The 35th America s Cup match will be another showdown between Oracle Team USA and Emirates Team New Zealand, a rematch of the epic 2013 regatta that was decided by one of the greatest comebacks and collapses in sports. Emirates Team New Zealand earned its spot in the finals of sailing s marquee regatta when it sped away from Sweden s Artemis Racing on Bermuda s Great Sound on Monday to clinch the challenger finals at 5-2. It s almost as if it were preordained that the scrappy Kiwis, now led by unflappable 26-year-old helmsman Peter Burling, would once again face the powerhouse U.S. squad owned by Silicon Valley maverick Larry Ellison, skippered by nails-tough Australian Jimmy Spithill and featuring few Americans on the race crew. The match starts Saturday with Races 1 and 2. Oracle Team USA needs to win seven races to keep the oldest trophy in international sports. Because Oracle won a bonus point by winning the qualifiers, Team New Zealand must win eight races. In 2013, Oracle Team USA started at minus-2 after being penalized in the biggest cheating scandal in America s Cup history. It still won. Emirates Team New Zealand reached match point at 8-1 on San Francisco Bay. It had a big lead in what could have been the clinching race, but the breeze died and the time limit expired. Later that day, Oracle Team USA began an eight-race winning streak that allowed it to retain the Auld Mug. On Monday in the challenger finals, a first attempt at Race 7 was abandoned at the 25-minute time limit with the boats crawling in barely a knot of wind. In freshening breeze a few hours later, the Kiwis dominated. They finally won a start against Artemis skipper Nathan Outteridge. Their 50-foot catamaran rose up on hydrofoils and showed its incredible speed in a 56-second, wire-to-wire victory. There were subdued celebrations aboard the Kiwi cat until a magnum of champagne arrived. Grinder-trimmer Blair Tuke, who teamed with Burling to win Olympic gold and silver medals, popped the cork and sprayed his mates. Their focus has to shift immediately to trying to atone for the mind-blowing loss in That s why we came to Bermuda, that s what we re here to do is bring that Cup back home USA in America s Cup to New Zealand, said Burling, who replaced the fired Dean Barker after the 2013 collapse. We feel like we ve had an incredibly tough road to get here. We ve gone through a lot of adversity with the things like the capsize and some tough races here and there. But one thing about this team is they ve dug super deep to get us to this point, keep making the boat go faster while fixing the things that we ve broken. The Kiwis capsized last Tuesday, throwing three sailors into the water and extensively damaging their catamaran. They came back two days later and clinched their semifinal against Britain. Oracle Team USA beat Team New Zealand twice in the round-robins. Artemis, led by Olympic gold medalists Outteridge of Australia and Iain Percy of Britain, looked good in practice races earlier this spring but didn t find its stride until late in the trials. It rebounded from a 3-1 deficit to win four straight races against SoftBankTeam Japan to win its challenger semifinal, but too many unforced errors cost it against the Kiwis. Among them was Outteridge falling overboard in Race 3 on Saturday. (AP) The Minnesota Twins selected California high school shortstop Royce Lewis with the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft Monday night. It was the third time the Twins led off the draft, and first since they took hometown high school catcher Joe Mauer in The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Lewis hit.377 with four homers and 25 stolen bases for JSerra Catholic High School, establishing himself as a top prospect with excellent speed and a solid bat. He played both shortstop and outfield in high school, but the Twins classified him as a shortstop when Commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement at MLB Network studios. My body just went numb, Lewis said during an interview with MLB Network. It was an unbelievable feeling. Lewis was a standout on USA Baseball s gold medalwinning Under-18 team at the Pan American Championships last year. He was also selected as this year s National High School Coaches Association s high school senior baseball athlete of the year. With the second pick, Cincinnati took California high school right-hander Hunter Greene, one of the top two-way talents in a draft full of them. Greene, chosen as a pitcher, also played shortstop at Notre Dame High School, but his upper-90s (mph) fastball that can hit triple digits has the Reds projecting him as a future ace. He was 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA and 43 strikeouts and only four walks in 28 innings this season. Greene also batted.324 with six homers and 28 RBIs. Greene, the first of