Words from our President Dear Washington DC Silhouettes, Thank you for letting me lead this great group of women united in our singular purpose of supporting our Kappa Men. We take care of business efficiently, support each other no matter what the undertaking, and have a great time. The best part of our meetings is our fellowship, and I hope that we can continue to support and uplift each other. This has been a great year with lots of activity and involvement from our members. I must thank the wonderful executive board for all of their dedication, help and DC Silhouettes at the Historic Kappa House May 31, 2014 support. No task was to small or too large to handle. And let me also thank our wonderful membership the largest in the Eastern Province. We work together, play together and move forward. Since the holiday party we have enjoyed a fabulous newsletter, hosted a wonderful tea, had a small but mighty turnout at the Silhouettes Province Meeting, enjoyed a wonderful inaugural Day Party, and will end the year with the swearing in of new officers. We have lots to celebrate and a strong foundation to build on. Ladies, let s keep it going and make special effort to move President Cheryl Teare and her Kappa, Presley R. 2 2 Mother/Daughter Tea Absolutely Lovely! By Tamalyn Smith, Chair, Mother/Daughter Tea I would like to thank my amazing Tea Committee composed of Silhouette Sabrina Davis, Silhouette Rachel Myers, and Silhouette Linda TyranceStrickland. We were supported by several other members of the chapter who pitched in, as well as friends who lent a hand. Special thanks to Mrs. Thommie Yearwood, and the Thurgood Marshall Heritage Center for opening their doors to our chapter. Thanks to THE SILHOUETTE our President Cheryl Teare for trusting the committee to put this event together. The Afternoon Tea was absolutely lovely! We had approximately 60 members, family, and friends in attendance, and we took our chapter photo. The room was beautifully decorated. The ladies were beautiful in their afternoon tea attire and sophisticated hats. The mood was warm and cheerful, the food was tasty and the games were fun! I whole-heartedly and sincerely thank you for the sharing of fun, daughters, friends and each other. We look forward to everyone joining us again next year. Sisterly Love, Silhouette Tamalyn Smith

3 SUMMER EDITION 3 DC Silhouettes Descend on Eastern Province 2014 DC Silhouettes Cheryl Teare, Tanek Jenkins, Shelly Jackson and Katherine King Cooper. DC Silhouettes Tamalyn Smith, Linda Henderson, Cheryl Teare, Sabrina Davis and Katherine King Cooper. By Katherine King Cooper, First Vice President and Chair of Membership The DC Silhouettes, five Silhouettes strong, descended on the 2014 Eastern Province meeting hosted by the College Park/Sandy Spring (MD) chapter at the Hilton Hotel in Tysons Corner, VA. Representing the chapter were Silhouette President Cheryl Teare, Katherine King Cooper, Tamalyn Smith, Sabrina Davis and past president Linda Henderson. Although few in number, our presence was felt and our voices were heard. We attended the Silhouette Business meeting where President Teare presented the DC Silhouettes Yearly report and cast her vote to incorporate changes to the Amenities guidelines; joined the Eastern Province By-Laws committee; and attended the Open Public Meeting. With 50 members, we, the DC Silhouettes, were recognized as the largest Silhouette chapter in the Eastern Province for the 2nd straight year. During the Silhouettes Banquet, Madam President Teare graciously accepted the award on behalf of the chapter. In addition, Silhouette Linda Henderson was presented with the award for Outstanding Washington, DC Silhouette, recognizing her service, leadership and commitment to our chapter. Let us all congratulate and thank Silhouette Henderson for her dedication and Labor of Love! Under her presidency and leadership a strong Silhouette bond and camaraderie were developed within our chapter. Even more, we had the pleasure of spending time with other sister Silhouettes within the Province, and with our own National Silhouette President, Jacqueline Sharp Massey, who graced us with her smile, wisdom and love. Next year, we look forward to seeing more of you at the Eastern Province meeting so that our presence can continue to be felt and our voices can continue to be heard. 4 4 Day Party Raises Money for Historic Kappa House By Shelly Jackson, Chair, May Fundraiser The DC Silhouettes, associated with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter, hosted a fundraising Day Party on May 31st to benefit the Historic Kappa House Foundation and the Kappa Scholarship Endowment Fund ( KSEF ). The fun-filled event at the Kappa House was well attended with an estimated 130 tickets sold. The second floor presented a THE SILHOUETTE decorative buffet and cocktail bar. The bar was well stocked and the food plentiful, all thanks to generous donations from the Silhouettes. Jonathan Newton and his Fiancé Renee Reed. The Day Party boasted a Gentleman s Trunk Raffle and a Cinderella Shoe Raffle. Brother Michael Doc Holiday won the Gentleman s Trunk. The Cinderella Shoe Raffle was won by a gentleman guest. I thank everyone for their generous contributions, precious time and commitment to making this event successful. There were also vendors as well as hand and line dancing lessons provided by Brother Prizes were awarded for Most Stylish Couple, Most Improved Dancing and Best Dancers.

5 SUMMER EDITION Silhouettes Celebrate Father s Day in Kappa Style By Desireé C. Boykin, Reporter On a perfectly sunny and clear day in Argyle Local Park, Silver Spring, Maryland, the DC Silhouettes and Kappa Alpha Psi Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter celebrated Father s Day in Kappa style. Hundreds turned out for food, games and fellowship. The Kappa Kook Off awarded prizes for best entrée, best side dish and best dessert. Silhouette Shelly Jackson led the young and young at heart in three-legged races and sack races. The Silhouettes provided face-painting for the children and the Kappa Leaguers capped off another successful year. A great time was had by all who attended. Happy Father s Day! 5

Boykin, Reporter At our final meeting of the year, the DC Silhouettes installed our newly elected Officers. Past President and 2014 Outstanding Silhouette awardee, Mrs. Linda Henderson officiated. She opened the ceremony in prayer and then charged each new officer with the duties of her position. The traditional ceremony, included the lighting of candles, the presentation of a red or white flower to the Silhouette Officer and the collective reading of the oath of office. Riddle-Fletcher Many of us had the pleasure of knowing Silhouette Alison Fletcher, the 8th Eastern Province Silhouette Coordinator, A member of the Baltimore Silhouettes, Alison devoted her time and many talents to her chapter and our province. Alison passed away on July 2, 2014 following a hard fought battle with cancer. Let us all keep her, her Kappa, Nate Fletcher, and her sister Silhouettes in our thoughts and prayers. Silhouette Dr. Shelvie Anne Lee McCoy This year the DC Silhouettes lost one of our founding members, Mrs. Shelvie Anne Lee McCoy. Let us take a moment to pray for her family as we honor her memory.
