1 PRINCIPIA LOWER SCHOOL SUMMER READING SUGGESTIONS SUMMER 2015 Parents: Ple as e re ad this note care fully. Summer Reading is considered a requirement for Principia students. This packet contains suggestions of what to read, and it should be understood that our teachers DO expect your child to read as much as possible during the summer months. At the end of the packet, you ll find a SUMMER READING REPORT FORM. Please have EACH of your children who are entering first through fifth grade fill out a SEPARATE report form (parents may fill out forms for very young children if they need help). Please have each child return it to his/her new classroom teacher when school begins. Every child who turns in a Summer Reading Report form will receive a Reading Certificate from the Librarian.
2 Reading Goals: Incoming 1 st graders: Read or listen to a minimum of 10 picture books a month (30 for the summer.) Incoming 2 nd graders: Read or listen to a minimum of 15 picture books a month (or 45 for the summer.) Incoming 3 rd graders: Read alone, or aloud with others, or listen to a minimum of 400 pages. Incoming 4 th graders: Read alone, or aloud with others, or listen to a minimum of 600 pages. Incoming 5 th graders: Read alone, or aloud with others, or listen to a minimum of 750 pages. Individual 110% READING CHALLENGE: The teachers and librarian at the Lower School would like to challenge all upcoming 3 rd 5 th graders to put 110% effort into their Summer Reading. So we re challenging you to read not just 100% of the pages required, but 110%. This means that an upcoming 3 rd grader is required to read 400 pages. But if you give 110% effort, you ll read 440 pages! An upcoming 4 th grader is required to read 600 pages. But when giving 110%, he/she will read 660 pages! An upcoming 5 th grader is required to read 750 pages, but when giving 110% effort, he/she will read 825 pages! SCHOOL-WIDE READING CHALLENGE: As stated on the cover page, the children voted on a SCHOOL-WIDE CHALLENGE! Last year we blew our school-wide goal out of the water and had a fun day of celebrating reading together as a result! For Summer 2015, the SCHOOL-WIDE READING CHALLENGE is to have all of the students who will attend Principia Lower School in the fall read 50,000 pages collectively, over the summer! Remember, you only get better at what you practice, so let s all read, read, read! Here are summer reading IDEAS. They are meant to be used as a catalyst if you re at a loss for where to start this summer with reading. You are more than welcome to read ANY books this summer; you are NOT limited to the ideas in this packet.
3 Public libraries often have Summer Reading Clubs. ANY BOOKS READ FOR THE PUBLIC LIBRARY OR ANY OTHER READING CLUB CAN ALSO BE LISTED ON OUR PRINCIPIA SUMMER READING LIST SHEET (and vice versa). SUGGESTIONS FOR READING THIS SUMMER: 1. Read a family book aloud all together. 2. Have children read out loud to you as well as reading silently to themselves. 3. When is the best reading time in your home? Morning, evening, afternoon, in the car? 4. READ CONSISTENTLY. 5. Read what s interesting and fun for you and your family: perhaps a mix of fiction and non-fiction. 6. Go to story hour at the local library. 7. Read stories about places you might visit (e.g. Marguerite Henry s Brighty of Grand Canyon or Misty of Chincoteague). Note: Not every book by every author is always appropriate. Please look through a book carefully, read a little of it, read the flyleaf or the back, and see if it seems like what you want to read. For students entering First Grade: The following are books that help children who are beginning to read on their own keep up their reading skills. You may find them helpful.