four players in attendance at the draft site to be selected, was asked to give a scouting report on himself as a pitcher. Man, I m a monster, Greene said, chuckling. I m different on the field than I am off the field. I m just going to go out there and compete and challenge and pound the zone and go after guys like I know I can and like everybody else knows I can. At No. 3, San Diego selected North Carolina high school lefthander MacKenzie Gore. With his big leg kick, Gore throws a fastball that sits in the low- to mid-90s to go along with a knee-buckling curve. He also has a hard slider and solid changeup in his arsenal. Louisville two-way star Brendan McKay was drafted fourth overall by Tampa Bay as a first baseman. McKay had teams considering whether they should draft him as a pitcher, hitter or both. The Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year is hitting.343 with 17 homers and 56 RBIs for the College World Series-bound Cardinals. He s also 10-3 with 2.34 ERA and 140 strikeouts and just 33 walks in 104 innings on the mound. Atlanta selected Vanderbilt right-hander Kyle Wright with the No. 5 pick, potentially adding to a large stable of touted arms in the Braves farm system. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Wright, who grew up a Braves fan, went 5-6 with a 3.40 ERA, 121 strikeouts and 31 walks in 103 1/3 innings pitched. With his mid-90s fastball, knee-buckling curve and physical size, Wright is considered a potential front-end starter. Good Morning! (AP Photo/Eduardo Verdugo) Arena rebuilds US confidence after Klinsmann MEXICO CITY (AP) Bruce Arena has managed the tricky task of establishing a sense of calm along with urgency within the U.S. soccer team. It s quite a contrast to the frustration and futility at the end of Jurgen Klinsmann s coaching reign last November. Of course, climbing from last to third in the final round of World Cup qualifying has eased pressure immensely. We haven t lost yet this year since Bruce has had the team, U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati said Tuesday, a day after a 1-1 draw with Mexico at Azteca Stadium. So whatever has gotten us there, whatever occasion or bonding that s led to a change, that s a positive, and certainly Bruce has to receive a lot of credit. Now 65, Arena is a member of the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame. He coached the national team from , leading the Americans to the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals in their best result since the first tournament in Klinsmann was fired after a 2-1 home loss to Mexico and a 4-0 fiasco at Costa Rica. The rebound in qualifying under the witty and sarcastic Arena began with a 6-0 home win over Honduras and a 1-1 tie at Panama. It continued with a 2-0 home victory over Trinidad and Tobago last Thursday in Colorado and the draw against El Tri just the third point the Americans have gained at Azteca. I m not going to compare the current situation to any previous situations. I don t think that is appropriate. But I think that clearly the team has responded to some of the things that Bruce has outlined and is doing, and that s what we were hoping for, Gulati said. I think it s probably a lot of little things and not any one thing. Obviously when you re on the field and in camp and the team starts to believe even before they ve played a game that they re capable of playing better and of winning, that helps. And then when you go out and see results that come from that, from following the path he s laid out, that obviously gives people a lot of confidence not only in Bruce but in themselves and in the team. On the sidewalk outside Estadio Nacional in San Jose, Costa Rica, last fall, U.S. captain Michael Bradley said self-examination and urgency was needed. Speaking in Azteca s tunnel on Monday night, Bradley diagnosed what had gone wrong. It was just a case at the end of last year where a few too many areas started to drop, and I think Bruce has done a very good job of coming in and just little by little working at getting every just raising the level across the board, he said. And obviously a big part of it is this idea of team, of spirit, of mentality, of (guts) and understanding that we have good players, we have a good team, but we re not good enough to just step on the field and think that things are going to take care of themselves. Arena s biggest personnel changes were to add left back Jorge Villafana, who was overlooked by Klinsmann, and to bring back midfielder Darlington Nagbe, dropped by Klinsmann in a spat for refusing an invitation to a training camp ahead of exhibition games last October. Arena used 20 of the 26 players on his roster in the last two qualifiers, changing seven starters because of the 7,820-foot altitude and the short recovery time. Arena shifted from a formation against Trinidad