2 Page B2 samoa news, Tuesday, February 21, 2017 Kings GM on Cousins trade: I had a better deal two days ago JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer Sacramento general manager Vlade Divac headed into All- Star weekend convinced it was finally time to part ways with ultra-talented center DeMarcus Cousins. Befitting a franchise that appears headed to a 11th straight season without a playoff berth, the Kings even seemed to botch that. Sacramento dealt Cousins and forward Omri Casspi to New Orleans in exchange for Tyreke Evans, 2016 firstround draft pick Buddy Hield, Langston Galloway and firstand second-round draft picks this summer. When asked Monday why he didn t wait for a better offer closer to Thursday s trade deadline, Divac gave a curious response that raised more questions than it answered. Most likely we would get less because I had a better deal two days ago, Divac said. I don t want to go into details. I don t want to discuss the process. Cousins will now team with AMERICAN SAMOA POWER AUTHORITY Materials Management Office another former Kentucky big man who has developed into an NBA All-Star in New Orleans Anthony Davis. Cousins is averaging 27.8 points and 10.6 rebounds this season and can become a free agent in 2018 unless the Pelicans can sign him to an All-Star caliber extension. The Kings have not won more than 33 games in a season since drafting Cousins fifth overall in 2010 and grew tired of his antics that included frequent run-ins with coaches, media members and officials. He leads the NBA with 17 technical fouls this season, leading to a one-game suspension earlier this month. He will be suspended again after his next technical foul and every two beyond that for the rest of the regular season. Divac frequently mentioned culture and character when explaining the thought behind the deal, saying the franchise needed a change despite being only 1 1/2 games behind Denver for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. I really love DeMarcus, Divac said. I think he s a great Po Box PPB, Pago Pago American Samoa Phone No.: (684) Fax No.: (684) bids@aspower.com REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS (RFP) RFP No: ASPA WTR Closing Date & Time: March 17, 2017 Issuance Date: February 15, 2017 No later than 2:00 p.m. local time The American Samoa Power Authority issues a Request For Proposal (RFP) to invite qualified firms to submit formal, written proposals for the: PAGO PAGO TO FAGASA SERVICE AREA WATER SUPPLY DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM UPGRADE Submission An Original and one PDF copy of the Proposal must be submitted in a sealed envelope marked: RFP NO. A person familiar with the situation said Sunday that the Sacramento Kings have agreed to trade Cousins and Omri Casspi to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for Tyreke Evans, 2016 first-round draft pick Buddy Hield, Langston Galloway and first- and second-round draft picks this summer. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong, File) kid. It just wasn t a fit right now with what we re trying to do. I wish him all the best. I hope this will have a positive effect on his career. The deal to pair Cousins with Davis sends a message that the Pelicans are more concerned with making a 25-game push for the playoffs this spring then where they ll be drafting next offseason. Pelicans general manager Dell Demps previous attempts to provide Davis a requisite supporting cast has been under increasing scrutiny as losses have mounted New Orleans is 23-34, 2 ½ games out of the final playoff spot in the West with 25 games left. When the deal was made official Monday, Demps thanked Pelicans owner Tom Benson and top executives Mickey Loomis and Dennis Lauscha for their continued support and providing the resources for us to be successful. This is an exciting time for Pelicans fans as we continue our quest for long-term success, Demps said. The Kings, who are a game ahead of the Pelicans in the standings, will now enter rebuilding mode without Cousins. They could deal other veterans for prospects or picks before Thursday s deadline but even the rebuilding plan has issues. The Kings could be forced to swap first-round picks with Philadelphia this year and also owe the 76ers an unprotected 2019 pick as part of a trade in July 15 made to create salary cap room to sign Rajon Rondo, Kosta Koufos and Marco Belinelli. Only Koufos is still in Sacramento. This trade does increase Sacramento s chances at two firstround picks this year because they only have to give up their top pick to Chicago if it falls outside the top 10. The pick from New Orleans is top-three protected. We feel very strong about this draft this year, Divac said. It s very strong, stronger than the past few years. It s time to start fresh. The Kings also get the 23-year-old Hield, who won the Wooden Award at Oklahoma last year before being drafted sixth overall by the Pelicans. Hield has struggled as a rookie, averaging 8.6 points per game in 20.4 minutes per contest, while shooting 39.2 percent from the field and 36.9 percent from 3-point range. He s talented guy, Divac said. His work ethic is exactly what we want here. Evans, who can play point guard, shooting guard or small forward, will be entering a second stint in Sacramento, where he was drafted in 2009 and went on to be Rookie of the Year. Galloway has been a solid reserve, providing scoring punch from the perimeter. Casspi has been playing about 19 minutes a game for the Kings this season, averaging 5.9 points and 4.1 rebounds.

