3 This is my last column as President, which does not necessarily mean that you won t be hearing from me again. But I wanted to make sure, as I hand over the President s position to Marcus Miller, that as many members as possible are aware of how lucky they are to have such a dedicated group of individuals on the board working on their behalf. It has been my great pleasure to work with them over these years, and, as I have said to some, this meant that all I had to do was wave my hands around vaguely in my role. This also marks the retirement of several from the board, and I emphasize that while they deserve a break from their duties, it doesn t mean that they are any less involved in the club some are even continuing in non board positions. But I did want to especially mention Bob Bateman s retirement as Past President. I only hope that I will be such a fount of wisdom as he, as I take on that role, but I certainly won t be able to fill in the vast knowledge of the history of the club that he brought to the table, as one of its earliest members. My thanks, on behalf of all members, for all his efforts and commitment to the club. President s Message Adieu I do look back over my term, and know that we have built a very sound club, the envy of many ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ other camera clubs around GTCCC. We are operating out of excellent facilities, thanks to the Mississauga Seniors Centre; our programs are varied, interesting and challenging; workshops have become so popular we had to expand the meeting space; outings take us to varied and interesting places; the coffee and cookies arrive every meeting night. The quality of members images is constantly drawing positive comments from judges at the competitions. And behind this is the solid expertise of the club administration doing the members record keeping, the bookkeeping and administering web sites and data bases and all the other stuff that is critical to this kind of success. We have tried new things, most very successful, some not so. I hope that you, the members, have challenged yourselves, and improved your images. But most of all, that you have had fun and met new people with like minded photographic passion Looking forward, again we are fortunate that many have stepped forward to work for the members. In particular, we are very lucky that Marcus Miller will be our new President. I know he will do a great job, and will lead us into new excitement, while retaining the sound values of the club. 4 Panoramic Pictures Hilarie McNeil-Smith PapaJohn, a friend from Michigan has been playing with his camcorder which takes 2 Megapixel still pictures. He takes a series of still pictures in a ticktacktoe or checkerboard grid and then uses Windows Live Photo Gallery to stitch them together! Apparently it doesn t matter if they are vertical or horizontal. I would imagine this opens possibilities for small resolution cell phones to take large pictures. Some folks may be interested in this as a way to create new interest with large panned images for their slideshows, especially if they have a camcorder or small resolution images. I'm not sure if Windows Live Photo Gallery will handle large resolution images. (You may remember some of my images have been used in the past to illustrate a technique.) 'Bog reflections' is a composite of 9 pictures taken in ticktacktoe sequence: 'Celery Flats - reflection' is from 6 pictures: 'PapaJohn', or John Buechler is responsible for writing and maintaining the tutorial website for Microsoft 'Photo Story 3' and 'Moviemaker'. He is finishing up a chapter about this feature on his website: Go to > Photo Story 3 > Import Pictures where he sums up the technique and also links to online videos made from them. Here are some examples: KLIK Mississauga Camera Club 4

5 'Patch of trees' was from a group of 14 pix going beyond ticktacktoe of 9 to a 'mini-checkerboard' of 14: 'Railroad track' is from 4 shots taken vertically: KLIK Mississauga Camera Club 5

6 The Velvia Film Effect Robbie Robinson ROBBIE S IDEAS FOR MORE EFFECTIVE IMAGES Fuji Velvia film is noted for its brighter colours and higher contrast. A recent speaker at our club recommended the Velvia Vision Photoshop add-on from fredmiranda.com (about $25US) to achieve the Velvia film effect. Before you rush out and buy it, here is a procedure you might want to try if you have Photoshop CS3 or CS4. It was published by Denny Tang of Photoshop Tutorials. 1. Open your photo in CS3 or CS4. Ensure that the colour mode is RGB. (Use Image>Mode if it is not.) 2. Bring up the Channel Mixer tool: Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Channel Mixer 3. Select Red for the Output Channel (instead of RGB). 4. Increase red to 150%; decrease green to -25%; and blue to -25%. 5. Check that the Total is now back to 100%. Do not hit OK, Reset, Load, or Save. Just move on to the next step. 6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 but now with the Output Channel set to Green. Set the red slider to -25%, green to 150%, and blue to -25%. 7. Repeat steps 3 to 5 but now with the Output Channel set to Blue, and the red slider set to -25%, green set to -25%, and blue to 150%. 8. Now press OK and you are done. Give it another name from your original if you are going to save it. (If you want to flatten it as a jpg you have to do a Layer>Flatten first.) These settings are likely to be best for landscape that need more zip, but can sometimes produce terrible results with portrait and other subjects. If the result is interesting but too dramatic, try settings of say 120%, -10%, and -10%. Remember they must add to 100%. You can also achieve the same end result in Elements or Lightroom 2 by different means, but they are less direct and more trial-and-error. KLIK Mississauga Camera Club 6

7 Another Alternative There is another, much simpler, way of increasing colour and contrast in your images but it is really trial and error. In this approach simply create a duplicate layer and experiment with the layer blend modes. The dropdown menu for these is up in the top left-hand corner of your layers window which you turn on by selecting Layers under the main menu heading Window. Try the overlay mode first. Argue with me! To keep the series going, suggest topics you want to see explored! robmiss@sympatico.ca The Cover Picture A Coleus Swirl by Sandra Roemer This photo of a coleus patch is a multiple exposure, ten images blended in-camera with a NIKON D200, f5.5, 112mm ( lens). A tripod was used to ensure that the point of interest could be kept in focus with each exposure as the camera was turned and zoomed just a bit for each of the ten images.'