to a five-man back line against Mexico, a tactic he settled on in the winter, and had players practice daily once the most recent training camp opened May 29. He wouldn t try to explain how he created confidence. I haven t spent a whole lot of time examining what happened in the past. And in a lot of ways, that s not my business, Arena said. I m just doing things the way I do things. I can t comment on the things that went on in the past, but I could say that the players have responded very well, and we re really becoming a team. Mexico leads the final round of the North and Central American and Caribbean region with 14 points, followed by Costa Rica and the U.S. (eight each), Panama (six), Honduras (four) and Trinidad and Tobago (three). The top three advance to next year s World Cup in Russia, and the fourth-place team faces Asia s No. 5 nation in a playoff. (Photos: Blue)

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Astros placed righthander Lance McCullers on the 10-day disabled list with a back problem on Monday, another blow to a rotation decimated by injuries. His stint on the DL with discomfort in his lower back is retroactive to June 9. General manager Jeff Luhnow said the team doesn t expect it to lead to a long absence for McCullers but didn t specify a specific timetable for his return. It s something that was going to keep him from making his start (Tuesday), manager A.J. Hinch said. So then we decided to put him on the DL and give him complete rest and hope that he comes back at the end of those 10 days. McCullers joins ace Dallas Keuchel and right-hander Charlie Morton on the 10-day disabled list. Houston has also been without starter Collin McHugh, who is on the 60-day disabled list, all season. There was some good news for the first-place Astros on Monday with right-hander Joe Musgrove coming off the disabled list to start against the Texas Rangers. McCullers is 6-1 with a 2.58 ERA in 13 starts this season, providing a potent 1-2 punch with Keuchel at the front end of the rotation as the Astros raced out to a double-digit lead in the AL West. The injury to McCullers forced Houston to shuffle its lineup. Brad Peacock will pitch in his spot on Tuesday against the Rangers on three days rest. The Astros decided Peacock was the best option to slide into that spot even though he left his last start after struggling early. Hinch said he would normally be reticent to have a pitcher make two starts so close together, but several factors made Peacock the best option in this situation. With Peacock it s a little bit different, Hinch said. He s got some experience as a reliever. He also came out of the game after three innings and pitches in the 70s the other day. So of the time to send a guy out after three days, this is probably the best-case scenario. The Astros will put top prospect Francis Martes into the rotation to make his first major league start on Wednesday. Martes allowed four hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings of relief on Friday in his major league debut. While dealing with the mounting injuries to his pitching staff has certainly been challenging for Hinch, he and the Astros aren t feeling sorry for themselves. We can make it work, Hinch said. I think everybody wants the frustrating quote or the woe is me or the sky is falling. The reality is we ve got a really good team and we re going to have to absorb this or else. So I think our guys understand exactly what s going on. There s no more pressure on us. There s no more anxiety on us... we re tough enough to deal with it. Florida Panthers new coach Bob Boughner shares a laugh with Panthers President & CEO Matthew Caldwell Monday, June 12, 2017, in Sunrise, Fla. The Florida Panthers went into this offseason with a very specific plan regarding what they thought they wanted for the team s next head coach. Then they met with Bob Boughner. And their plan changed on the spot. Boughner was introduced Monday as the Panthers 15th coach in 24 years and the fifth to hold the job since It s the first time Boughner has gotten the reins of an NHL team, and he comes to Florida after spending the last two years as an assistant coach under former Panthers coach Peter DeBoer in San Jose. I think we have a lot of great pieces here to build something special in South Florida, Boughner said. General manager Dale Tallon said Boughner sees the game in a modern way and is the right leader to get the Panthers back toward competing for the Stanley Cup. Tallon said the Panthers quickly decided after interviewing Boughner that he was the pick, and went forward with the rest of their lengthy search anyway no one knowing those subsequent talks were in vain. Of all the interviews and of all the people, Bob Boughner impressed us like no one else, Tallon said. All the years I ve been in the business interviewing