21 For preventing dangerous flashovers among parts of external lightning protection systems and internal conductive parts (electrical installation, conduits, etc.), keeping the separation distance s is an important requirement to be considered when designing and realising a lightning protection system. Keeping the separation distance s is often a problem for both new and existing installations. With the innovative solution of HVI Conductor of the DEHNconductor System range, this requirement can be fulfilled. Function of HVI Conductor: Without additional protective measures, high impulse voltages cause flashovers on surfaces of insulating materials. This effect is known as a creeping flashover. If the so-called creepage discharge inception voltage is exceeded, a surface sparkover is initiated that can range over a distance of some metres without problem. DEHNconductor System For avoiding creepage discharges, the new HVI Conductor is supplied with a special external coating that allows to direct high lightning impulse voltages to a reference potential. For this purpose, the special external coating is connected with the equipotential bonding of the building (free of partial lightning currents) in the area of the sealing unit. This can be performed at e.g. metal, earthed roofmounted elements situated in the protection area of the lightning protection system, at earthed parts of the building construction which is free of lightning currents, or at the protective conductor of the low voltage system. No metal parts may be situated within separation distance s from the sensitive sealing unit area. Special cases are e.g. entrance areas, sheltering roofs of buildings with high frequency of visitors, like theatres, cinemas, malls, where bare/non-insulated downconductor systems and lightning protection earthing electrodes are installed close to them. For buildings especially exposed (to lightning), and which are freely accessible to the public, e.g. shelters, also measures against impermissibly high shock voltages can become necessary. Touch voltages are voltages affecting a human being between his standing surface on the ground (distance approx. 1 m from the down conductor system) when contacting the down conductor. The current flows via the hand to the body and to the feet (see Fig. 1). The hazardous area for persons being outside of a building is defined to earth level within a height of approx. 3 m and a distance of 3 m around the down conductor. ϕ foundation earthing electrode = earth surface potential According to DIN EN (VDE ) Subclause E , the area to be protected against touch voltages corresponds to the height of the finger tips of a person with outreached hand and additionally to separation distance s (see Fig. 2). Additionally, the step voltage in the surroundings of the building/down conductor has also to be taken into account. Ut s DEHNconductor System CUI Conductor Effective measures for protection against injuries to persons due to touch voltages are defined by standardisation as follows: The bare down conductor is coated with an insulating material with an impulse withstand voltage of 100 kv at 1.2/50 μs, e.g. at least 3 mm cross-linked polyethylene; Lockings and/or warning signs to reduce the probability of touching the down conductors. The CUI conductor has an inner conductor out of copper with a diameter of 8 mm and a high-voltageresistant insulation (see Fig. 3). Requirements on these conductors are the surge withstand capability of 100 kv (1.2/50 μs) and the avoiding of a creepage sparkover even in rain. The surge withstand capability of 100 kv (1.2/50 μs) is achieved by an insulation out of special cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). Without additional measures, high impulse voltages cause sparkovers at insulating surfaces. This effect is known as a creeping discharge. If the creeping discharge inception voltage is exceeded, a surface discharge is initiated, which can cover a distance of several metres to earthed parts without problem. In order to avoid the upcoming of creeping discharges even in rain, the CUI conductor is supplied with an additional shield to form a dry area. This shield on the conductor and the drops after the rain test are shown in Fig. 4. The development of the CUI conductor was based on the rain test according to DIN IEC 60 Part 1 (VDE 0432 Part 1) Subclause 9. During this test, a defined volume of water is sprayed onto the conductor in an angle of approx. 45. This test is shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The CUI conductor is available in two standard lengths of 3.5 m and 5 m and is installed vertically at the wall with the corresponding conductor holders. The manufacturer has premounted a head piece and the shield. The conductor can be shortened on site but not be extended. For connecting to the down conductor, e.g. disconnecting or MV clamps can be used. 38 Isolated Air-termination Systems for Omnidirectional Antennas When installing isolated air-termination systems for omnidirectional antennas, it has to be ensured that an isolated air-termination rod covers the antenna to be protected with a sufficient protective angle. Furthermore, a sufficient separation distance s has to be kept. Antennas with 360 emitting characteristics are used for different radio applications. These antennas are also known as omnidirectional antennas on the market. Typical applications for omnidirectional antennas in practice are e.g. private mobile radio (PMR) systems, emergency call networks and sometimes also GSM networks. However, they are only applied in GSM networks, if there is a low frequency of radio waves. For omnidirectional antennas it has to be considered that metal structures situated close to them have a negative influence on the emitting characteristics, i.e. they are attenuated by the structures. The more far away the metal structures are situated from the antenna, the less they interfere with the emitting characteristics. To evaluate how and how much influence close metal structures have on the emitting performance, products of DEHN + SÖHNE have been tested under these criteria together with the company Kathrein in Rosenheim, Germany. If the HVI Conductor of the DEHN Conductor System is used for isolated air-termination systems, a maximum separation distance of 0.75 m in air has to be maintained. For maximum wind velocities of 145 km/h, a mechanical distance of 1 m between the antenna and isolated airtermination system was defined under consideration of the mechanical deflection of the antenna and air-termination system when being stressed by wind loads. The result of a radio-specific evaluation is a distance corresponding to a quarter of the wave length. The following illustrations will show the calculation of the wave length and a table. Private mobile radio systems often work in a frequency range of 40 MHz. The presently existing emergency call networks (fire brigade, police, etc.) work typically in frequency ranges of 80 MHz and 160 MHz. The future digital emergency call networks for authorities, organisations and emergency call networks will work with a frequency of 400 MHz. Present GSM networks communicate with 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and UMTS networks with 2 GHz. The corresponding wave length can be taken from the above table. 39 Isolated Air-termination Systems for Omnidirectional Antennas Examinations have been performed for application of an air-termination system which is installed in parallel to the antenna with a diameter of 50 mm (metal mast) and the HVI conductor with a diameter of 20 mm (copper conductor with a diameter of 5 mm). The detailed test results can be requested from DEHN + SÖHNE. The technical implementation of the isolated air-termination system is shown in Fig. 1. It is based on an omnidirectional antenna with a length of approx mm and an insulating pipe with a 1000 mm long airtermination tip. Part Nos , or can be used for the design shown according to the used HVI conductor I, II or III (e.g. black). The lengths of the omnidirectional antennas can be up to approx mm. These lengths require customised types of the insulating pipe with an air-termination rod up to 2500 mm for covering the corresponding protective area. Fig. 2 shows a possible design and the required types. For connecting the HVI conductor to the airtermination rod, a special connecting element is required. This connecting plate for the HVI conductor consists of a terminal bolt (D = 16 mm) and a KS connector (6-10 mm). Fixing the construction with the insulating pipe at the anntenna mast in a distance requires special supports. The type of these distance holders is shown in Fig. 3. Minimum two distance holders per insulating pipe of the isolated air-termination system must be mounted. This can be obtained according to the diameter of the mast.
