KLIK Season 56, Issue 5 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE MISSISSAUGA CAMERA CLUB May 2010 Kensington Window by Al Tilson The Mississauga Camera Club, an affiliate of the Mississauga Recreation and Parks Department, is a member of the Mississauga Arts Council, the Canadian Association for Photographic Art, the Greater Toronto Council of Camera Clubs and supports the GTCCC policy on nature photography.

May 2010 KLIK Page 2 Message From The President A Year in Review MCC Annual General Meeting May 6, 2010 The AGM is a time for reflection and renewal. Looking back over this year, the Mississauga Camera Club has had an exciting and challenging journey. I would like to thank the many volunteers who made this journey memorable and worthwhile. To identify the volunteers by name is problematic, if anyone is overlooked. So I would like to look at the activities volunteers brought to life. Volunteers came together this year to create and host in-house presentations such as: What do Judges Look For Focus on Talented Women Show and Share Photojournalism and HDR Photo Essay Competition Volunteers and participants made outings worthwhile. We had interesting outings to new events as well as familiar places: The Zombie Walk, Montsberg, Niagara Falls Bird Sanctuary to name a few, and an away trip being planned to Kincardine in June. The workshop/seminar program is top notch and was organized and presented by talented volunteers. As members, we are constantly facing technical learning curves or looking for insights into the old or emerging techniques of photography. Our workshop program addresses these needs and is second to none. Digital and Print Competitions were conducted flawlessly. Two teams of dedicated volunteers conducted our competitions, and in the end raised the artistic levels of many people. Our greatest achievement this year has been the winning of club trophies, individual trophies and recognition at the GTCCC interclub competition. Congratulations to all. One set of unsung heroes is the team of volunteers who each week handle the technical set-up and technical operations at our meetings. Every year we adopt more technology and we are continually challenged to deploy it to our benefit. Again, volunteers make it possible to stay on top of a changing world. Volunteers have given form and shape to one of most ambitious projects in the Club, namely the Nurses at Work exhibition. This project has many moving parts. Volunteers are working tirelessly to complete each phase. In the end we will all join together to celebrate at the opening of the Nurses at Work Exhibition on September 9, at the Living Arts Centre. Volunteers are what makes this a great Club and we can t say thank you often enough. Looking into the future, there will always be more projects, so we are always looking for willing people to step forward to share their time and talents with others. I would like to address my final comments to our executive team and to say thank you for your constant support, creative contributions and tireless efforts. You helped everyone here have a great experience at the Mississauga Camera Club. In closing I would add a personal comment and say thanks to all of you for this journey, it s been great. Marcus Miller President

May 2010 KLIK Page 3 Cover Image Kensington Window by Al Tilson 1 st place pictorial print for the Salon competition The picture is a montage. It is made of three layers, and here is how I did it. It's really quite easy to do: the first layer is the window in Kensington (the background layer); the second layer is the two-headed girl, which I removed from another photo using the Extract Tool in Photoshop. You drag and drop this above the background layer. Next, you go back to the background layer and duplicate it (ctrl-j). Then you position the twoheaded girl layer between the two Kensington layers. Now, make the top Kensington layer active, and reduce the opacity to 50%, so you can see through it. Next, use the eraser tool to erase the glass panes in the window, so the girl is visible. Now, you increase the opacity back to 100%, save the image, and you're finished. GTCC Competition Update The GTCCC Interclub 2010 Competition was a stunning success for the Mississauga Camera Club. With 133 images submitted from 34 MCC members our club participation was exceeded only by three other clubs in the GTC - the Toronto, Richmond Hill and Etobicoke Camera Clubs with 135, 160 and 211 images respectively. Only the Richmond Hill and Etobicoke Camera Clubs had more submitting makers with 35 and 50 members submitting Interclub entries. Of course, it is wonderful to win and the Mississauga Camera Club won a resounding victory and the Freedman Trophy with a total score of 295! Etobicoke and Toronto Camera Clubs tied for Second with 288 points. Congratulations to all contributing members as this was clearly a group effort. And special congratulations to the trophy winners: HILARIE MCNEIL-SMITH COLOUR PRINTS ALL IN A ROW Best Creative SANDRA ROEMER NATURE DIGITAL BLACK BEAR FEEDING CUBS 1st ND HILARIE MCNEIL-SMITH BEAR CUBS HM ND BRUCE KENNEDY COYOTE HM ND RAYMOND HSU SANDHILL CRANES HM ND RONALD MANNING RED NECKED GREBES HM ND JERRY SOLTYS SANDSTONE SWIRL Best Geology PICTORIAL DIGITAL HILARIE MCNEIL-SMITH DREAMWORLD 1st PD DOUG JOHNSTON THE CREEP OF TIME 2nd PD KAREN SIMMONDS SOAP STONE CARVER HM PD HILARIE MCNEIL-SMITH BIKE ANGEL HM PD Warren Davis Vice Chair and GTCCC Representative