coaches, firing coaches, meeting coaches, Bob was the most prepared. His performance, his preparation, his passion knocked us out of the park. It really did. It was incredible to see. Added Panthers President Matthew Caldwell: He blew us away. He s the right fit for us. DeBoer said the Sharks hated to see Boughner leave. This is a terrific opportunity for Bob to become a head coach in the National Hockey League and one that he deserves, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. Boughner is the fifth coach to be hired since the regular season ended, a list that includes the Vegas Golden Knights choosing Gerard Gallant as their first coach. Gallant was fired by the Panthers early this past season, getting replaced by then-general manager Tom Rowe. But Florida never found the same form it had a year ago on the way to the Atlantic Division title, and missed the playoffs by 14 points. That led to the Panthers going back to what has worked in the past: Tallon squarely in charge again as general manager, and his first major move of the offseason is bringing in (Continued on page B6)

5 samoa news, Tuesday, June 13, 2017 Page B5 Steve Stricker answers questions after a practice round for the U.S. Open golf tournament Monday, June 12, 2017, at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis. (AP Photo/Morry Gash) Stricker proud of his Wisconsin grit to get into US Open ERIN, Wis. (AP) Steve Stricker was missing a critical piece of equipment when he finished a practice round for the U.S. Open. He walked under a tunnel off the ninth green at Erin Hills and saw a line of fans on both sides of the rope, bending to the left for another 100 yards or more. He grasped at both back pockets and realized he didn t have a pen. Not to worry. He had plenty of friends to bail him out. Stricker saw them on every hole during nine holes of practice. He heard them, too, with applause greeting him at every green. It s cool, Stricker said Monday. It s special. One of the reasons I wanted to play here is I knew it would be fun to play in front of your home crowd. I don t get this on a weekly basis. It s fun to be part of it. It s our first U.S. Open in the state. I don t know how many more I have in front of me, so I m glad I made it. This was the big one, and Stricker never felt more proud to be playing. He is the most prolific PGA Tour winner from Wisconsin. Andy North won a pair of U.S. Opens during a career slowed by injuries. Stricker has won 12 times on the PGA Tour, was a regular on Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams for seven straight years and is such a popular figure in golf that he was appointed Presidents Cup captain for this year. None of that got him into the U.S. Open an hour from where he lives. He had to earn that. The USGA declined his request for a special exemption. His world ranking was too low because of his part-time schedule. So the 50-year-old headed to the U.S. Open qualifier in Tennessee and shot to win it. That made a U.S. Open in his home state even better. As it turns out, it s the way it probably should have been, he said. They decline, and I get in on my own merit. That s what makes me feel good. I feel like I belong here. I wasn t given anything. I earned my way in. In so many ways, it feels like the perfect ending to a PGA Tour career no matter how he fares. Stricker s wife, Nicki, used to caddie for him when he first turned pro. His first big chance at winning a major was the 1998 PGA Championship at Sahalee. Nicki was home in Wisconsin about to give birth to their first child, Bobbi Maria, who was born two weeks after his runnerup finish. Nicki is caddying for him this week at Erin Hills. Bobbi Maria, who just finished her freshman year at Wisconsin, is playing in her first Women s State Open this week. Their second daughter, Izzy, is playing a match this week at their home club. It s a big week of golf for the Stricker clan. It s definitely an exciting time, Nicki Stricker said. She was working as a lifeguard at a country club when Stricker went to see Wisconsin golf coach Dennis Tiziani for help with his game. Stricker recalls seeing the lifeguard and blurting out, Whoa, who s that girl? That s my daughter, Tiziani replied. They have been married 23 years, and the golf heritage runs deep. Nicki s brother, Mario Tiziani, played a full PGA Tour season a decade ago and competed in two U.S. Opens (in 2000 and 2002, both won by Tiger Woods). He now is Stricker s manager. It s a family affair, always has been, and it s particularly meaningful for the first U.S. Open in Wisconsin. Stricker, who reduced his playing schedule the last few years to spend more time at home, remains among the most popular figures in golf. The only time he gets uncomfortable is trying to explain why people like him so much. I ve been fortunate to have had a lot of nice things said about me in the press. Or maybe I ve got people snowed, I don t know, Stricker said. I was brought up in a small town (Edgerton), and you have to watch what you did all the time because everybody knew your business. But this story, and maybe the reason it s a little bigger than normal for me, is because I was declined the invite and then I got in on my own. I think that s Wisconsin people in general, he said. It s that blue-collar Wisconsin mentality that people work hard here. And that s what I had to do to get in. (Photos: Blue)

