2 Program Notes Since the last edition of the Klik, we have had a wonderful array of speakers at the club, ranging from the fundamentals and exciting developments in the latest equipment, to several incredibly wonderful photographic presentations, to the basics of preparing Photo Essays from Hilarie McNeil Smith. Ray Seto of Just Cameras, who stepped in at a late date to replace a speaker who was unable to attend, has always been a supporter of the Club, and did not disappoint us. He showed a vast array of cameras and equipment supplemented with his commentary on developments in the imaging industry, particularly the continuing emergence of digital imaging. I m sure that many members left with a new understanding of accessories, if not an outright conviction as to their next purchase (hopefully at his store!). As always, Hilarie demonstrated her complete mastery and creativity in the digital photo essay. Her presentation was not only educational, but emotionally engaging because it included many of her startlingly beautiful images. It was a testament to the audience s interest that Hilarie was bombarded with questions and ran over the normal meeting closing time. Amongst the photographic presentations, our own Jerry Soltys stood out with her wonderful crisp and awe-inspiring pictures of the SW U.S.A., California, Utah and the surrounding states. The magic of her records of Travels with My Yellow Tent, (which allows her to venture into many areas not accessible by road), will certainly inspire others. Her work is a testament to her belief that the images allow the soul of the photographer to show through Mark Bargent displayed his mastery of photography in the snow, with his essays based on trips in and around his property, including a particularly evocative essay of sixty pictures of one tree. He complemented these with a short presentation on the Alpine Canyon, in Navajo Country. In short, you could feel the collective stress of city life oozing from people s toes as they watched his work. Last meeting we were graced by the work of Carm and Judy Griffin s, Griffin Shorts, a number of short presentations covering a broad variety of subjects, ranging from the blazing sun of the Utah white sands to the mists of Grand Manan and Dreams of a Gardener, with a little bit of history thrown in around ghost towns. Carm and Judy s photographs were subtle and simple, and showed exquisite craftsmanship, both in their beauty and in the integration of their choice of music into their stories. Finally, who can forget the enthusiasm, encouragement and sheer pleasure of the club s Photo Essay Evening, which displayed great photos, great fun, and great blood sweat and tears? Still to come.ethan Meleg (It s not about the Gear!) and Boris Spremo (Photojournalism Never Had Enough) Doug Johnston Have fun, Do it for love! We should all be having fun when shooting and enjoy the world around us. For many club members, when photographing, it is sometimes more important to win awards or impress others than be proud of what you have accomplished. Do it for yourself first, shooting what you love, letting others enjoy your personal success! If you re thinking, how will this image do in a competition while you re shooting, you will never truly be creative. This kind of thinking can hold back or inhibit creativity! Yes, for some, it may help to have a firm plan or guideline to follow to make an image; however, it shouldn t be made a rule. We all see differently and the world is a better place for it! Photography is often subjective. Listen to Yourself, Have Fun and Do it for Love! Rob Kennedy 1

3 CAPA Conference July 14 16, Chestnut Street, Toronto Three days of mingling with the most exciting photographers from across Canada, and hearing experts demonstrate techniques, their passion and their images! Photographers from the East Coast to the West, many of whom are teachers and lecturers, will be in Toronto in mid-july to pass along their knowledge, creativity and expertise. Featured presenters include renowned professional photographers and photo journalists, such as Tony Sweet (Shutterbug Magazine, Author of Nature Photography), Ron Erwin ( Professional Photographer and Lecturer at Seneca College), Ellen Anon (Author of Photoshop for Natural Photographers), and Bernard Brault (La Presse) to name just a few. Filling out the speakers list are more big names including our own Rob Kennedy, Hilarie McNeil- Smith and Kevin Spreekmeester. Topics range from Creativity to Professional Techniques, from Natural History to Photoshop, from The Olympics to Calcutta, so don t miss out. In addition, as you know, The MCC is one of the supporting clubs for this Conference, responsible for volunteers to introduce speakers, and to staff an information booth. We already have several volunteers signed up to help during the three days, but as always we need more. Please let Doug Johnston, Janet Martin or Bruce Kennedy know of your interest. Make sure you register early; rates (and room reservation information if needed) are on the web site below Photography Workshops 2006 With Rob Kennedy Join Rob and discover the world of seeing, interpreting and capturing while exploring some of Ontario s most fascinating areas. 1-Day Creating in the Field May 13 th (full) (Art in the Auto yard) 5-Day Bruce Peninsula June 8-11 th & 17 th (Landscape photographer s paradise) New 1-Day Creating in the Field Aug 26 th (Art in the Auto yard) 4-Day Grey County Oct 13 th -15 th & 21 st (Peaceful Waterfalls and Great Fall Colour) There will be awaiting list for Workshops that are filled. 4 Freeman Patterson Special Club Members Presentation November 13, 2006 We are very fortunate and honoured that, because of Bruce Peters hard work, Freeman Patterson, an icon amongst photographers, both in Canada and worldwide, has agreed to make a special presentation to our club this fall. Please note, this presentation is a private show for our members. Due to space limitations. MCC members will only be allowed two tickets each. Freeman is the quintessential professional photographer and teacher, whose photographs have been published in books, magazines, journals, newspapers and advertisements, and have been exhibited around the world. He is the author of numerous books, including Photography for the Joy of It, Photography of Natural Things, Photography and the Art of Seeing, Namaqualand: Garden of the Gods, Portraits of Earth, Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image, Shadowlight: A Photographer's Life, and Odysseys: Meditations and Thoughts for a Life's Journey. His latest book is titled simply The Garden, and contains photographs of his property at Shampers Bluff, New Brunswick, and his thoughts about how his chosen medium provides not only a picture, but the opportunity for exploring one s creativity, and how that in turn reflects the development of the individual. Stay tuned for more information on the presentation and Freeman s remarkable career. GTCCC INTERCLUB COMPETITION The results are in for the 2006 GTCCC Interclub Competition. This year the Mississauga Camera Club achieved the best results ever!!!! Congratulations to all those who entered the competition and helped put our club at the top. There were approximately 1,100 images submitted for this competition and with digital being permitted for the first time, 43% of the images were digital. There were six categories in this year s competition and the winners are: COLOUR PRINTS MISSISSAUGA C.C. MONOCHROME PRINTS TORONTO C.C. SLIDES - NATURE DON MILLS C.C. SLIDES PICTORIAL CHINESE CDN C.C. DIGITAL NATURE MISSISSAUGA C.C. DIGITAL PICTORIAL MISSISSAUGA C.C. The overall winner again this year (as we did last year): FREEDMAN TROPHY--MISSISSAUGA C.C. Some wonderful images were submitted for this competition, and the GTCCC is presently putting all of the winning images and honourable mentions on a CD, which will be sent to our club shortly. Individual achievements in the competition will be recognized at a club meeting in the near future. Editorial The time has come to change the old KLIK format to the new 8 x11 layout. The old format had posed many restrictions as to the number of pages and content; as well, posting the KLIK to the Web was very time consuming. A review committee has come up with many exciting new ideas that in time will be incorporated into this new format, while still retaining most of the old features. This will continue to be a Work in Progress for many issues to come. Since This is YOUR NEWSLETTER, all comments are welcome. Fred Dixon Editor KLIK 3
