Just like old times. Dwyane Wade has decided to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers and reunite with LeBron James, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press on Tuesday night. Wade is expected to clear waivers on Wednesday and then join the Cavs, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal cannot be completed until the 12-time All-Star goes through the waiver process. In Cleveland, Wade will be reunited with James, his close friend, former Miami teammate and a player he confided in before signing with his hometown Chicago Bulls last year. Wade and James won two NBA titles together during four seasons with the Heat and will now chase another one with the Cavs, who have been revamped after losing to Golden State in last season s Finals. On Monday, James said he would love to play with Wade again. He brings another championship pedigree, championship DNA, James said at Cleveland s media day. He brings another player to the team who can get guys involved, can make plays and also has a great basketball mind.... I hope we can bring him here. I would love to have him. Once Wade completes the waiver formality, he ll be the latest high-profile player to join the Cavs, who traded for All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas, signed former league MVP Derrick Rose and added two strong wing defenders in Jae Crowder and Jeff Green, who could help them defend the Warriors if those teams get back to a fourth straight Finals matchup. Thomas isn t expected to play until January because of a hip injury, but until he returns the Cavs have plenty of firepower in James, Wade, Rose and All-Star Kevin Love, who could thrive as Cleveland s No. 2 scoring threat now that Kyrie Irving is in Boston. Wade agreed to a contract buyout earlier this week with the Bulls, who signed him before last season as a free agent. He ll get a veteran s minimum contract worth $2.3 million with Cleveland, which now has a surplus of shooting guards with Wade, J.R. Smith and Kyle Korver and Iman Shumpert on the roster. Cavs coach Tyronn Lue has depth and decisions to make. There s a challenge every year when you add new guys and add all the guys we added, Lue said. Four or five new guys, it s always tough and challenging. Anytime you get new pieces and new players it s always challenging, but I m up for the challenge and so are the players. We will figure it out. It will be a good year for us. The Cavaliers emerged Tuesday as front-runners over the Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder to land the 35-yearold Wade, who many feel has plenty of game left. NFL opts not to react to Trump s anthem kneel rule tweet WASHINGTON (AP) No matter what challenges his administration faces, President Donald Trump is keeping up his running commentary on the NFL tweeting Tuesday about the football league s TV ratings and suggesting it bar players from kneeling during the national anthem. The NFL, for its part, was not all that eager to continue the back-and-forth with Trump. He s exercising his freedom to speak, league spokesman Joe Lockhart said on a conference call with reporters, and I m exercising my freedom not to react. Asked about the possibility of the NFL punishing players or league employees for actions during the pregame anthems, Lockhart said: I will leave the hypotheticals and the speculation to others. I m not going to go down that road. Trump brought up the topic for the fifth day in a row, dating to a speech to a crowd of supporters in Alabama on Friday night, when he referred to an NFL player making a gesture during The Star-Spangled Banner as a son of a bitch. In response, more than 200 players knelt or sat on a bench or took other actions during the anthems at games Sunday. On Monday night, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones a staunch supporter of Trump and his players knelt, armin-arm, before the anthem, then rose for the playing of the song ahead of the team s victory at the Arizona Cardinals. Some spectators at Arizona s stadium booed while the Cowboys knelt, which Trump tweeted was the loudest I have ever heard. Among his other tweets Tuesday: The NFL has all sorts of rules and regulations. The only way out for them is to set a rule that you can t kneel during our National Anthem! And this : Ratings for NFL football are way down except before game starts, when people tune in to see whether or not our country will be disrespected! The ratings for Monday s Cowboys-Cardinals game were up 63 percent from the equivalent game a year ago, which went up against a presidential debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton. The ratings for Week 3 of the NFL season were 3 percent higher than the same week last season. But viewership for national telecasts of NFL games is down 11 percent this season compared with 2016 through three weeks, according to the Nielsen company. That figure does not include Monday s game. Still, five of the 10 shows with the largest prime-time viewership numbers last week were NFL-related telecasts. At a White House news conference Tuesday, Trump was asked whether he s spent too much time thinking about the NFL instead of dealing with the crisis in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico. Well, I wasn t preoccupied with the NFL.... I don t think you can disrespect our country, our flag, our national anthem. To me, the NFL situation is a very important situation, Trump responded. I ve heard that before about was I preoccupied. Not at all. Not at all. I have plenty of time on my hands. All I do is work. He went on to call kneeling during the anthem disgraceful. Attorney General Jeff Sessions weighed in, too, condemning NFL players who exercised their freedom of expression by kneeling silently during the anthem. These players, with all the assets they have, can express their political views without in effect denigrating the symbols of our nation, a nation that has provided our freedom to speak, Sessions said during an appearance at Georgetown University s law school. Tennessee Titans wide receiver Rishard Matthews, whose father is a retired Marine master sergeant and whose halfbrother died in Afghanistan as a defense contractor, said Tuesday on ESPN s NFL Live that he will kneel until Trump apologizes. He was calling a lot of us, and I feel that he was calling myself, an S.O.B., and that s not OK and very disrespectful, Matthews said. So I plan to kneel until the president apologizes. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the anthem in the preseason a year ago to make a statement about social inequality and police treatment of blacks in the United States. Kaepernick currently does not have a job in the NFL; six players engaged in some form of protest during the anthem at games the week before Trump brought up the matter.

