At the best of times, the odds are stacked against this leggy 35-pounder surviving its first year; normally less than 50% do. But now populations across many parts of North America are in steep decline and scientists believe one of the reasons is that fewer moose calves are surviving their first year, so it has never been more important to understand what happens in the first year of a moose's life. This stunningly intimate nature documentary, filmed over 13 months in the wilds of Jasper National Park, takes viewers deep inside the world of moose to experience a mother's love and a calf's first year of life up close and personal. I m not sure why, but I seem to be more annoyed with the length of winter every year. It s not that I don t like the change of seasons, I just wish winter was a little shorter. I guess that s not likely to change much where we live. I also really don t care for the daylight savings time change in the fall, so I was sure happy to get the hour of daylight back in the evening when the time changed back this spring. Summers are certainly beautiful up here, but a bit too short! As I m writing this article, we re currently in the midst of our March fund drive. By the time you read this article, our March fundraiser will be over. First, I want to thank everyone who either called in a pledge, renewed their membership, or helped in any way with the fund drive. Second, I m happy to report that our March pledge drive to date has been a success. Honestly, I was concerned before the start of the drive. This past year, fundraising has been very challenging and our 2017 March pledge drive fell far short of our goal. This year we seem to be back on track and I want to thank you all for helping to make this happen. March is our biggest on-air fundraiser of the year and we appreciate and rely on the support of everyone during this important fundraiser. Your financial support is what keeps the great programming coming to you 365 days a year. If you procrastinated and didn t call in a pledge, it s not too late! You can go online at lptv.org to learn more and to make a contribution or call us at Again, thank you! Last month I told you all about two exciting upcoming concerts that Lakeland PBS is bringing to the region: The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Celtic Thunder X. These two outstanding concerts are expected to sell out, so you ll need to act fast to get your tickets. In fact, the VIP sections for both concerts are already sold out, but there are still good seats left for both shows. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will perform at the Bemidji High School Auditorium, Tuesday, June 19 at 7pm. Celtic Thunder X will perform at the Bemidji High School Auditorium on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7pm. You can get your tickets online at lptv.org or by calling us during business hours at These two concerts are an important part of our fundraising this year. By supporting and attending these concerts, you ll not only have a great night out, but you ll help to support Lakeland PBS. This month I again want to talk about the proposed federal funding cuts for pubic media. If the White House proposal to eliminate federal funding would actually be adopted by congress, residents of rural America would be the losers. Fixed costs like towers, transmitters, and production gear, along with the monthly utility and insurance bills are basically the same for both large metro areas as well as here in rural Minnesota. The difference is that rural regions like ours have a LOT less people to help cover the costs through individual support. That s why federal funding is critical for rural stations like ours. Here at Lakeland PBS, federal funding makes up about 1/3 of our total budget and also helps us to leverage additional state and local dollars. Without these federal funds, local stations like Lakeland PBS just wouldn t exist. Considering the huge impact this federal investment makes in rural public media, it s also good to keep this federal budget expense in perspective. For every $100 the federal government spends, less than one penny is spent on public media. This federal investment is a small fraction of what is typically invested by governments in other developed countries, but still makes what we do possible. Regardless of where you stand on this issue, it s important to make your opinion known. Go to protectmypublicmedia.org and let our federal legislators know where you stand on this critically important issue. Also, please take the time to thank our region s state legislators for their support because we have strong bipartisan support at the state level. In closing, I ll remind you again that a large majority of the American public, regardless of political affiliation, are very much in support of continued funding for public media. As always, thank you for your generous support! Bill Sanford - CEO Lakeland Public Television Premieres Sunday, May 13 at 7pm Loved by generations of women worldwide, Little Women is a truly universal coming of age story.