4 Page B4 samoa news, Tuesday, February 21, 2017 No. 12 Ohio State uses hot start to upset No. 2 Maryland COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Ohio State got off to a sizzling start and then held off Maryland to get one of the biggest wins in school history. Kelsey Mitchell scored 31 points to lead five players in double figures as the 12thranked Buckeyes shot 63 percent from the floor in taking down the No. 2 Terrapins on Monday night. The Buckeyes haven t beaten such a highly ranked team in 24 years. Ohio State (24-5, 14-1 Big Ten) scored 35 points in the first 10 minutes on 14 for 18 shooting, led by nine at the half and held on as Maryland rallied in second half. The victory had Ohio State forward Shayla Cooper waxing lyrical afterward. Cooper played her last game at Value City Arena, which on Monday contained a vocal, hyped-up crowd of 6,500. When the ball is moving like that, it s so beautiful, she said. It s like an orchestra out there. It s just like soft jazz music. It s just so beautiful, and everyone was feeling it. It s just a beautiful sight. Thanks to a 14-0 run at the end of the third quarter, Maryland climbed back in the game and was down by two at the start of the fourth. They trailed by six with 1:29 left, but had to start fouling and couldn t make up the deficit. The loss was only the second for the Terps this season and their first in the Big Ten. Their last was a six-point setback to No. 1 UConn on Dec. 29. We ve got to get better, said a dejected Shatori Walker- Kimbrough, who led Maryland with 29 points. The Terps shot 42 percent, after averaging 50 percent this season. Cooper had 20 points and nine rebounds, and Alexa Hart added 15 for the Buckeyes, who won their 10th straight game. Brionna Jones had 21 points on aggressive play in the paint, and Destiny Slocum had 15 for Maryland (26-2, 14-1). I thought Ohio State was sensational, Maryland coach Brenda Frese. That s the best I ve seen them. Their first quarter punch really impacted us hard. They were really clicking on all cylinders. WHAT A START Ohio State jumped out to a lead at the end of the first quarter, led by Mitchell s 15, including 3 for 4 from beyond the arc. The Buckeyes shot an astounding 77.8 percent in the frame and put together a 12-0 run. They were 5 for 6 overall from 3-point range. When you ve got Kelsey Mitchell on the floor, that can happen a lot, Ohio State coach Kevin McGuff said. After going up by 15 early in the second quarter, Ohio State came down to earth, and led at the half. I thought we were very stagnant in the first half, Frese said. I m disappointed in our transition game. I think we didn t push like we normally push, and it caused some troubles. BIG PICTURE: Maryland: Stunning loss for the Terps, who likely will get another go at Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament. Ohio State: The biggest win of the season for a team on a AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Kalani Brown put Baylor on her big shoulders and gave the Lady Bears a huge boost toward yet another Big 12 title. Brown scored 35 points and No. 4 Baylor grabbed a onegame lead in the league standings over No. 6 Texas with a tough win over the Longhorns on Monday night. Baylor trailed most of the way, but stayed close as Brown dominated under the basket with her 6-foot-7 frame. Her five straight points in the fourth quarter keyed a 9-0 Baylor run that opened up lead. She also grabbed 13 rebounds and Baylor outscored Texas in the paint I didn t know I had it in me, Maryland s Destiny Slocum, right, drives the lane against Ohio State s Tori McCoy during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, in Columbus, Ohio. (AP Photo/Jay LaPrete) hot streak at just the right time, despite the loss of their best rebounder and No. 2 scorer, Stephanie Mavunga. Buckeyes now in position to win the Big Ten regular season title. I think we can do something Brown said. We held together and it worked for us. She had to do it after the Lady Bears played most of the game without senior guard and scoring leader Alexis Jones, who left with a knee problem early in the first half. Baylor attempted only one 3-pointer the entire game and that was a miss and continually pushed the ball inside to Brown who made layup after layup and went 15 of 16 from the free throw line. The win puts Baylor (26-2, 15-1) by itself at the top of the Big 12 with two games left for both teams. Texas (21-6, 14-2) closed within three points three times in the final 35 seconds, but Brooke McCarty s 3-pointer after a Baylor turnover bounced off the rim just before the final buzzer. McCarty finished with 16 points Monday night for Texas, which dropped its second straight loss after a 19-game win streak. Texas beat Baylor in Waco in overtime two weeks earlier, a win that had snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Lady Bears. Everybody wanted to say we were stale food and there s a new sheriff in town, Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. When you are a championship program, you go down fighting... They gutted it out. The comments by Mulkey, who has taken some pointed shots at rivals