1 Summer Reading at Trinity Rising Fifth Grade Trinity Presbyterian School 1700 East Trinity Boulevard Montgomery, AL Lower School Librarian: Keeli Osmer Phone: trinitywildcatroar.pbworks.com School Year
2 Dear Fifth Grade Parents, It is with great hope and intention that we develop a productive summer reading program for you and your family, continuing to instill a love as well as an importance of reading throughout the summer. Fortunately, our Trinity family is afforded a host of opportunities throughout the summer that not only enhance a child academically through their multitude of experiences, but also build character and family relationships. We are forever grateful for these advantages and only wish to enhance them through the priceless adventures of books. Often we are awakened to places, characters, and plots our children have never known and settings that are beyond their wildest imaginations. Authors invite us to engage in worlds that are foreign to us and situations to which our lives will never be introduced. What a pleasure it is for us to invite you and your family to kick-back, enter the unknown, and expand our minds, our imaginations, and our dreams. Reading in this century demands that students develop high levels of literacy to be able to compete in a post-secondary world. Research indicates that students who read more, read better, and have higher reading achievement. Students who read independently develop more expansive vocabularies and achieve higher levels of reading and writing development. This is particularly true for students who have daily opportunities to read and is why we are excited to bring an effective summer reading program to you and your student. Did you know that students who do not read during the summer can lose approximately three months of reading growth, while students who do read continue to make gains? Our goal is for our students to continue to improve their reading skills throughout the summer so they are academically prepared at the beginning of the school year. Having a cumulative summer reading program throughout consecutive grades ensures our students are academically challenged, ahead of the literacy curve, and can compete with other college preparatory students. Trinity administrators and teachers have worked together to assemble a summer reading list that will not only engage your student, but also provide the opportunity for your child to become a stronger, more flexible reader. Faith-based books have also been selected to reinforce your child s spiritual growth. Talk with your child about what they are reading ask them questions to ensure comprehension. Accelerated Reader is an excellent tool that can be used to assess comprehension as well as guide your student in determining appropriate book levels. As always, accelerated reader will be accessible in the library and assistance will be available as needed. Lastly, thank you for joining us in encouraging your child to become a life-long reader.
3 Summer Reading 2011 All incoming fifth graders will be tested on four novels, one of the novels must be faith based. This year two forms of assessments will be implemented as we concentrate on both writing skills and technology. Fifth graders will take two AR tests as well as complete two online book reports. The AR tests will be taken in the library at your child s convenience. Computers are also available, for in library use, for the online book reports. A rubric and directions, for this report, are attached. A list of recreational and faith based novels have been included in the summer reading packet and children are encouraged to read and take AR tests enthusiastically throughout the summer. These novels are just a suggestion and are not intended to limit your child s selection. 5 WHAT IS BOOKHOOKS? Bookhooks is an online book reporting toolkit for young readers. Bookhooks facilitates the publication of online book reviews. Book reports can be editorial (traditional reports/reviews) or generative (stories, poems, photographs, visual art responses to books) and submissions can be supplemented with illustrations. Bookhooks is safe. We do not collect student data. All submissions are carefully vetted prior to publication. All reports are searchable (this is not a resource for cheaters!) Bookhooks is robust! Bookhooks is a creative website for Active Readers, with links, games and resources for readers and writers. Bookhooks.com Bookhooks.com may post reviews of books that we, at Trinity, have chosen not to add to our collection, please be mindful of this as you and your child browse their collection. Directions: 1. Log onto the website bookhooks.com 2. In the blue bookmarks bar, choose write a review. You may want to read some other student reviews before you get started if so, click browse reviews. 3. Then simply follow the instructions provided. Enter name (first name and last initial), your location, and book information. 4. Type your book review in the provided box labeled report text box.. (A rubric has been included for your convenience.) 5. Answer the questions provided upon completion of your written report. 6. Finally you will need to your report to: kparsons@trinitywildcats.com *Mrs. Parsons must get an ed copy of your book review in order for you to receive credit.
