Mrs. Schloat found sixty-seven copies of it available via the Connecticut public library inter-library loan system (Library Connection Inc.). You can also buy this book via barnesandnoble.com, Thriftbooks.com and shop.scholastic.com. Before reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret, carefully read these questions. You must answer all of them after reading the book. Your typed (or hand-written) answers are due in Literature class on the first day of school (September 4, 2018). 1) What s your opinion about the many pictures in this book? Do you think they make reading this book more enjoyable? Why or why not? 2) What s your favorite picture in the book? Why? 3) Why does the book skip forward six months at the end? Why don t we get to know everything that happens? 4) Why is the history of movies so important to the story? 5) Georges Méliès has two personalities. He s Papa Georges to Isabelle and Mama Jeanne, but to the world, he s renowned filmmaker Georges Méliès. How do these two parts of himself come together throughout the book? 6) Why is Hugo so scared of the Station Inspector, anyway? And why can t he just explain to him that his uncle went missing? 7) How do those old school movies sound in comparison to the ones we have today? 8) Brian Selznick originally said that he didn t think Hugo could be translated into a movie. Any thoughts on why he would think that? (Don t worry, Mrs. Schloat will be showing you the movie, in class, in September.)

5 At the beginning of Grade 7, you will be presenting a Book Talk in class based on your second book. - Your book talk should last between five and eight minutes. - You should rehearse your book talk at home in late August or the first few days of September. - Your book talk must include at least one of the following visual aids: a prop, a costume piece (worn by you), a poster or a PowerPoint presentation. - You are allowed to use simple note cards with reminder words on them but your talk must be primarily memorized and/or extemporaneous. - You will be standing in front of the class, casually telling your classmates (and Mrs. Schloat) about the book you selected from the list. - You must include the following information in your book talk: Title Author Brief information about the author Genre(s) of the book Any awards the book won Fiction or Non-Fiction? Setting of the book Main Characters Heroes? Villains?
