1 Spring is Here! Welcome Spring! Once again, we have survived another long, dreary winter here in the Midwest. To kick off the spring outdoor season BJO held our first hike at John Bryan State Park. Although the day turned out to be sunny and cool, we managed to check off a nice list of wildflowers from our early to rise chart, including snow trillium, hepatica, bloodroot, and harbinger of spring. The next annual event, the Smoky Mountain Wildflower Weekend (April 15 17), has a few spots still available. Normally this event sells out very fast, but, if you are a procrastinator you are in luck this year! Contact me at brian@brian jorg.com for more information and to sign up for the few spots still remaining. For the wildflower enthusiast, as well as outdoor photographer, the annual Smoky Mountain Photography Workshop will be held immediately following, April Over the years, many of you have voiced an interest in attending an organized orchid hunting trip to the Bruce Peninsula ~ one of the finest areas to find a host of native species. I am considering arranging such a trip. If you think you may be interested in taking the guided trip next May/June, please let me know*. If there is enough interest, I will get information to you regarding this premier location on the Great Lakes to see a great display and wide array of orchids. 2 PAGE 2 BRIAN JORG OUTDOORS Native Spotlight: Blue Eyed Mary One of my all-time favorite wildflowers, Blue eyed Mary (Collinsia verna) is a member of the figwort family. This winter annual germinates in late summer, and begins its growth by mid -March. The upper two lobes are white, while the lower two are a true blue, making a striking combination. Where this plant does occur, it can often cover the forest floor with a mass of color. Currently, we are growing this plant in our Native Plant Program at the Cincinnati Zoo in an effort to try to increase its availability as a readily available garden wildflower. Common Buckeye The common buckeye butterfly (junonia coenia) is a familiar butterfly frequently seen across much of the Midwestern United States. This species, most often distinguished by its colorful eyespots on both sides of the wings as well as the light-colored bars on the tips of the forewings, prefers dry sights and often barren soil. Although not a permanent resident here in Ohio, the common buckeye slowly works its way north through the summer, becoming more abundant in the autumn. Once they reach Ohio, they will have a number of broods through the season. These butterflies can often be seen frequenting host plants such as those in the Acanthus, Vervain, and Figwort families.