over her career, seemed to rankle Texas coach Karen Aston, who acknowledged the Big 12 title may be lost. McCarty finished with 16 points for Texas, which dropped special, Mitchell said. LONGTIME COMING: This was the first win for Ohio State over a team ranked No. 1 or No. 2 since the Buckeyes topped second-ranked Iowa on March 7, Brown s 35 points lead Baylor over Texas in key Big 12 win Baylor forward Nina Davis, left, and Texas forward Audrey- Ann Caron-Goudreau, right, battle for control of the ball during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game, Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, in Austin, Texas. I m well aware we ve got to talk about sheriffs and all kinds of crap. But I thought we played really hard and we just didn t win, said Aston, who spent a season as an assistant for Mulkey in I m over all that mess. There should be a lot of appreciation for the way these two teams play the game. BIG PICTURE Baylor: Baylor avoided its first regular-season sweep by a Big 12 opponent since the season and put itself in excellent position to earn at least a share of a seventh consecutive league championship. Jones health could be a problem if she s held out for a long time. She s had surgery on both knees and Mulkey said she ll be examined further Tuesday. Texas: The Longhorns will have to shake off letting this one get away. Over two games this season, Texas has only trailed the Lady Bears a total of four minutes but will need some help to win their first Big 12 title since Now Texas has to worry about holding on to a possible No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament. We need to not worry about (the Big 12) right now. It s not in our hands, Aston said. TEED UP Mulkey got a technical foul within the first minute. Fortunately for her, the game official who charged her with it walked away rather than give her a chance to get another that would have tossed her from the game.

5 samoa news, Tuesday, February 21, 2017 Page B5 Morris, Thomas lead Iowa St past Texas Tech, in OT LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) It was pointed out to Iowa State coach Steve Prohm that his team won at Kansas earlier this year. Still, he insisted, this overtime win against Texas Tech Monday was the best road win of the season. This is the best road win today, there s no question about it, Prohm said. We win next Friday, that will be the best road win. (Texas Tech) is tough, man. I told the guys, you can talk about the (Kansas) game when we re 40. Right now, we re trying to get as many road wins as we possibly can. Monte Morris had 23 points and Matt Thomas added 20 for the Cyclones, which were held without a field goal for the final four-plus minutes of overtime but capitalized on making seven of 10 free throws in the extra period. I knew we were up two and we were hoping they didn t take a three, Morris said of Texas Tech s final possession, in which it didn t get a shot off before the final buzzer. Worst case, it was going to double (overtime). Donovan (Jackson) did a great job of stopping the basketball. And they ran out of time. Good thing we were on the other end of it today. Naz Mitrou-Long added 16 points for Iowa State (18-9, 10-5 Big 12), but fouled out along with Deonte Burton. Both were unavailable in overtime. Texas Tech (17-11, 5-10) was led by 17 points from Niem Stevenson and 16 points apiece from Justin Gray and Zach Smith. Entering Monday, Texas Tech s last two losses at TCU and home against Kansas were each decided by one point. Red Raiders coach Chris Beard quickly interjected when a question was posted to Gray about what transpired on Texas Tech s last possession. I got it, Justin I saw a team that fights their asses off that s been in a lot of close games, Beard said. That represents their school well. Their town. Guys that go to class every day and do the right thing. And a coaching staff that believes in the players. And we find ourselves in another one possession game. Jackson hit two free throws to give Iowa State the lead, 79-78, for good with 1:55 left in overtime. Matt Thomas made two more foul shots and Morris added a third to make it with 17 seconds to go. Keenan Evans made a layup seven seconds later to pull Texas Tech within two and the Red Raiders fouled Nick Weiler-Babb, who missed both free throws, with 6.7 second remaining. Smith rebounded the second miss but Texas Tech didn t get off a shot; Devon Thomas hit a 3, but it came just after the buzzer. Just a lot of grit and toughness, Thomas said. (Mitrou- Long and Burton) fouled out at the end and different guys had to step up late in the game. Nick (Weiler-Babb) and Donovan (Jackson) both did that. Nick had a bunch of rebounds, Donovan had some big plays. Made his free throws. At the end of regulation, the Cyclones were called for an over-and-back while bringing the ball up court with the game tied 73-73, which gave the Red Raiders the ball with 1.3 seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Gray fired a turn-around jumper that hit the rim. After missing the first 50 games of last season for a second positive drug test, hard-throwing right hander Alex Reyes made up for lost time _ working his way back through Triple A before a dazzling lateseason audition (1.57 ERA in 46 innings) in the majors. While it s uncertain if Reyes will start the season in the rotation or bullpen, he s one of the favorites to win the Rookie of the Year award in the National League. