1 Congratulations recent graduate and welcome to sixth grade! My name is Mrs. Francis and I will be your sixth grade English Language Arts teacher Reading during the summer is so important! I have selected four excellent books! Your required assignment is to read one of the following books and complete the attached packet. This assignment is due by Friday, August 17th. The books that you may choose from represent varying reading levels and genres: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (Young Readers Edition) by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, illustrated by Anna Hymas. This is the exciting story of William Kamkwamba, a young boy from Malawi, and how he used scrap metal to invent a windmill and bring electricity to his tiny village. His journey is inspiring and gives kids a broader, more global perspective. (Non-fiction) Lexile 960L Ghost, by Jason Reynolds Lexile 703L (Fiction ) National Book Awards Finalist, prior winner of the John Newberry Medal and Coretta Scott King Award Summary: Eighth grader Castle Ghost Cranshaw, the title character of Jason Reynolds new middle grade novel GHOST, is fast. As an African-American teenager growing up in the projects with a single mother who works around the clock, his ability to run has come in handy in getting him out of some bad situations --- especially the time he had to run. He never thought his natural speed would be of any other use to him until he saw a track and field team practicing on a local track and couldn t help but think he could outrun everybody he saw out there. Ghost crashes their practice and proves he can run neck and neck with their fastest guys, and their coach does everything he can to recruit Ghost to the team. The Girl Who Could Not Dream (a Sunshine State Reader for 2018) Lexile 681L (Fantasy) Summary: Sophie loves the hidden shop below her parents' bookstore, where dreams are secretly bought and sold. When the dream shop is robbed and her parents go missing, Sophie must unravel the truth to save them. Together with her best friend a wisecracking and fanatically loyal monster named Monster she must decide whom to trust with her family s carefully guarded secrets. Who will help them, and who will betray them? Hatchet by Gary Paulsen Lexile 1020L (Fiction/Adventure) - Classic - John Newberry Medal. Thirteen year old Brian is flying on a bush plane when the pilot suddenly has a heart attack and dies. Brian manages to keep the plane level until it crashes into a lake. Brian survives the crash, but that is just the beginning. Enjoy your summer and I look forward to seeing you on August 13th for a fantastic year! Sincerely, Mrs. Francis, M.Ed.
