1 Welcome to Third Grade! Summer Reading Assignments 1. Reading Log: Each child is required to read at least five books this summer. Please try to select books from at least three different genres and complete the reading log as you finish each book. (Due on August, 29, the first day of school.) 2. Peer Book Review: After you have read several books, choose your favorite one and complete the peer book review form. Please write (very neatly) at least 3 complete sentences to explain why someone should read this book and then draw (very neatly) a picture of your favorite part. Bring your book review to school on August 30, and you will present your recommendation to the class! The attached list may be used a guide for summer reading materials, but it is only the beginning. I encourage you to select additional books and read for the fun of it! Parents: Objectives for Summer Reading Your child s summer reading will help maintain his or her reading skills, improve fluency, and build a strong vocabulary. When parents and children enjoy summer reading together, children develop a love of books and reading that lasts a lifetime! Tips Use a calendar to create a reading plan with your child. Help your child schedule and plan ahead so reading is enjoyed all summer long! Set a consistent time for reading (morning, after lunch, or before bed), but also encourage children to read at ANY time. It is helpful to create the habit of carrying a book along on errands or day trips. Reading is a wonderful way to pass the time anywhere! Read books aloud to your child and read books together. Audio books are wonderful on long car trips. The entire family can enjoy them together! Enjoy a wonderful summer! Mrs. Colas