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File) ST. LOUIS (AP) Rick Ankiel says he drank vodka before his first two starts in 2001 to quell anxiety after throwing five wild pitches in one inning during the previous season s playoffs. Ankiel detailed his experience during an interview with 590 The Fan on Monday. Ankiel had a promising rookie season as a 20-yearold with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2000, but he lost his control in the postseason. He pitched the first game of an NL Division Series against Atlanta and became the first major leaguer with five wild pitches in one inning. He said he was scared to death before his first start the next season against Randy Johnson and the Arizona Diamondbacks and turned to alcohol to suppress his nerves. I know I have no chance, he said. Feeling the pressure of all that, right before the game, I get a bottle of vodka. I just started drinking vodka. Lo and behold, it kind of tamed the monster, and I was able to do what I wanted. Ankiel pitched five innings and got the win against Arizona. I m sitting on the bench feeling crazy, I have to drink vodka to pitch through this, he added. It worked for that game. I had never drank before a game before. It was one of those things like the yips, the monster, the disease... it didn t fight fair, so I felt like I wasn t going to fight fair either. Ankiel drank again before his next start against Houston. This time, anxiety took over the alcohol, and he walked five, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. He said he didn t drink before games after that. Ankiel has co-written a book, The Phenomenon: Pressure, the Yips and the Pitch that Changed My Life, with Tim Brown, which is set for release April 18. The left-hander finished second in rookie of the year voting in 2000 before falling apart in the playoffs. After his lousy start against the Braves, he made two more appearances that postseason, walking five and throwing four more wild pitches over 1 1/3 innings. Ankiel never regained his form and made his final pitching appearance in He returned to the Cardinals in 2007 as an outfielder and played in the majors until I think the overall lesson from the book is about getting back up, Ankiel said. You re going to get knocked down... everyone gets knocked down.

7 samoa news, Tuesday, February 21, 2017 Page B7 Olympic organizers say winter sports set for boom in Asia SAPPORO, Japan (AP) Lee Hee-beom, the head of the Pyeongchang organizing committee, expects the 2018 Olympics to usher in a new era for winter sports in Asia. While the region has traditionally lagged behind North America and Europe in terms of winter sports competition, staging the next two Winter Olympics in Asia would significantly shift the balance, Lee said. With Pyongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022, winter sports will move from Europe and North American to Asia, said Lee who is attending the Asian Winter Games in Sapporo. We will have more sports fans among Asians because of Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing The Pyeongchang Games will mark the second time the Olympics have been staged in South Korea, which hosted the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul. Construction workers are putting the finishing touches on the 12 competition venues in Pyeongchang and Gangneung, including six new facilities that organizers say are about 96 percent complete on average. The athletes and media villages, an international broadcasting center, and a pentagonal stadium that will host the opening and closing ceremonies are expected to be finished by September. Lee said he didn t think a recent scandal at Olympic sponsor Samsung will impact the Games. A South Korean court has approved the arrest of a billionaire heir to Samsung accused of bribery and other charges in connection to a massive corruption scandal that engulfed the president and riveted the nation. Samsung has already committed to sponsoring the IOC and the Pyeongchang organizing committee, Lee said. Even with the recent scandal, I don t think (the Olympic sponsorship) will be affected, Lee added. We already have the agreements, and Samsung has already donated and has agreed to sponsor (the Olympics). So I don t think it will be affected. Questioned over a lack of infrastructure at the site of alpine skiing in Jeongseon, Lee said improvements were being made. Two new hotels are being constructed and the road to Jeongseon is being expanded from two lanes to four lanes, Lee said. By the Games time we will have some hotel rooms. The construction of venues is almost done so we will now focus on building roads, hotels, restaurants. Lee also said North Korea deserved to participate in Pyeongchang if they maintained the Olympic principles. Sports are separate from politics, Lee said. As I continually