2 Dear Students and Parents, It is always a good idea for students to read throughout the summer. This is a wonderful way to fill lazy summer days, but it is also important to retain the skills learned during the school year. This year, we are not suggesting or assigning specific titles for students to read. Rather we are just asking students to read, read, read. This includes menus, road signs, pamphlets, stories as well as books. Our suggestions are series and authors that should appeal to all students. Please use this guide to lead you and your child to a public library or bookstore where the reading adventure can continue. Even more important than students reading alone is families reading together. It has been proven that reading levels rise as parents read aloud to their children long after children are able to read alone. Besides having a lovely close experience, your child s vocabulary and expression will improve. Reading should not be a chore it should be a delight! PLEASE CONTACT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY FOR SUMMER HOURS OR CHECK ON LINE AT Sellers Main Branch 76 S. State Road Upper Darby, PA upperdarby@delcolibraries.org Municipal Branch 501 Bywood Ave. Upper Darby, PA upperdarbymunicipal@delcolibraries.org Primos Branch 409 Ashland Avenue Primos, PA upperdarbyprimos@delcolibraries.org Some of the recommended authors write for older readers as well. Please be certain that the books you choose are appropriate for your child. Upper Darby School District "I don't want children to read just to perfect their reading. I want them to love books for the joy of it." - Coleen Salley Summer Reading for students entering First Grade

7 Summer Scholar Math Activity Board Students Entering Grade 1 Count the number of steps from your front door to the refrigerator Play Compare Toss ten pennies. How many heads? How many tails? Did you have more heads or tails? How many jumping jacks can you do in one minute? Is it more or less than 20? Play Turn Over 10 (or 6) Look at some of your toys. Try to sort them into groups. How many are in each group? Make a list of shapes. Try to find them around your house. Do a yes/no survey in your house. Ask 10 people Do you like the rain? Make a tally chart. Play Race to the Top Roll two dice and add the numbers together. How many rolls until you get a 12? Go around your house and count the windows and doors. Which do you have more of? Pick a number from Find that number around your house. Try again with another number. Grab a handful of coins. How many of each coin do you have? Roll two dice. Add the numbers together. Write the number sentence. Do it 10 times. Take 5 coins. How much money do you have altogether? Do this five times. Practice counting on from any number. Start at 4 or 17 or 32. Now try counting backwards. Write all the ways to add to ten. + = 10 Draw a picture of your family from shortest to tallest. Label each person. Grab a handful of objects (cereal, beans, etc). Guess how many pieces you have. Count to check your guess. Skip count to 100 by 5s. Skip count to 100 by 10s. Which took longer? Why? Write the first name of people in your house. Count the letters in each name. Who has the most letters in their name? Using spoons create a triangle, square, and rectangle. What other shapes can you make? Create a number book from Draw a picture for each number. Example: Draw 3 stars for the number 3. List 5 different places you see numbers outside. Draw a picture of each. Build something using exactly 20 blocks or legos.

8 Directions For Games to Play With Friends or Family The first four games require a deck of cards Compare Remove face cards except the Aces. Remember Ace = 1. Pass out all cards among all players. Each player flips over one card at the same time. The player with the higher number keeps both cards. If the two cards are the same, leave them and turn over another card. The player with the higher number keeps all four cards. Double Compare Same as above, but turn over two cards each time and find the sum. The one with the larger sum takes the cards. Close to 10 Remove face cards except for the Aces. Deal 3 cards to each player. Place them face up in front of you. Which two cards bring you close to 10? Which player is closest to 10? Ex. You turn over 5, 4, 3 and your opponent turns Ace, 8 and 3. You can make a 9 with (5 and 4), and your opponent can make a 9 with (Ace and 8) or 11 (8 and 3). It s a tie since you are both 1 away from 10. Remove the two cards you used and deal two more. Continue playing until all the cards are used Turn Over 10 (This game is a variation of Memory or Concentration) Remove all face cards except for Aces. Aces = 1. Object: Find as many combinations of two cards that equal 10. Place all the cards face down on a table. Players take turns turning over two cards. If the two cards add together to make 10, the player keeps the pair. If the cards do not make 10, the player turns them back over. The game ends when all possible combinations have been taken. Variations: Turn Over 6 Use only 0-6 cards and turn over pairs of cards that total 6. Collect 20 Cents Materials: Coins (pennies, nickels dimes), one die. Object: Add on to your coin totals until you get to the decided amount. Decide on an amount of money to collect (15, 20, 25, 50 ). Players take turns rolling the die. The player announces the number rolled and takes that number of pennies. The next player rolls and adds his/her pennies to the collection. You can trade in pennies for nickels or dimes as you go along. The game is over when the collection equals the decided amount.
