New Zealand on Tuesday confirmed Ruby Tui, who has been ill with mumps, had been withdrawn from the games and replaced by 19-year-old Alena Saili before the squad checked into the athletes village following its isolation 200 kilometers (120 miles) away on the Sunshine oast. The competition kicks off Friday, and there s nothing Australia s Olympic champions have not thought of in their quest to win the first women s sevens gold on offer at a ommonwealth Games. The Australian squad attended the opening ceremony last week and then moved by choice to Sunshine oast, where archrival and Olympic silver medalist New Zealand was also preparing. Even before they went into camp, coach Tim Walsh held a surprise private team dinner for the players, their families and closest friends to let them know in no uncertain terms what to expect. Five of our players have never been at a multi-sport event so it s about preparing all of athletes as best we can, Walsh said. We held a surprise dinner for the team... and we thought it was important to give the families an insight and to involve them. Families and friends can be an important barrier against outside influences but they can also be a distraction, particularly at a home Games. Walsh said as a group they sat in a room and discussed everything from social media through to sickness and love interests not being a distraction. It was just a matter of discussing what being focused means for us and how we can add another one percent to our mental state. Australia opens its campaign on Friday against Wales. But it s the following game against England that Walsh is most concerned about. Eleven-year-old Welsh table tennis prodigy Anna Hursey bowed out of the ommonwealth Games women s singles event on Tuesday but not before confirming her precocious talent.hursey took just 17 minutes to win her first singles match, but then lost in the second round in straight sets to alaysia s Li Sian Alice hang. POULTER S PERS: Depending on the player, a spot in the asters is often the first perk that gets mentioned upon winning a full PGA Tour event. Finau said when he hurt his ankle he wasn t about to miss his first asters. He was eligible because he shot 64 in the final round of the BW hampionship to make it to the Tour hampionship. That s no longer an issue. The top 12 at the asters automatically return the following year. Finau knew that. ep, 100 percent, he said. Finishing 20th this week, you d like to think I d be back. All but one of the 16 playoff spots has been clinched, with the innesota-denver game on Wednesday deciding the final berth in the postseason. But going into Tuesday, the next-tolast day of the regular season, only five of the 16 seeds have been wrapped up. If Portland beats Utah, the Blazers finish No. 3 in the Western onference. The Jazz could also reach No. 3, but could fall as far as No. 7 depending on the outcome of other games.
