Students will keep a dialectical journal for each book they read, to turn in on the first day of school for a summer reading grade. Make sure to include the names of all main characters and locations, as well as what happened throughout the book journaling after every chapter. These journals must be neatly handwritten in one 8 ½ x 11 spiral notebook (or use your ipad or tablet-following the same format given), with each novel clearly labeled. Fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders will have dialectic journal entries for one novel in their notebook, but will read two novels. As soon as you take a note, move to the right hand column and write about that quote. The entries may include questions regarding plot, character, relationships, setting, or quality (do you like this or not). Also include personal reflections or connections that you have been able to make. It should not repeat what the author said. Read; take a note; write a note. Continue as you read.
