2 Amazing Authors A to Z In the Amazing Authors A to Z Reading Challenge, students read books by 26 different authors* with last names beginning with each letter of the alphabet. Not only does this expose students to a variety of authors and illustrators, it also encourages reading across different genres. (*For the letter X, they read an extra author of their choice.) Since this reading challenge is appropriate for both young and older elementary students, adapt it to fit the needs of your classroom. Younger students keep track of how many authors they ve read by coloring in the first letter of the authors last names on their recording sheet, while older students list the authors names of the books they read on the alternate sheet. Two separate book lists are included for both lower and upper elementary. These lists are not meant to be exhaustive. There are more wonderful authors out there that I simply did not have the space to list! I tried to include both classic and modern children s authors that have written multiple books. I suggest allowing students to read the books that interest them and to use the list as a reference if they need suggestions of authors with last names beginning with certain letters. (Even outside of this challenge, these author lists may be given to parents who want suggestions of great books to read to their children.) Upon completion of the challenge, students might choose one author to further study and fill out one of the two author reports. Ways to Use the Reading Challenge: Summer reading Reading Challenge Independent reading in class or at home (for a specific time frame or all year long) Read alouds by the teacher Read alouds by parents at home (for lower elementary) However you use this in your classroom, I hope it s a fun and exciting way to encourage your readers!
