3 Dear Grade 6 Student, We are ready to leave another fruitful year behind. We would like you do some work on your summer readers as you enjoy reading them. With this in mind, we have prepared a summer reading booklet to assist you in the understanding of the text. It also encourages you, as the reader, to think about what you are reading and reflect on how it affects you. Reading and completing the booklet will take you some time to complete, so it might be a good idea to create a reading schedule at the beginning of the summer and set aside time to complete the booklet thoroughly. Enjoy your summer break! Please bring you booklet and book with you to school on the first day back. Our objectives for you in this booklet are: Use correct punctuation (full stops, commas etc.) Use correct grammar, including word order and tenses Use complex (long) sentences when giving answers Show us that you understand the main ideas and themes of the story and support your arguments with quotes from the text 3

4 MAKE YOUR CHOICE For your free reading choice you need to choose a book that: You have not read before That is at your level (read one page of the book if there are more than 5 words you don t understand, you should choose another book) That interests you That you can finish in 1 month My book is called written by and I chose it because. ABOUT THE AUTHOR A. Do some research about the author! List the addresses of two web sites that you visited to learn about the author B. What did you learn? Put your author s name in the center. Write 5-6 interesting things that you learned about the author. 4

5 JOURNAL WRITING There are 15 journal reading entry spaces. Each time you read some of your book, fill in an entry. You do not need to fill them in when you read a couple pages. Use them when you read a couple of chapters. You may not use them all but you should complete at least 10 entries. 1) Date: Start reading your book. C. 16 A BOOK REVIEW When you write book review, you should keep in mind that a timeline, focus statement, paragraph plan and topic sentences will definitely help you write your essay. INTRODUCTION Begin with a general introduction Provide some background about the main character and his problem End with a specific focus statement ***You can write your review in either the past tense or present tense; make sure you keep all verbs in the same tense. MIDDLE PARAGRAPHS That s exactly where you are talking about the book and its storyline. So keep it simple and stick to the main events. Here s where you add your summary. Use transition words to help you move from one event to another. Here are some transitions to help you: Transitions The transitions below show time.