Boughner s only previous experience as a head coach came in the Ontario Hockey League with the Windsor Spitfires, over two stints spanning eight seasons. He led Windsor to a pair of Memorial Cups and he was twice selected as the OHL s coach of the year. He also spent the season as an NHL assistant in Columbus. He now takes over a team with a young core led by one of Windsor s favorite natives Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad, a 21-year-old who has already been an All-Star and is by a grand jury last August, the panel alleging he had engaged in sexual battery with an 18-year-old female who was incapacitated because of use of drugs or alcohol. But Lewis attorneys disputed that charge, saying the sex with the woman was consensual and she was fully conscious. Lewis, of Apopka, Florida, was dismissed from the football team after his arrest and soon after left the university. Panthers New Coach Continued from page B4 one of the biggest keys for Florida s hopes over the next few seasons. Ekblad has been close to Boughner for years, usually calling him Bougs or Boogie. I m probably going to have to start calling him something maybe a little more formal now, Ekblad said. Boughner s hiring follows a formula that the Panthers have used quite often in recent years: Bring in a coach who has never been in charge of an NHL team. Of the Panthers last six coaches, five DeBoer, Kevin Dineen, Peter Horachek, Rowe and now Boughner were not previously NHL coaches before getting the chance in Florida. For now, Boughner is one of only two true first-time coaches in the NHL. Vancouver s Travis Green was hired in April, and he s never before coached in any league higher than the AHL. I know this league and I know the game, Boughner said. And I m ready for this challenge. Good Morning! You know it s a good morning when you wake up with everything you need. He also took a look at how the roof of a hockey arena in Russia during the 2014 Winter Olympics was lit up with cool displays. Just three months before Kid Rock becomes the first star to perform in the centerpiece of a 50-block development, Wilson touted the facility that the Detroit Red Wings and Pistons will share next season. The arena is part of an active construction zone in an $800-plus million project. Much of the arena is draped with an aluminum shell that will become a big screen to show projected videos and images to create the same effect people saw three years ago during the Sochi Games. Bigger than anything you ll see in Times Square, Disney or Vegas, Wilson told reporters Monday during a guided tour. He spoke under a translucent plastic roof on an elevated concourse inspired by the High Line in New York. This building is going to be a piece of art, Wilson gushed. I think this is going to blow people away. Capacity for hockey games will be about 20,000, with almost half of those seats in the lower level. About 21,000 fans can watch hoops in the heart of the Motor City. Even those without one of the best seats in the house will have a clear view of what Wilson said will be the largest scoreboard in the NHL with videoboards that will be the same size along the sideboards and behind the nets. There are seating sections that seem suspended from the ceiling, looming over steeply pitched sections below them. That idea was born after a scouting trip to Madison Square Garden in New York. On another day, he took note of how intimate the Bell Centre appeared to be for the Montreal Canadiens. It should be the tightest bowl, Wilson said. The whole emphasis is about getting close. It should sound good, too. Oher Äôs future in Carolina remains cloudy as the Panthers prepare for their mandatory three-day minicamp beginning Tuesday, June 13, (AP Photo/Chuck Burton, File) Oher s future with Panthers uncertain entering minicamp CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Michael Oher s future in Carolina remains uncertain as the Panthers prepare for a mandatory three-day minicamp beginning Tuesday. The team s starting left tackle during its Super Bowl season in 2015 has not had any contact with the Panthers in more than a month, making it unclear if he will attend the camp. Attempts to reach Oher the subject of the popular movie The Blind Side were unsuccessful and his agent Drew Rosenhaus declined comment on