Tafuna defeated Samoana [photo: TG] Column: A lot of nervous people wait for other shoe to drop The seamy underbelly of college basketball has always existed, despite the halfhearted and mostly futile efforts by the NCAA to make sure everybody plays fair. Now that it s finally been penetrated by real lawmen, the only question is how many people the FBI ends up taking down. The number stood at 10 Tuesday after federal prosecutors moved to arrest, among others, a top Adidas executive, and assistant basketball coaches from Arizona, Auburn, the University of Southern California and Oklahoma State. They re charged in a bribery scheme to steer future NBA players toward selected sports agents and financial advisers. But with mentions of people associated with the University of Louisville and University of Miami caught on wiretaps scheming to pay players as much as $150,000 to come to their schools, there figures to be a lot of nervous people in college basketball waiting for the other, er, shoe to drop. Make no mistake about it. These aren t bumbling NCAA inspectors leading the investigation into shady agents, shoe companies and unscrupulous coaches. These are FBI agents and U.S. attorneys with great powers of both subpoena and persuasion. Their investigation is not done and anyone leaning on the fence about whether to cooperate will have to balance their loyalty to programs with the very real fact they might go to prison if they don t fess up. And fess up they will. A day of reckoning may be coming for some big programs, and some big name coaches. If the allegations are true and there seem to be a lot of wiretaps supporting them it also could mean the end of Rick Pitino s coaching career and possibly the end of the University of Louisville s powerhouse basketball program. Yes, it looks as if Pitino is in trouble again, just months after the NCAA ordered the school to vacate its 2013 national title because strippers danced and performed sex acts for recruits and players. Pitino was also suspended for five conference games and the school s basketball program put on four years probation, actions he claimed were unjust because he said he knew nothing about what was going on. Defiant then, he may not be so defiant now. You can only blame rogue assistant coaches for so long. Louisville is the school named in the complaint as University 6, where the family of a top basketball recruit was allegedly promised $100,000 in late May or early June if he signed with the school. The FBI said it recorded a meeting in July where an assistant coach at Louisville was briefed on a plan to funnel thousands of dollars to the recruit s family, and the participants in the meeting noted they had to be careful because Louisville was already on probation. According to the complaint filed in the Southern District of New York, the money was to be funneled through Adidas, whose director of basketball marketing was charged in the filing. [photo: TG] Bryce Love s yards against UCLA put him in Pac-12 lead Bryce Love was essentially Christian McCaffrey s understudy the last two seasons, and he clearly learned well. Love racked up 263 yards in a Stanford victory over UCLA last weekend. He averaged 8.8 yards per carry and had the second-most yards in a single game in school history, behind McCaffrey s 284 against California on Nov. 19. Love s highlight was a 69-yard touchdown dash in the fourth quarter. The junior from North Carolina became the first player in 20 years with a 50-yard-plus run in six straight games, according to the school. It was also Love s sixth straight game with more than 100 yards rushing. He s the first Stanford running back with at least 100 yards rushing in each of his first six career starts. McCaffrey, of course, broke Barry Sanders NCAA record of 3,250 all-purpose yards, finishing with 3,864 as a sophomore at Stanford in He led the Pac-12 in rushing with 1,603 yards last season before declaring himself eligible for the NFL draft. He was the eighth overall pick by the Carolina Panthers. Love said Tuesday that he picked up a lot of lot of things from McCaffrey, including his competitive spirit.