May 2010 KLIK Page 4 GTCC WINNING IMAGES Doug Johnston The Creep of Time I had seen several impressionistic images of cities in the clouds, and thought I could do that. From there, the journey was to find a sufficiently prominent building to be the centre of interest, and as I filtered through images of Scottish cathedrals, Romanian castles and aristocratic country retreats, I realized that I had one much closer to home that would fit the bill; our local iconic Mississauga City Hall. But what to provide to the eye as a lead in? Well a winding river should draw the eye into the centre of focus. I started selecting and pasting; obviously I needed some cloud images as well. But as I worked, I began to wonder, (probably after getting depressed as I watched some of our so-called political leaders engage in more childish wrangling), what the future might hold for our Mississauga downtown. In younger years, I had lived in Glasgow and Liverpool, and seen the depressing creep of decay that can engulf a vibrant city when an industrial economy starts to collapse, and seen the expressions of disgust, often painted on the sides of abandoned buildings, although not often as artistic as today s colourful extemporaneous murals. I had some images of dramatic downtown graffiti from Queen s St West taken some time ago ( even before Rick Mercer popularized them). So I added them, and using transformation tools to again provide a path for the eye into the clouds. Since I had obviously crossed over the line into fantasy (that s fantasy, dear reader, not madness!), why not add a couple of mountains to strengthen this

May 2010 KLIK Page 5 passage as well? And in line with the idea of subtle decay, or is it progress, I added in the ghost of a disused industrial plant in the background. All of this work was done in colour mode, but I realized the colour made the overall effect too busy (I was working with seven images and several mirror copies), so after consultation with the senior art director in the family, I went to Black and White. This actually solved some problems of colour balance and lighting, but it also strengthened the visual impact. After that it was just a matter of adding some lighting effects, contrasts, dodging and burning here and there ( all the while keeping track of a myriad of layers).and so on. A real challenge was to step back and stop tweaking! Deadlines help here. As I sat down to write about creating the image, at Pradipta s request, I realized that none of the process was linear thought. Rather, it was an almost random journey, which as it built, created an excitement for me that I was onto something that I felt was pleasing, and hopefully a little disturbing. But remember, it all started with the thought, I could do that. So you can too! Bruce Kennedy COYOTE My image of the coyote was It was taken in late afternoon Kananaskis Country near Nakiska in Alberta, handheld from a car using a mm, which I had purchased that morning. The coyote was travelling parallel to the road on a slope about eye level. I stopped and shot out the passenger window. If you look closely, you can see a clump of snow on the end of his nose from digging for mice. The lighting, pose and sharpness made it an appealing image to me.