his client s situation. Oher s whereabouts is just one of several story lines entering minicamp. Quarterback Cam Newton is expected to begin throwing this week, rookie running back and first-round draft pick Christian McCaffrey will rejoin the team on Wednesday, and free agent pickup Julius Peppers could be back on the field after the team rested the 37-year-old free agent for most of OTAs. But Oher s situation is clearly the most compelling. His status with the team has been a rollercoaster ride since he suffered a head injury last September and was placed in the league s concussion protocol. He hasn t played since, missing the last 13 games in 2016 and remains in the protocol eight months later. General manager Dave Gettleman flew to Nashville, Tennessee, to meet with Oher over lunch on May 5. Oher followed up with Gettleman for a few days, but the team said Oher has not communicated with Carolina s front office since. On Thursday night a cryptic message was posted on Oher s Instagram account with a picture of 10 prescription pill bottles along with the words all for the brain smh (shaking my head). The post was quickly deleted from Instagram. The Panthers responded by saying they re unsure if Oher posted the photo and message since they ve not been in contact with him, but Gettleman reiterated that Oher s health and safety is the team s top priority. The 31-year-old Oher, who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens earlier in his career, is also dealing with accusations that he assaulted an Uber driver over a disagreement of a fare. He has a trial date set for July 7 in Nashville. Gettleman said through the team that our No. 1 priority is a healthy Michael Oher. This is not about football, this is about Michael. Still, it appears the Panthers are preparing to move on from Oher. They signed free agent left tackle Matt Kalil to a five-year, $55 million contract this offseason that included $24 million in guaranteed money with the plan being to move Oher to right tackle. However, since then the Panthers drafted secondround pick Taylor Moton from Western Michigan to compete for the starting right tackle spot with former third-round draft pick Daryl Williams. Oher has been unavailable for comment and his agent Drew Rosenhaus had no comment on his client s situation. Oher has two years remaining on a three-year, $21.6 million contract extension he signed shortly after the Super Bowl, so it s hard to imagine him simply walking away. This season Oher is set to make $4.5 million, including a $2 million bonus if he makes the roster and another $250,000 workout bonus. The Panthers potentially could save millions under the NFL salary cap if they reach an injury settlement with Oher.

Vick also received an embrace from Blank s team that he said would last a lifetime. Vick, the dynamic quarterback whose career with the Atlanta Falcons ended in disgrace, and Roddy White, the leading receiver in franchise history, were honored with a retirement ceremony Monday. I m here today as a retired Atlanta Falcon, and I can live with that forever and will forever be grateful. Thank you, Vick said. Vick, who thrilled fans with his dual-threat skills as a passer and runner, and White, the physical and productive receiver, were two of the biggest stars and most dynamic players in Falcons history. For Vick, the warm embrace from the Falcons was not automatic. After leading the Falcons to two playoff appearances and one NFC championship game appearance in his six years in Atlanta, Vick was sent to prison in 2007 for running a dogfighting operation. The revelation of the abuse of dogs on Vick s property angered fans in Atlanta and around the nation. He returned after missing two seasons to play five years for the Eagles and had backup stints with the Jets and Steelers. Vick did not play last season, but expressed his wish to retire with the Falcons. Blank spoke about his belief in second chances as he granted that wish. Life is really all about learning from your mistakes, redemption, learning to be a better person, moving on and making a difference in the lives of other people, Blank said. There are many people I know in life who have done that and I would say none more than Michael Vick. Blank said Vick and White would certainly be considered for the team s Ring of Honor. For now, Vick said it meant more to simply have a retirement day with the Falcons. I just appreciate the fact nobody ever changed toward me, Vick said of his relationship with Blank and the team following his prison sentence. I wasn t perceived any different. Vick said that about three days after leaving the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, Mr. Blank and his family came with food from my favorite restaurant. Said Blank: I knew what Michael liked. Some were not as quick to forgive Vick s crime, but he remained popular with a large segment of Falcons fans. His No. 7 jersey remained popular at the Georgia Dome, where in his six seasons he was a big reason sellouts became routine. Vick was the first quarterback to run for 1,000 yards in a season. He holds the record for most yards rushing in a career (6,109) by a quarterback. C Y C Y M K M K

