1 Name Summer Reading Program-2016 Entering Grade 2 Goals The student goals of the Summer Reading Program are to: 1. Read throughout the summer. 2. Enjoy reading all kinds of material. The school goals are for students to maintain reading growth from the school year, and to: 1. Develop stronger reading skills. 2. Expose students to quality literature. 3. Encourage a love of books/magazines in preferred topics. Requirements for Each Student When you return to school in September, you will be handing in the completed center fold of this pamphlet related to one of the required summer reading books. Read one book from the Required List for the grade level you will be entering in the fall. 1) Complete the activities on the last page about the book. 2) Read five other books or magazines of your choice. 3) Write the title and author for each of the books you ve selected on the bottom of the last page. 4) Get your parent/guardian signature before turning in the form on the first day of school!
2 Grade 2 Required Reading Choose 1 required read + 5 other books or magazines of your choice Some children may not be able to read these books independently. If this is the case we encourage you to read the books to or with your child. REQUIRED READ: Choose one of the next three books. Level 1: Henry and Mudge: the First Book by Cynthia Rylant Henry, feeling lonely on a street without any other children, finds companionship and love in a big dog named Mudge. Level 2: Frog and Toad are Friends by Arnold Lobel This book contains five tales recounting the adventures of two best friends Frog and Toad. Level 3: The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant The relatives come to visit from Virginia and everyone has a wonderful time. STUDENT CHOICE : Choose five more books or magazines from this list or whatever interests you. Fiction Level 1: Bone Mysteries by David Adler Young detective Jeffrey Bones is always ready to help when a mystery strikes! Roscoe Riley Series by Katherine Applegate Roscoe is a good hearted, mishap prone first grader whose story is both entertaining and thought provoking. Ivy and Bean Series by Annie Barrows Meet the girls, Ivy and Bean. Neither girls have many friends and are urged by their mothers to "go play together" they are not particularly enthusiastic as they do not seem to share anything in common. Yet, as soon as they get together they realize that they are fast becoming BFFs. Nate the Great by Marjorie Sharmat Nate the Great solves the mystery of the missing picture. Level 2: Patrick s Dinosaurs by Carol Carrick When his older brother talks about dinosaurs during a visit to the zoo, Patrick is afraid, until he discovers they all died millions of years ago.
3 My Weird School Series by Dan Gutman Visit with A.J. and his friends from Ella Mentry School. The weirdness is only just getting started! Ready Freddy Series by Abby Klein Freddy's always ready for new adventures Freddy creates the kind of problems that young readers can recognize and understand. Martin s Big Words by Doreen Rapport This picture book biography is an excellent and accessible introduction for young readers to learn about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin's Big Words is an unforgettable portrait of a man whose dream changed America and the world forever. The Sandwich Swap by Queen Rania of Jordan Al Abdullah Best friends Lily and Salma disagree over their preferred foods, but after trading sandwiches to see how they taste, the girls change their minds. Level 3: A Chair for My Mother by Vera Williams A child, her waitress mother, and her grandmother save dimes to buy a comfortable armchair after all their furniture is lost in a fire. Cam Jansen: the Mystery of the Babe Ruth Baseball by David Adler Cam uses her photographic memory to identify the person who stole a valuable autographed baseball. Dear Annie by Judith Caseley Presents a series of postcards and letters Annie sends to or receives from her loving grandfather from the time she is born. Baby Mouse Series by Jennifer Holm Meet Baby Mouse, star of the popular, award winning, hilarious, pink graphic novel series showcasing the trials and tribulations of life in elementary school. The sassy mouse has attitude to spare! Squish Series by Jennifer Holm Squish is a comic book loving, twinkie eating grade school AMOEBA trying to find his place in the world (or at least trying to make it through a school day). Owl Moon by Jane Yolen On a winter's night under a full moon, a father and daughter trek into the woods to see the Great Horned Owl. Can I Bring My Pterodactyl to School Mrs. Johnson? By Lois G. Grambling Get ready for Jurassic sized laughs as they follow a boy in his quest to bring a pterodactyl to school. And not just any pterodactyl: this one wards off bullies, loves to read stories, and makes an excellent science display.
4 Nonfiction Level 1: Night Wonders by Jane Ann Peddicord In this book, you can catch a ride on a light beam as it travels across our solar system and through our galaxy. Eliza and the Dragonfly by Susie Caldwell Rinehart Eliza, first afraid, names a dragonfly and becomes entranced by it and embraces this creature of nature. I, Too, Am America by Langston Hughes Carried by the wind, the words and music fall into the hands of African Americans across the country. Young black people are celebrating their place in America and dreaming of a bright future. Level 2: Flash, Crash, Rumble, and Roll by Franklyn Branley Explains how and why a thunderstorm occurs and gives safety steps to follow when lightning is flashing. Shooting at the Stars by John Hendrix Shooting at the Stars is the moving story of a young British soldier on the front lines during World War I who experiences an unforgettable Christmas Eve. His story celebrates the humanity and kindness that can persist even during the darkest periods of our history. The Noisy Paintbox by Barb Rosenstock Vasya Kandinsky was a proper little boy: he studied math and history, he practiced the piano, he sat up straight and was perfectly polite. The Watcher: Jane Goodall s Life with Chimps by Jeanette Winter Follow Jane from her childhood in London watching a robin on her windowsill, to her years in the African forests of Gombe, Tanzania, to her worldwide crusade to save these primates who are now in danger of extinction, and their habitat.
