quickly.
