2 BUTLER NORTH - Youngstown: Butler North (formerly known as the First Christian Church) houses the Dennison Education Center, the new home of the Butler s education department. Butler North is located next to the Butler Institute on the corner of Wick Avenue and University Plaza. Thanks to the generosity of the Dennison family, this beautiful facility is the site for Butler classes, lectures, concerts and private events. INCREASE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ART HISTORY Join Butler docents in the Zona auditorium for a Continuing Education program that focuses upon art history. Lectures as well as video from the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. will cover American and European painting, as well as a variety of other art forms. This series is held on Tuesdays at noon. Contact Richard Adler 330/ , ext. 117 for program information. PLEASE NOTE Class size is limited. Classes are filled on a first come first served basis. Sessions that do not fill will be cancelled or combined. No written confirmation will be mailed. If you do not hear from us, your enrollment is ensured. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships based on need are available on a limited basis for children s classes at our Youngstown and Trumbull Butler locations. Please direct written requests to the Butler Education Department in Youngstown and include a recommendation from the student s art teacher. PARKING In Youngstown, limited free parking is available in the Butler s private lot located on the museum s north side. Additional parking is available at a nominal cost in nearby YSU lots. In Howland, ample free parking is provided on the Butler Trumbull museum s property. Students will learn how to plot out their own storyline and create interesting characters in comic book form like the pros! This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. POSTER MAKING WORKSHOP Get ready for poster contests, science fairs, and other school/church events promoting your ideas by learning a few pointers about how the best posters can catch our attention. Wednesday-September 28 Room A Fee: $15 #010-Grades 4-8 4:30-6:00 p.m. PAINT, PAPER, COLLAGE, AND MORE (Homeschool) Cut, tear, paint, and glue! Enjoy the many creative uses of paper in this fun class. Students will use Eric Carle and other book illustrators for inspiration in creating their own two-dimensional works. Wednesdays-4 weeks-october 12, 19, 26, November 2 #011-Grades :00-11:00 a.m. -OR- Thursdays-4 weeks-october 13, 20, 27, November 3 #012 Grades :30-1:30 p.m. SCULPTO-PICTORAMAS Learn about the art of American artist, Red Grooms. Students will be creating 3-D environmental constructions called sculpto-pictoramas based on works by Red Grooms. Various media such as papier-mache, plaster infused gauze, found objects, cardboard, tape, paint, etc. will all be used in these creations. Saturdays-October 22, November 5, 12, 19 #013-Grades :00-11:00 a.m. #014-Grades :30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. #015-Grades 5-8 2:00-3:00 p.m. FALL FEST Come and explore the wonderful changing colors of fall with your little one. We will create fall-themed projects to celebrate the new season. Saturday-October 22 Fee: $10 #016-Preschool/K (ages 3-6) with adult partner 10:00-11:00 a.m. ART IN 3-D Use your imagination and create art in 3-D! Relief sculptures and in-the-round sculptures will be created with a variety of materials in this hands-on class. Saturday-November 19 Fee: $10 #017-Preschool/K (ages 3-6) with adult partner 10:00-11:00 a.m. LITTLE ELVES In this non-denominational workshop, our elves will be busy creating several handmade gifts to share with loved ones. Saturday-December 10 Fee: $10 #018-Preschool/K (ages 3-6) with adult partner 10:00-11:00 a.m. SNOW DAY Don t let the cold days of winter keep you at home! Come and beat cabin fever with a winter workshop with your little one. We will be creating a variety of projects celebrating the snow and ice. CLAY TIME CAPSULES (Homeschool) Learn or improve your craftsmanship in the art of hand-building with clay while creating a personal time capsule. Pinch, coil, and slab techniques will be utilized. Students will choose a combination of techniques to build a time capsule to hold special personal notes and mementos that can be set aside for years to come and opened at a future date. Wednesdays-4 weeks-january 11, 18, 25, February 1 #020-Grades :00-11:00 a.m. -OR- Thursdays-4 weeks-january 12, 19, 26, February 2 #021-Grades :30-1:30 p.m. TEEN/ADULT CLASSES - YOUNGSTOWN-BUTLER NORTH BRINGING REALITY TO CANVAS (ALL LEVELS) This painting class will provide students of all skill levels time to work at their own pace while creating an oil painting from a photographic source. This class may be repeated. Students are asked to bring a 5 x 7 photo for use on an 11 x 14 pre-stretched canvas. (Ambitious students may try larger surfaces-i.e. 8 x 10 photo with a 16 x 20 canvas but must provide their own canvas.) Although reference photos that you have taken are preferred, it is a good idea to have several different photos with you at the start. In some cases you may like a different sky, or trees or just want to combine several to make an image more unique or personal. In many cases, choosing a photo with larger shapes and good contrast from light to dark may be easier to translate. All supplies for painting in oils will be provided. Students wishing to work in acrylics may bring their own paints and instruction will be provided as well. Supply fee is waived if students have their own supplies. Previous students can use time in class to complete any earlier oil paintings and begin a new work. Students will learn