1 6 th Grade Summer Reading 2016 Krista Davidson Language Arts 6 davidsk@cps-k12.org Dear Students and Parents/Guardians: As this school year comes to an end, I am already gearing up for next year. I am excited to be a part of the team here at SCPA, and I look forward to getting to know everyone better over the next year. I will introduce myself more in August. For now, I want to set you up for success with your summer reading assignment, so that we can have a great start to your sixth grade year. All incoming sixth grade students will read TWO books over the summer. All students will be required to read and one other book from the list on the back of this sheet. Please note that summer reading is a requirement that significantly affects first quarter grades. Excuses about not being able to find the books or not having time to read will NOT be accepted. Books can be found at many public libraries, book stores, and online. Joseph-Beth Booksellers and Barnes and Nobles are good choices for new books, and may be able to special-order books if stock runs out in stores. Inexpensive books can often be found at or at Half Price Books. Please read all of the following information carefully. If you have any questions over the summer, please me at davidsk@cps-k12.org. Sincerely, K. Davidson Book 1: Required Reading: 1) Read the entire book. (Note: The movie is different than the book. It will be obvious if you simply watch the movie rather than reading the book.) 2) As you read, complete the Holes packet included with this page. The packet will be collected for a grade on Friday, August 19 th. 3) Be prepared for a class discussion/seminar of the book on Friday, August 19 th. We will discuss a wide range of topics including the characters, setting, plot, subplot, and theme. Discussion grades are based on participation and text- based responses.

Draper Out of my Mind by Sharon M. Draper Summer of the Swans by Betsy Byars Kizzy Ann Stamps by Jeri Watts Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes Hatchet by Gary Paulsen Brian s Winter by Gary Paulsen (sequel to Hatchet) Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George Money Hungry by Sharon Flakes 2) Prepare a 2-3 minute presentation/book talk to discuss the characters, setting, plot (without giving away the ending), lessons learned, and your opinion of the book. 3) Create a visual aid to accompany your presentation. The visual aid should include the name of the book, author, summary, and pictures. It is YOUR CHOICE in how you would like to present it. For example, you could make a poster, PowerPoint, newsletter, scrapbook, treasure box, board game, etc. Be creative! 4) Be prepared to present the project of your choice book starting on Monday, August 22nd.