The experience you gain this year will be remarkable and will encourage you to get involved in a project that makes you think about life and what you can do to make the world a better place. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Don t fret over little annoyances. Keep busy working toward a common goal with someone you have emotional differences with. Overreacting or making an assumption will lead to trouble. You ll be judged if you are critical. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Short trips, attending a lecture or setting up an interview are all favored. Make personal changes that will encourage you to do more and complain less. Showing compassion to others will put you in a good position. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Look at what you can afford before you spend on personal items or try to buy someone s love. You are better off investing your cash in ways that will allow you to better plan for retirement. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Love and work won t mix. Be careful when dealing with conflicting interests. Avoid making personal or physical changes because someone else wants you to. Act on your own behalf and let past experience guide you. A creative endeavor looks promising if you are realistic about how you move forward. Your ability to appeal to people of all ages will help you gain approval that can lead to exciting new opportunities. You will avoid problems by being fastidious about the details. Dear Abby by Abigail Van Buren EARLY PLAYTIME LEAVES RETIRED NEIGHBOR TOSSING AND TURNING DEAR ABBY: We have owned our house for 31 years and raised our kids here. They are grown now and have moved out. Several families across the street have come and gone. The most recent owners have two kids, one in kindergarten and another in first grade. Every morning before school, the mom lets her kids run wild, screaming, yelling, riding their bikes and scooters unsupervised in the street from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. My husband is retired and hears this every morning. He has a back injury and two hip replacements, so he doesn t sleep well and isn t an early riser. Today he finally went over and asked her not to let them do this every morning. She, of course, became defensive and said she likes to let them play before school and thought 8 a.m. wasn t unreasonable. Not only are the kids loud, but cars often race up the road and it s dangerous. We were always out there watching our kids on this road, especially when they were that age. Are we a couple of old fogies, or do you agree she is an irresponsible parent? -- UPSET IN WASHINGTON DEAR UPSET: Playtime at 8 a.m. may not seem unreasonable, but it is to someone who has health and sleep problems. However, your neighbor has a right to let her children out to play before school. I wouldn t call you a couple of old fogies, but I would point out that after people reach a certain age, their needs can change. Try earplugs or double-paned bedroom windows. But if that doesn t help, it may be time to consider moving to a community for people over 55. ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been married for five years. He s always been a jokester, which is OK, except for the way he does it. He knows what pushes my buttons, so his jokes are geared toward that. At first, I ignore it, but when he persists, I get mad. Then he accuses me of overreacting and calls me unreasonable for getting mad because he s only joking. If a husband knows what pushes your buttons and makes you yell at him (which I never did before I met him), isn t that playing with your emotions for his own entertainment? I m not the only one he does this to. His daughter has been on the receiving end many times. He claims she s being unreasonable, too. I have asked him to stop, but he doesn t. It s affecting our relationship. I almost feel like he s gaslighting me. What say you, Abby? -- PUSHING MY BUTTONS DEAR PUSHING: I say you are absolutely right. Your husband s behavior is emotionally abusive, not funny. It would be interesting to know how years of that kind of treatment have affected his daughter. The effects of a parent s ridicule can remain with a child into adulthood. Because you haven t been able to get through to him, perhaps you should enlist the assistance of a licensed marriage counselor. If he refuses to go with you, you should go by yourself. And if nothing changes, ask yourself if this is how you are prepared to spend the rest of your life.

