Important Note: Even though a turning challenge is announced for a meeting, this does not mean that other items can t be brought for the show & tell. Feel free to bring in what you ve created and don t feel you have to be a master turner to show off your work. Everyone has to start as a novice. The Turning Challenge for November s meeting is Something Holiday in Nature. This Month s Featured Demonstrator: Chris Hoehle Chris Hoehle is a relatively new member of Front Range Woodturners and has been turning wood for about three years. He received his first instruction in woodturning at Red Rocks Community College and since then he has studied with Christian Burchard and Jacques Vesery at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Chris will demonstrate the process he used to create the series of end grain vases he has been working on lately. While the main topic of the demo will be various methods of end grain hollowing, including the use of scrapers, gouges, and hook tools, he will also discuss some of the basics of using milk paint and a fairly low-cost "no power tools required" approach to getting started with carving on turned pieces. Segmenting Shop Talk Discussion Meeting Saturday, October 29 th from Noon to 4pm. In Rockler s Basement. Okay, we re doing it! The segmenting shop talk discussion meeting is on! All persons interested in segmenting are invited to come and share, from those wanting to start segmenting to those who have been doing it to whatever degree. Let s meet and share what we know. Marley sells the plans for under 3 bucks or he ll make you one too. Check out the website for other turning items of interest as well! Thanks Ron. Perpetual Turning John Chart Brought in this bowl out of Figured Maple w/danish Oil and Renaissance wax finish for the Perpetual Turning. Events of October October s Demo Cindy Drozda's October 2011 Demonstration Related by Katherine Kowalski Cindy Drozda presented "Urchin Ornaments" at October's meeting. The most commonly used urchins are "Phyllacanthus Imperialis," also known as "Sputnik" urchins (in the catalogs), or "Lance" urchins online. They can be purchased from a variety of sources, including woodturning catalogs (most convenient), or Googled online, which may afford the best price, provided you are willing to purchase a quantity. This type of urchin is sturdy enough to use as is, and does not require foam filling or an inserted dowel to prevent breakage. While machining, the urchin has a tendency to split at the seams. To prevent this, coat the inside with a thick layer of Mod Podge. (If gilding the outside, coat it with Mod Podge too. Otherwise, you can seal the outside with clear acrylic spray lacquer. The natural holes in the urchins are pentagonal to make them round, machine them with a specially-made mandrel for the purpose: a cone shaped bit of wood that ends in a flat, coated with high-quality sandpaper. (Make several sizes to fit the different size holes in the urchins). Machine the urchin at SLOW speed to prevent catches. This will make a round, parallel-sided hole into which you can adhere a woodturned finial. Make another mandrel, cone shaped. This one will create a chamfer on the bumps near the main hole. (The bumps must be shaped so that they will not interfere with the wooden finials). After machining, clean the edges with a wire-bristled brush. Decide which end of the urchin is "up. Cindy generally prefers that the larger hole be on the top, for aesthetic purposes, so that it creates an implied line, gracefully linking the top and bottom finials. Wood selection should be a tightgrained wood that will hold detail. A "plain" colored wood will work best with

3 a "wild" patterned gilding sheet. Holly, African Blackwood, pink ivory, cherry, or maple are recommended as choices for finials. Begin with the top "cap" of the ornament. Measure the opening of the hole, and transfer this dimension to the wood. Remember a shorter tenon, (especially when undercut), makes for a lighter-weight ornament. Be sure to match the angle of the chamfer on the machined urchin bumps to the chamfer you are turning in the wood. After reverse-chucking to finish the piece, sand, then create a flat spot, and drill a hole for the ornament hanger/eye screw. Choose a hanger that will complement the grandeur of your ornament, not cheapen it. Next, turn the finial. Be careful to adjust your proportions to enhance the piece. Cindy has found that many different proportions will work, with the exception of the finial being the exact height of the urchin, or the finial length being equal to the diameter of the urchin: those choices "don't look right." Remember to use Cindy's "Four Guidelines to Finial Success" 1. No Tailstock. 2. Support the cutting force with equal pressure from the other side of center. 3. Always work on well-supported material. 4. Use a light touch and a careful aim. 5. (And this one snuck in!) Good light & vision. Aesthetically, Cindy prefers a tapered look to the "core" and also to the outside of the piece. After finishing the finial, part off and set aside. The gilding process begins with application of the size. Because the entire outside of the urchin needs to be coated, Cindy has developed a "high tech" adjustable mandrel to hold the urchin. She uses a dowel with masking tape wrapped around the top. If it's too thick, take off a piece of tape. Don't forget the proprietary stand a bit of wood with a hole drilled to fit the dowel. Wunda Size is the adhesive recommended for sticking metal leaf it is "aggressively tacky. Apply the Page 3 size to the urchin make it wet, but there should be no puddles. Wait 15 minutes for it to come to tack before applying the metal leaf. Cindy demonstrated with Mona Lisa Variegated Red Leaf. Place a piece of stretch wrap on the table, then two leaves of the variegated metal, with the "best side" down. Then, with the urchin still on the mandrel, place it in the center of the leaf. Lift the sides of the shrink-wrap all around the urchin, then use soft foam to press it in and around the irregular surface of the urchin. Use stiff, flatended stippling brush to get into all the details. After the size dries completely, (after several hours, ideally), use a soft mop brush to skew off the excess leaf. Make a finer "brush" from a cotton ball wrapped in a small square of real velvet; (imitation, crushed velvet, or velveteen will NOT do). The long, soft fibers will help brush away any excess bits of metal leaf. If needed, handle the urchin with the stretch wrap to avoid scratching the surface. For all the gluing, epoxy is recommended. (5-minute is OK for regular ornaments, use a higher quality for high-end pieces). Cyanoacrylate (CA) Glue is NOT advised. First, glue the metal ornament hanger into the cap. The top cap will be adhered first, since it will bear the most weight of either joint. Apply the epoxy to the top of the urchin around the hole. Insert cap. Now, invert the urchin, globbing some more epoxy over the joint, allowing the adhesive to flow into the joint aided by gravity. To hold the ornament level, place it over a foam "washer" (the kind that come in stacks of blank CDs/DVDs), placed over a tube. After the epoxy has dried, then glue in the finial by globbing the epoxy on and inserting the tenon into the urchin. This time, place the ornament so that the finial goes through the washer, allowing the epoxy to flow over the joint. Gilding supplies, including metal leaf, size, gilding knives, etc. can be found at various sources online, and in local art/craft supply shops. 10 Resources &B Rare Woods is an online veneer source specializing in exceptional veneers. They are local, in Golden, CO. Check them out online at They have over half a million square feet of veneers of all kinds. Perhaps of interest to us segmenters is their stock of Italian Dyed veneers in a wide range of colors. These dyed veneers are first double bleached and then dyed using a vacuum process, which allows the veneer to be colored all the way through. Their veneer pricing seems to be quite reasonable. For instance: 0.96 cents per square foot, dyed veneers at $3.10 per square foot. I ll be bringing in a sample set of their dyed veneers to our next meeting. Jonathan Medina of Green Giant Your Tree & Turf Professionals has a variety of burls to choose from. His number is Rockler Patronizing their store is the best thank you we can give Rockler for their generosity in letting us use their facilities for our ever-growing membership.
