Workshops are designed to give participants a chance to experience many different activities related to 4-H project areas. Workshops fill up fast, so be sure to register early! New this year, 4-H members can bring a non-4-h friend, so be sure to invite a friend that might want to learn more about 4-H! 3 Class Descriptions VISUAL ARTS: All Boxed In: You don t need to spend a lot of money on designer jewelry or trinket boxes, when you can make your own! Design your own box out of paper and cardboard and use it to store your treasures. Altered Art: Create amazing art in this class using paper, foam, beads, and more! (please bring a photo of yourself) (double session) Beaded Jewelry: Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own jewelry? Come learn some basic techniques and make a beaded necklace or bracelet to take home. Beginning Calligraphy: Although practice makes perfect, you can easily learn the basic strokes to get you started in calligraphy. In this workshop, you ll write a short poem or verse and soon you ll be able to create gifts on your own with your new writing ability (this class is not recommended for lefties). (Ages 10 and up) Creative Card Making: Tired of sending the same old cards to friends? Come m ake three one-ofa-kind greeting cards using paper, ink, stamps and your creativity! (double session) Creative Crocheting for Beginners: Start with a slip knot and in no time you will make a friendship bracelet, bookmark and more! Materials will be provided, but bring a G, H, or I size crochet hook if you have one. (double session) Decorating Flip-Flops: If you love flip-flops, then you won t want to miss this class. Decorate fun and crazy flip-flops with fabric or fuzzy yarn. (Bring your own flip-flops to decorate) Fabulous Fleece Scarves: Does thinking about a cold winter give you the chills? Learn how to make a fabulous fleece scarf to help you stay warm! German Stars: 3-D paper stars, Swedish Stars, Origami Stars those are just a few of the names that this cool paper folding project can be called. Long strips of paper are folded and weaved into a star, then dipped in wax and glittered. Glass Etching: Have you always wanted to try glass etching, but thought it was too hard? Well, come learn a simple way to etch on glass. You will be able to create beautiful pieces of art after learning the process. (Ages 10 and up) Leather Craft: Learn about the different tools used for Leather Craft and all the projects you can create using leather. Then put your knowledge to work and make a bookmark and a key fob to take home. Needle Felting: Do you know what needle felting is? Check out this class to learn how to turn carded wool into beautiful and creative ornaments. Please bring a cookie cutter without handle (just the outline type cutter). Origami: Come learn the ancient art of origami. You will be taught how to create the traditional crane and the flopping bird, each from just a piece of paper and your hands.

4 Quilling Creations: Quilling is the art of rolling paper strips into shapes. Come and learn the basics of paper quilling while making a fun project to take home! Scrapbooking Goes Green!: What can you do with coffee filters, paper bags, or recycled envelopes? Scrapbooking of course! Learn how to create your own scrapbook from ordinary materials and take home a one of a kind project. (double session) Please bring: small photos, paper clippings, tickets, etc. to personalize your scrapbooking pages. Scrap-Hooking: Crocheting with Fabric: If you already know basic crocheting stitches (single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet), you can learn how to crochet with strips of fabric. You ll learn how to prepare your fabric and will make a round or square trivet in class. (Ages 10 and up) HEALTHY LIVING: Break a Board!: Come learn how martial artists are able to generate power and break boards in this traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate class. You ll have FUN as you learn the basics of Shotokan Karate. Cake Decorating: Learn the basic techniques of cake decorating and then practice your new skills on decorating cupcakes, which you get to take home and eat! Cookie Decorating: Cookie slice decorating can be fun! Join this class to learn decorating techniques for creating tasty cookie treats. Dance Dance Revolution: Use the Dance Dance Revolution video game system to get up and move. Find out if you have the rhythm and energy to keep up with DDR. (Wear or bring gym shoes) 4-H Cooking 101: Come make some yummy snacks while learning the proper way to measure ingredients, and be safe in the kitchen. Wow your family with your skills at setting the table. 4-H Cooking 201: So you know the basics of cooking time to kick it up a notch! In this class, create and sample your own omelet, learn how to use a food thermometer and other safety skills that will make you a star in the kitchen. Party Planning: Every good party includes good food. Participants will plan a party menu, make party foods, and sample them. YUM! (Introduction to 4-H Cooking 301) SCIENCE, ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY: Escape to PowerPoint: Fun in the computer lab!! Learn how to use the PowerPoint program to make creative presentations that are sure to wow your teachers, family and friends. Fashion Design: Learn about the many aspects of fashion design and merchandising from current ISU students. See a demonstration of design and drawing techniques used in the fashion industry and participate in fun activities related to fashion design.

