3 BEARC Instrutions Page 2, A 1) Leave the legs high When you rown, they'll drop And the width will shrink Here's a basi way to alulate your bow without rowning: I Measure the distane from A to B, from B to C, and from C to D and total these 3 2 Subtrat from this number 5" for a 6" radius Bendar 67/8" for an 8" radius Bendar 8 1/2" for a 1" radius Bendar " for a 12" radius Bendar 3 Cut a piee of tubing that long and mark the midpoint 4 Put the tubing in your Bendar and align the midpoint mark with the number on the sale thars the same as the B to C distane (the width) Clamp & bend a leg 5 Turn the tube around; align the width mark again, and bend the send leg 6 It's important that the l a leg bent is straight when ifs turned so that the 2 nd leg will me down in line with the l a Aurate guide boards (see page 1) will help Additional Tips: If you rown your bow, you must allow for the arh The rown (an upward urve in the B to C dimension) allows water to drain off the finished top Crowning reates 2 hanges: The B to C dimension (width) shrinks, and the legs drop To allow for the "shrink in width (B to, try adding 112" for every 15" of width Example for a bow that's 75" wide: 75/15 = 5 5 x 1/2= 2 1/ Y2= 77 % So in this ase measure, ut & bend the bow as if it were 77 IA" wide, beause when you rown the width will shrink toward the 75" you really need This is a guide not a hard rule If you want a higher rown, try adding IA" for eah 12" of width Crowning also drops the legs so leave them high! You an bend the legs down more, later if needed but you an't raise them one they are bent

4 BEARC Instrutions Page 3 The greatest problem when bending boat top frames is allowing for the rown When you rown (rolling in an upward urve for water drainage) the angle of the leg bend inreases (The legs drop) The overall width also dereases from the upward thrust of the rown, see figure I Experiened fabriators have learned, through sometimes expensive trial and error, how to get dose They've learned how to allow for the hanges aused by rowning, but even experiened "pros" oasionally misjudge the legdrop or widthshrink aused by the rown Our nsultant, Professor Mihael Shaevitz of Columbia University, has developed a trigonometri based formula to alulate these two tial variables This mplex formula, whih most of us uldn't easily use has been made more user friendly by Professor Shaevitz's appliation hart Here's how to bend a bow using the hart: Suppose you'd like to bend a bow that has a finished width after rowning of 72" with rown height of 8" a leg length of 4" and a leg angle of 9 1 Divide the rown height by the finished width 8+72 = Find the number on the top line of the hart losest to 111 It is 11 3 Under 11 note the angle hange 248 or rounded off about 25 4 You wil "underbend the legs by 25 Instead of a 9 bend, bend them 65 5 The last number under 11 (132) is the ratio of full width to finished width Multiply the finished width by the ratio to get the width before rowning 72 x 1329 = 7434 or about 743/8 You will bend your bow 74 3/8 wide to get the finished width of 72" after rolling in an 8" rown You're now ready to measure and ut the tubing 6 Add the 2 leg lengths to the 'before rowning width" % =154 3/8 7 Dedut for the rner radius of your bender For example, if you're using an 8" Bendar dedut 67/8" as a rner allowane 154 3/8" eh" = 147 1/2" Cut off 147 1/2" of tubing 8 Mark the midpoint and align the midpoint with 74 3/8" on the width sale 9 Clamp and bend your leg 65 Turn the halfbent bow around line up the midpoint on the sale again and bend the other leg to 65 1 Insert the rner of the bow in your Crownar Drop the enter roller 1/2 to 1 turn below level and rank through to the other rner Drop the enter again and ntinue to "rok bak and forth until you have the 8" rown The rown 'shrinks the width to 72" and 'drops the legs to 9 Figwe I 65 13end /, i : Legs drop j to GO i 8" high rown "N r 1 743ife eke," shrinks to 72"

6 BEARC Instrutions Page 5 Bendar Periodi Maintenane Remove the roller from the bend arm and apply a film of axle grease to the inside of the bushing Do not get grease as the plasti surfaes Spray siline on the nonmetalli part of the hole in the roller Coat the keg arm pivot with axle grease Put a drop of light al on the lamp pivots and shaft The polymer dies (nonmetalli pasts) will slowly deteriorate from pressure and UV rays If your Bend= is mounted outdoors, make a ver to shield it from the sun to prole* polymer life Lifespan depends on frequeny of use, type of metal bent, and exposure to the sun's UV rays The polymer mponents usually last many years and replaement parts are mailable, but we've se m deterioratia in only 2 years when mounted outside in fall sunlight in far southern loations without being vered when not in use