different techniques of recognizing shape and form to transition to their drawing as well as tools to help them learn basic drawing skills. Students should bring a reference of their favorite subject to draw. (Please call , ext. 221 for supply list.) Mondays-5 weeks-september 12, 19, 26, October 3, 10 #A04-Ages 14 & up 6:00-8:00 p.m. COLORED PENCIL DRAWING This class will provide students a variety of techniques needed in using colored pencils to draw and color subjects of their choice. Explore light sources, shading, and blending to produce finished artworks. This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. (Please call , ext. 221 for supply list.) COLORED PENCIL AND WATERCOLOR COMBINED Explore the world of mixed media art combining basic skills of watercolor painting enhanced with the detail of colored pencils. Students will learn lighting, shading, layering and perspective to produce beautiful full color works of their favorite subject matter. Please bring several different full color reference pictures (5 x 7 ). This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. (Please call , ext. 221 for supply list.) Wednesdays-5 weeks-september 14, 21, 28, October 5, 12 #A07-Ages 14 & up 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesdays-5 weeks-october 19, 26, November 2, 9, 16 #A08-Ages 14 & up 6:00-8:00 p.m. MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS Explore the world of New York Modern mixed media with acrylic paint on stretched canvas utilizing acrylics as a base layer with spray paint on top to create vibrant expressionist images. Students will learn basic painting skills and use of stenciling to create their artwork. (Please call , ext. 221 for supply list.) Mondays-5 weeks-october 17, 24, November 7, 14, 21 (no class Oct. 31) #A09-Ages 14 & up 6:00-8:00 p.m. HOLIDAY GREETING CARD DESIGN Create your own set of beautiful handmade cards in any media of your choosing. Students will choose their own theme and subject matter to complete a set of holiday cards that will be unique in their own style of art. Pick a theme, bring a reference, and we will get started! Tuesdays-5 weeks-october 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15 #A10-Ages 14 & up 6:00-8:00 p.m. STUDIO OIL/ACRYLIC PAINTING (All Levels) Learn or continue learning to paint at your own pace and level. Bring along a few references to paint, making sure they are clear so detail can be seen. Instructor will be available for suggestions and assistance. For beginners, please make sure references are not complicated. Students may bring their own supplies or purchase paint (oils only) and supplies from instructor. (All students should bring an 11 x 14 stretched canvas.) This painting class will teach you the basics of tube watercolors where you will learn color mixing and water usage along with shading, depth and gradation of color values. Students should bring several 8 x 10 photos or pictures for reference of their favorite subject matter to paint. (Please call , ext. 221 for supply list.) Mondays-5 weeks-january 9, 16, 23, 30, February 6 #A12-Ages 14 & up 6:00-8:00 p.m. TEEN/ADULT CLASSES - YOUNGSTOWN-BUTLER NORTH (cont.) PEN AND INK Students will learn to finish their pencil drawing and sketches in pen and ink using various techniques and materials. Explore light source, shading, and perspective of objects. Finished art will be ready for reproduction (greeting cards, notes, business cards, etc.) (Please call , ext. 221 for supply list.) DRAWING Students will explore a variety of materials used for drawing as well as learn about various techniques used to create realistic and imaginary artworks. Students will select one of two references with the focus on layout, color, perspective, and more to complete their painting. (All Students should bring one 11 x 14 stretched canvas to class.) Basic Drawing I is a prerequisite for this class. Students should bring a reference of their favorite subject to draw as well as supplies purchased for Basic Drawing I. Fridays-5 weeks-october 21, 28, November 4, 11, 18 #TA03-Ages 14 & up 1:00-3:00 p.m. Butler Members / Srs. receive a 15% discount on Teen/Adult Classes FREE PROGRAMS WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP (Beginner-Intermediate) Students will choose from a selection of three or four different subjects to paint. For more experienced painters, bring your paper with sketch finished and ready to go. Complete your painting in one day, focusing on problem solving color, texture, and different watercolor techniques. Bring your own supplies or purchase materials (except paper) from instructor for $6. Bring your own watercolor paper (Canson, Strathmore Arches 140 lb.) Listen to a story in Sweeney Children's Gallery, and visit a museum exhibit. Then return to Sweeney to create a work of art based on your museum experience. This program appeals to pre-school through primary grade children and is a great opportunity for families to spend quality time together as they learn about art. Call , Ext. 115 for more information. October 16, 2016 November 20, 2016 January 15, 2017 February 19, 2017 March 19, 2017 April 9, 2017 (dates are tentative) FREE FAMILY DAYS at the Butler Trumbull Branch, Saturdays at 2:00 pm Sandy Trolio, Butler art instructor, and the children's librarian from the Howland Branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Library join for an afternoon of art and literature. A children's librarian reads a story from the library collection and a Butler art instructor directs an art activity. Registration is not required. The program is free and geared for children 10 years of age and younger accompanied by an adult. Call , Ext. 115 for more information.