mention, we will keep the basic principle of IOC which says peace is one of the priorities. Those who like peace Former Derby, Preakness winner Charismatic dies LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Former Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Charismatic, whose bid for the Triple Crown ended with a dramatic leg injury as he neared the finish line in the Belmont Stakes, has died at a thoroughbred retirement farm in Kentucky. The striking chestnut horse that won the first two legs of the Triple Crown in 1999 was found dead in his stall Sunday at Old Friends farm near Georgetown, Kentucky, the farm said. Right now, everyone is pretty much inconsolable, Old Friends President Michael Blowen said Monday. He was a really tough horse and he deserved a much longer retirement... Everyone at Old Friends takes solace from the few great months that this great champion gave us. The stallion ate all his food Saturday and looked fine, Blowen said. He said Monday night that preliminary results from a necropsy indicate that Charismatic suffered a fractured pelvis, which caused the horse to hemorrhage. The farm said Charismatic was 21. Charismatic arrived at Old Friends last December after a long stud career in Japan. He quickly became a favorite among the farm s visitors in central Kentucky. He connected with people that would come here and tell us stories about what that horse meant to them when he won the Kentucky Derby, and then when he broke his leg in the Belmont, Blowen said. He was just a touchstone for people s own personal history with horse racing that very few horses could match. should participate and can participate and North Korea is no exception, they still can participate if they maintain the Olympic spirit. Relations between the two Koreas have worsened since North Korea conducted two nuclear tests and a string of rocket launches last year as it continues to expand its nuclear weapons and missile programs. North Korea is taking part in the ongoing Asian Winter Games which Lee cited as a promising sign. On NHL players taking part in Pyeongchang, Lee said he met recently with league officials in New York and said he expected the players to be in South Korea. Birthday Baby: You are gentle, caring and perceptive. You are soulful and accommodating. Dear Abby by Abigail Van Buren WIFE WHOSE HUSBAND FIGHTS DIRTY MAY NEED A CLEAN BREAK DEAR ABBY: Because I had a promiscuous past prior to getting married, it was understandable that my husband and I have gone through some rough patches. It s been three years since our wedding, and he still can t let it go sometimes. A recent argument just escalated into his calling me a whore and stupid. We have a beautiful little girl together, so it s not like I can just up and go whenever I want. When is enough, enough? Where is the point that I can give in to the thought that I can t do it anymore? Or is this just what marriage is? We have already done counseling, and it just made it worse. I feel really alone, so can you please give me some feedback? -- ROUGH PATCH DEAR ROUGH PATCH: If your husband knew about your promiscuous past when he married you, he has no right to throw it at you when he s angry. That s fighting dirty, and it never resolves the issue at hand. You are neither a whore nor stupid, and this is NOT what marriage is supposed to be. Good husbands build their partner s self-esteem; they don t undercut it the way yours is doing, because it is abusive. Since the counseling you had didn t work, you must now decide whether you need to try again with a different therapist or talk to a lawyer. If I were living like this, I know what I would do, but the only person who can decide what s best for you and your daughter is you. DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been friends with a bachelor for 30 years. Over the past year we have had a problem with him that is seriously straining our friendship. When he uses the bathroom in our home, he leaves a terrible mess. There s urine all over the toilet and a large puddle on the bathroom floor. The last time he was here, it was obvious he had stepped in it and tracked it around as he left the room! I m extremely upset and angry. In addition, it s obvious he doesn t wash his hands, as the sink and soap are bone-dry. I don t want him to come over anymore. My husband wants me to be more forgiving. We re both too embarrassed to say anything to him. Should we stop being his friend, or have a frank talk? He is oblivious and continues to contact us and wants to visit. We either put him off or try to arrange to meet him elsewhere. It is becoming unbearable. -- DISGUSTED IN LOUISIANA DEAR DISGUSTED: It would be a shame to throw away a 30-year friendship without trying to save it. Could there be a physical problem that has caused this change in your longtime friend -- a bladder problem, or one with his eyesight? You are all adults, and longtime friends should be able to speak frankly with each other. Because your husband is closer to him than you are, he s the one who needs to talk to him man to man and point out the fact that there is a problem and then ask what might be wrong.