5 Flower Power: Come learn about different kinds of flowers and how to identify them! You will make and decorate a flower identification notebook to take home with you to use when you are working with flowers! Fun with Chemistry: See, touch, smell & taste the wonderful world of chemistry. This s ession will involve fun-filled, hands-on experiments and demonstrations exploring how chemistry affects our everyday lives. Fun with Editing Digital Photos: Learn how to fix photo errors on your pictures, and how to experiment with changing eye color, adding filters, modifying faces, and more to create wild and wacky photos. Horsin Around in 4-H: Have fun learning all about horse breeds, colors, feeds and tack. Gallop ahead in this class to test your horse knowledge. Kitchen Chemistry: Don t think that cool chemistry only takes place in the classroom! We ll whip up some edible experiments for all to enjoy. Plane and Fancy: Learn how to construct cool airplanes, while also experimenting with the creative side of aerodynamics. Plant Buddies: Learn to make strange and wonderful creatures out of grass seed, beads, eyes and more. This is a creative method to show you how to grow plants in a fun and easy way. Take them home and watch them grow and change! Pop Can Lamp: Make a lamp using a pop can! You will be using electricity, tools and an empty pop can, how cool is that? (Note: If signing up for this class as 1 st or 2 nd choice, please include an extra $5 to your registration fee to cover the cost of the lamp kit). Rabbits 101: For newcomers interested in rabbits, this workshop will tell you everything you need to know to begin a 4-H rabbit project. Topics include selecting a breed, housing, feed & care and showmanship. Rabbits will be used to demonstrate proper care and preparation of your rab bit for competition. Robot Power: Use the Lego Mindstorm robotics kits to learn the basics of robotics. Build and program a robot and have fun running the program. (Ages 10 and up) (double session) Small Engines: Prepare to get dirty and greasy as you take apart small engines and put them back together. Tools will be provided. Wear clothes that can get dirty. Spinnerbaits for Bass: Build your own spinnerbait! Proven to be one of the best lures for large mouth bass ever invented, you ll learn the different components of this lure, why and how they work, then put one together and take it home. Veterinary Science: Dr. Deckert will describe the average day for a small animal veterinarian starting with showing how you give an animal a physical exam. You ll also learn about how to take care of your pet, as well as other career opportunities with animals. Welcome to Modern Agriculture: What comes to mind when you think of a farm? You ll be surprised all of the things that are connected to agriculture. Join in fun games to learn about GPS, Cell Phones, and other High Tech Equipment used in farming today.

6 Wild About Wind Power: Design, build, and test your own ideas for the best windmill blades. We ll install your blades on a real turbine and measure the voltage output. The team producing the most voltage wins a prize! Wonderful World of Goats: Be ready for some hands on experience with real goats! Learn about different goat breeds, their purposes, as well as hands on training. We will have two fourlegged guests helping you learn all about goats! CITIZENSHIP AND LEADERSHIP: Babysitter s Training Mini Class: Come and learn important skills that will help you be an awesome babysitter! You will learn some basic care for children and activities to do with them. (taught by American Red Cross). (Ages 10 and up) Learn to Write Chinese: Have you ever seen Chinese writing or wondered what your name would look like in Chinese? Come learn about Chinese characters and learn how to write your name in Chinese. Read the Signs: Let me introduce you to a new way to communicate without talking. Come learn American Sign Language in a fun and exciting way!
