2 Direct Lightning Strikes. The Protection System. The basic function of an external lightning protection system is to intercept the lightning at a preferential point of discharges and to conduct it down to the earthing system and disperse the lightning current safely in the ground. For decades the Faraday Cage system has been safely used to protect structures from lightning damage. DEHNiso is a practical, easy to install modular isolated air termination system and is suitable for all types of sites, roof structures and installations. DEHNiso air termination system will intercept the direct lightning strike and protect the equipment on the roof from direct lightning strike damage whilst maintaining safe separation distances from the electrical equipment. Apart from free standing rods, interconnecting catenary wires and fixings are available for 8 mm and 10 mm Ø wire sizes. For rod heights exceeding the self supporting limit, stay wires and connection brackets are also available. In modern structures more and more electrical equipment, air-conditioning equipment and area lighting is used and installed on the roof structure where it is highly exposed and vulnerable to direct lightning strikes. The DEHNiso components include individual isolated air termination rods, interconnecting air termination conductor where more than one rod is used in the design. Without proper protection this results in partial lightning currents entering the building and resulting in damaging spark overs to electrical and other conducting services. The development of modern structures with its expanding electrical services mounted on roof tops continues unfortunately the general lightning protection systems have not kept pace with such developments. The expansion of roof top equipment requires additional lightning protection methods, namely isolated air termination systems, to avoid direct strikes to the equipment mounted on the roof tops and resultant damaging partial lightning currents from entering the building. Fixing brackets and clamps form part of the DEHNiso installation programme. No matter whether fixing to pipes, flats of sloping walls and roofs, there are brackets or clamps available to suit your need. The isolating air termination rods are available in standard lengths of up to 3 m and made of reinforced 16 mm Ø glass fibre. These rods can be fixed or locked into position by special socket connectors. To determine the safe separation distance (distance from rod to equipment), the factor km = 0.7 should be applied (equivalent to 0.7 m in air).