16 Page B16 samoa news, Tuesday, June 13, 2017 (A NIGERIAN FOLKTALE adapted by Amy Friedman and illustrated by Meredith Johnson Once upon a time long ago, when the Moon and Sun and Stars were not so far away as they are now, a woman lived all alone. She had no family, and she was terribly poor. To make her home, she collected the leaves of the tombo palm. She built a tiny hut. There she lived quietly for many years, picking berries and plants for her food. She could afford nothing more. But all was well for a long time. She enjoyed the world for all it offered. Above all else, she loved the light of the Moon. In those days, the Moon was full of rich meat, and she was always fat. People worshipped her light and sang her praises. They could not imagine their lives without her. But in those days too, sometimes the Moon came to Earth during the daytime to visit. She loved to visit. She loved observing the way the people lived their lives. She felt great love for all the people, and she especially loved the woman who lived in the hut made of the tombo leaves. One year, drought came to the land. The rivers grew dry. The plants withered. The berries shriveled. And soon the woman in the tombo palm hut began to starve. The Moon saw this, and she felt sorry for the poor woman. She saw how hungry she was. She watched as she grew so skinny, she could barely move outside her hut. The woman was so weak, she could no longer do anything but lie on the mud and wait to die. The Moon thought her heart would break. She decided she would sacrifice some of her own meat to feed the woman. And so she came for a visit. The Moon peeked into the door of the hut, and the poor woman looked up at her, smiling at the sight of one she so loved. Welcome to my humble home, the woman said. Please, come in. The Moon stepped inside and looked down at the woman and said, Please, cut away some of my meat for your food. I have plenty. You can see that I am big and round and full and fat. Nothing will happen to me if you take some away. At first the poor woman resisted, but the moon was forceful. You must eat. You must live, she insisted. And so very carefully, the woman sliced off a tiny piece of the Moon s flesh. The moment she tasted it, she felt stronger. Thank you, oh thank you! I can never offer you enough thanks, the woman said. But the next day, the Moon came again, and once again she insisted the woman eat some of her meat. After that day, the Moon came every day to visit the woman in the palm hut. Take some more, she always said. Take enough to fill you up. Each day, the poor woman sliced off a little more meat, and each day the Moon grew smaller and smaller. When she returned to the sky, she was not quite so bright and fat, and to the others looking up at her, she began to look thin. Then she seemed skinny. She gave off less and less light. The people began to grumble about this. Why is our Moon growing so thin? they whispered among themselves. What has happened to her? Why has she changed? Let us try to fix this trouble. And so people began to follow the Moon when she came to Earth. They followed her to the tombo palm hut. When the people looked inside and saw the woman with her knife carving THE GENEROUS MOON the meat out of the Moon, they understood. They ran back to tell all the others. The very next day, the Moon came to visit again, but when she reached the woman s hut, she saw a crowd standing outside the door. As the poor woman walked outside with her knife, prepared to cut her daily slice of meat, the people began to shout at her. Leave our Moon alone! they cried. Put away your knife! You must not harm our Moon! they urged. She belongs to all of us! The poor woman of the tombo palm hut was terrified, and the Moon was, too. She had never seen the people so angry. She had never heard their voices so shrill and laced with fury. The Moon raced away, back up to the sky, and the woman hurried back inside her hut. After that day, the Moon never again returned to Earth. No one knows what happened to the poor woman in her tombo palm hut, for no one else came to her rescue. But ever since that day, the Moon has chosen to remain in the sky. During the day she hides -- they say she fears the people s anger. Once during each month, she appears to be as fat as ever, round and bright, radiating light and reminding us all of her glorious days, and of her generosity. But as the days pass, the Moon grows thinner and thinner. Some people say she is remembering the woman in the tombo palm hut. They say she grieves for her. Others say she still gives away a part of herself for the sake of others -- that there must be other women carving away the meat that once was the Moon s flesh. But everyone celebrates the day each month when the Moon returns again, as full and fat and bright as she ever was. C Y C Y M K M K
