1 Lower School Summer Reading 2016 Entering grade 3 During the summer months it is essential that your daughter read and practice her language arts and math skills so that she maintains the skills she has achieved over the course of this school year and does not lose ground over the summer months. Students who don t read over the summer fall as much as 3 months behind students who do read over vacation, while students who do read can gain 3 months on their reading level. By the end of the summer the gap in reading levels between those who read and those who didn't can be as much a whole school semester! Reading: Please set aside time each day for reading enjoyment. There is not a required number of books to be read during the summer vacation, however, each Lower School student should be reading for twenty to thirty minutes (or longer) four to seven times per week. Students entering grades 2-4 will need to keep a reading log. The reading log is included in this mailing and needs to be returned with the Summer Reading Poster assignment on the first day of classes. Enclosed are the reading lists for students entering grades two through four. Some of the selections are older books and may not be available at Barnes and Noble, however, AMAZON.com, Barnesandnoble.com, or your local library are good resources. The reading list is to be used as a guide when selecting books. Please do not feel that you must select books from the list. Using your local library and gathering suggestions from friends are helpful ways to select good books to read. When choosing books to read, be guided by your daughter s interest and reading ability. We want your daughter to find her summer reading a pleasurable activity, so please encourage and praise all her efforts. Summer Assignments: 1. Students entering Grade 4: Brain Quest 3: ISBN $10.49 Students entering Grade 3: Brain Quest 2: ISBN $10.49 Students entering Grade 2: Brain Quest 1: ISBN $10.49 If your child works on just a few pages each day, she should be able to finish her book easily by the end of the summer. Working each day on skills will promote maintenance of academic skills and help to increase retention. Please use this book throughout the summer rather than during a shortened period of time. *Encourage your daughter to continue practicing her math skills through MATHLETICS! *New students to CDSSH will receive Mathletics account information in the fall, but might enjoy using a program called IXL.com. You can complete 10 problems a day without an account.

6 Country Day School of the Sacred Heart Summer Reading 2016 Create a poster advertising 3 of your favorite books from your summer reading. Divide the poster into 3 parts(one for each book) On the poster include the title and author of each book and write a few sentences about each book to encourage others to want to read the book. Add colorful illustrations too! Bring your poster to school on the first day of classes. Have fun reading!