May 2010 KLIK Page 6 Hilarie Mcneil-Smith I'll start with the girls.. I was scouting with Bruce along the beach strip in Burlington one evening last summer. The sun was setting and we were looking for a good view of the water.. We encountered a little park and got out to take a look...these little girls were all sitting on the fence! It took my breath away.. I fired this shot from the distance. As we approached, they started to jump off, unaware that we were there. I spied their coach and asked if we could have permission to shoot, so they all climbed back on the fence and let us fire away.. I am by nature a 'shy' person photographer, so having them all face away was perfect.. being little gilrs they were all squirmy and giggling.. I think I took about four shots, and finally thought to put on my flash because they were almost a silhouette. I was so excited I forgot to remove the lens hood and got a dark shadow in the foreground. I worked at that to remove it, gave the image a pop of Topaz Adjust to add grain and character, and a faux HDR effect. the lens was my sigma 14mm with flash. I was swinging two cameras at the time, one with my lens. I took a few with that also, but preferred this image. Apparently they were just there to cool off after the game. It was one of those magic moments. I sent images to the coach and she said we made their day!

May 2010 KLIK Page 7 ALL IN A ROW The 'dreamer' is a composite of five images all shot at different times, even different years! I wanted to make it sort of an unbelievable fantasy, a reader on the beach, ( see below)but in a snow scene with a reflection on ice. The trees are from two different images from Richard's park in Port Credit. The ice from the path at Jack Darling park, the extra tree at the end from a field in the country somewhere. All were shot with an all purpose Tamorn lens. I blended the layers together, made a layer copy of that and added the figure, made a layer copy of the figure and turned him upside down as a reflection. The curls are from using the warp tool and a drop shadow effect.

May 2010 KLIK Page 9 The bearcubs were taken at Omega park on a Photo Safari led by Diane Skinner. This particular shot was taken through the car windshield in pouring rain. I was using my IS f4 Canon lens. BEAR CUBS

May 2010 KLIK Page 10 The 'bike angel' was a composite. it was a scene without character, but I managed to catch the rider in the air. I painted a background from another image, and placed the rider on the top after carefully extracting it. the angel wings were just a whimsy.. I have photoshop brushes that do that. I captured the original image with my Canon 70mm. BIKE ANGEL

May 2010 KLIK Page 11 Ron Manning RED NECKED GREBES This was photographed this past summer (June 13, late afternoon)) at Bronte Harbour using my 50D and IS zoom combination. This shot of the birds presented itself for a moment and then was lost. When submitted in the initial competition it was rectangular, the judges commented that they thought it would be better square and so it was submitted to the GTCCC as a square which improved its score.

May 2010 KLIK Page 12 Sandra Roemer BLACK BEAR FEEDING CUBS This mother black bear chose a comfortable, grassy spot to feed her cubs, as if posing for the camera. This was a magical moment, especially when she appeared to become somewhat bored with the whole event. She and many other black bears roam freely in a very large enclosed area of Omega Park in Montebello, Quebec. The image was shot with NIKON's D300 and my NIKON f 2.8 lens, on tripod. The settings were ISO 800, 180 mm, f 6.3 at 1/320th with matrix metering.

May 2010 KLIK Page 15 SHARE POINT 1) Jeffrey s Photoshop Calendar-Template-Building Script contributed by Bob Mongrain The author has made a Photoshop JavaScript script that builds calendars. The result of running it in Photoshop (CS2 or later) is a Photoshop document with half a dozen or so layers that you can then tweak and modify, add your own image to, etc. 2) Travel and Adventure Photo Contest Are you a TRAVELOGRAPHER?? How would you know unless you know what one is? Travelographers make their travel plans with a purpose. They're an active group that prefers to visit places that are off the beaten path and don't mind paying extra to do so. They travel for adventure, photography and to broaden themselves culturally. Does that sound like you or someone you know? Enter your most outstanding travel photographs, sponsored by Popular Photography and American Photo. Winners will be selected by a panel of distinguished judges and will be published in upcoming issues of Popular Photography and American Photo. 3) Camera Calibration in Lightroom One of the lesser known features in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is Camera Calibration in the Develop module. Different camera sensors render color differently. Camera Calibration was developed to enable photographers to adjust the white balance, hue and saturation to calibrate the image so it matches more closely with what they intended when it was originally captured.
