2 Summer reading ideas for students entering Third Grade Read at least 4 chapter books appropriate to reading skill. The books need not be on this list. Record the books on the attached log. Please return it to your teacher in the fall. If you like animal stories, try these: Einstein, the class hamster by Janet Tashjian. Einstein, the hamster, loves trivia! When one of the students realizes Einstein s talent, he knows that he had better protect Einstein from the principal s snake! There is a sequel! Guinea dog by Patrick Jennings. A boy really, really wants a dog but gets a guinea pig instead. Things get interesting when the guinea pig acts like a dog. There is a sequel, too! Are you a fantasy person? Then, try these: Franny K. Stein, Mad Scientist by Jim Benton. Franny loves bats and jump ropes with her pet snake. Will she be able to defeat the monstrous fiend that is threatening her class? Be ready to laugh out loud with all of the books in the series. The lizard war by Jack Patton. The lizards are invading and the bugs are losing. See what happens when Max (a human) is transported to this land of human-sized bugs and lizards. Can he help the bugs fight off the lizards before it s too late? This is the first book of the Battle Bugs series. Zeus and the thunderbolt of doom by Joan Holub. You may know who Zeus is but do you know the funny stories of his childhood? Why does he get hit by lightning every year? This series (Heroes in training) is great for any fan of mythology. If you like historical fiction, try these: I survived: The shark attacks of 1916 by Lauren Tarshis. You get to step into the shoes of someone in a real crisis. How will you survive? There are several others in this series. My America series by various authors. These books all have the format of diary entries of young people in different historical times.

3 Ready to solve a mystery? Give these a try: Dog den mystery by Darrell Odgers. Can Jack (the dog) figure out who is behind the disappearing items? This is part of the Jack Russell, dog detective series. The Fenway foul-up by David Kelly. Kate and Mike help to find the lucky missing bat of a Boston Red Sox player. Each book in the Ballpark Mysteries series will be set in a different MLB ballpark! If you like non-fiction, try these: So, you want to be an inventor? by Judith St. George. Clever illustrations and presentation make her books entertaining. The truth about bats (a Magic School Bus chapter book) by Eva Moore. This chapter book series is a great way to learn about all sorts of topics. What was D-Day? By Patricia Brennan Demuth. These new entries from the makers of the Who was series tackle important events in history in the same engaging way. Picture books are still fun! Try these: Dear Mr. Mutt by Janet Stevens. Hilarious letters from dogs asking advice for problems with their owners. Make up a letter yourself! Janet Stevens is another good author to follow. Probuditi by Chris Van Allsburg. What will happen when a boy hypnotizes his younger sister? What if he can t undo it? This author has many clever books. If you like realistic stories, try these: Frankie Pickle and the pine run 3000 by Eric Wight. Frankie needs to win the pinewood derby race in order to gain his Possum Scout badge. Although Frankie has won many times in his dreams, can he win in real life? My new team by Ryan Howard and Krystle Howard. Join Ryan, (or Rhino) as he joins a new team and has to learn how to deal with the bully who might spoil all the fun. This new series is from MLB player Ryan Howard! The Soupy Saturdays series by Judy Blume. Alternating chapters by the Pain (the first grade brother) and the Great One (the third grade sister) make for some great entertainment!
