1 Mrs. Fair s 6 th Grade Summer Reading Assignment Directions: Students will need to read at least 3 fiction books and 1 nonfiction book this summer. When you return to school in August, you will have a test over Hatchet, as well as a graded assignment for the other two fiction books you choose. For the nonfiction, see the attached sheet and follow the directions. You MUST log the books you read on the form provided, and a parent signature is required in order to receive credit. Required reading Fiction EVERYONE must read this selection Hatchet by Gary Paulsen Brian Robeson, a thirteen year old boy traveling in a small airplane to Canada to spend the summer with his father, is involved in a plane crash in an uninhabited part of the Canadian woods. Brian then must find a way to survive and in the process, discovers much about himself and becomes a man. Fiction Choose two Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by O Brien If you have been looking for the perfect present for any exterminators in your life...well, this book probably isn t it. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is the gripping tale of a community of animals living happily together on a farm. Lest you think this is a tale only for lovers of the order Rodentia (which means rodent for those of you who don t speak Latin), though, never fear: there are also cats, crows, owls, and shrews. Thrown in for good measure are some humans who mostly just get in the way and cause problems for all of the more loveable characters! Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls The last thing a fourteen-year-old boy expects to find along an old Ozark river bottom is a tree full of monkeys. Jay Berry Lee s grandpa had an explanation. The monkeys had escaped from a traveling circus, and there was a handsome reward in store for anyone who could catch them. This novel, set in rural Oklahoma around the turn of the century, is a heartwarming family story full of rich detail and delightful characters about a time and a place when miracles were really the simplest of things... (One of Mrs. Fair s all-time favorite laugh out loud books!) Out of my Mind by Sharon Draper Mrs. Fair recommends this book to any age from 10 to 100! In this novel, Melody Brooks is an eleven-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. Melody s body is stiff and uncooperative, forcing her to use a wheelchair. Her mind works well, but she cannot speak. Melody hates the fact that she cannot make her thoughts and opinions known. Eventually, Melody is given a computer that helps her speak and communicate in a regular 5 th grade class. Unfortunately, even great success cannot change opinions of those who cannot see beyond the physical. Out of my Mind is a brilliant novel. The author has an incredible command of the beauty of the English language. Cheshire Cheese Cat by Carmen Agra Deedy Skilley, an alley cat with an embarrassing secret, longs to escape his hard life dodging fishwives brooms and carriage wheels and trade his damp alley for the warmth of the Cheshire Cheese Inn. When he learns that the innkeeper is looking for a new mouser, Skilley comes up with an audacious scheme to install himself in the famous tavern. Once established in the inn, Skilley strikes a bargain with Pip, the intelligent mouse-resident, and his fellow mice. Skilley protects the mice

2 and the mice in turn give to Skilley the delectable Cheshire cheese of the inn. Thus begins a most unlikely alliance and friendship. The cat and mouse design a plan to restore Maldwyn wounded raven and faithful guard in the service of Queen Victoria to his rightful place in The Tower, but first they must contend with a tyrannical cook, a mouse-despising barmaid, and an evil tomcat named Pinch. Will the famous author suffering from serious writer s block who visits the Cheshire Cheese pub each day be able to help? The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett The book tells the story of Mary Lennox, a spoiled, contrary, solitary child raised in India but sent to live in a manor in Yorkshire after the death of her parents. Mary becomes intrigued by the prospect of a forgotten garden, which has been closed and locked for years, and her quest to find out the garden s secrets leads her to discover other secrets hidden in the manor. Required reading Nonfiction Everyone must read this. Chasing Lincoln s Killer by James L. Swanson NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author James Swanson delivers a riveting account of the chase for Abraham Lincoln s assassin.
