2 THe FaCTS Twitter is one of the most powerful social media tools at your disposal. If you have a message burning inside you and have no clue of how to share it and build a raving fan base, look no further. Just read Twitter s mission statement: To give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers. That s totally in alignment with you as a content creator, author, speaker, coach, movement maker, awesome individual. Twitter has 284 monthly active users and averages 13 million new users per quarter. 80% of Twitter s active users are on mobile and 77% of accounts are outside the United States. This gives you instant global reach. With some consistent, daily work (15 minutes a day) you can attract a target audience and start sharing your message with the world. Another great thing about Twitter is it can have a massive impact on your business, without you having to spend thousands of dollars on ads. Unlike Facebook, where you pretty much have to pay to play these days, Twitter is still helping those who have a message to share. If you re a content creator, Twitter can help you spread your voice like a wild fire. A PERSONAL STORY In October of 2013, I didn t have enough money to run Facebook ads. I wanted to, but if I lost the money I had saved up (about $500), it would have put me in a bad spot financially. Since running ads was not an option for me, I was pacing around my living room, asking myself, How can I share my message and reach my people (my target market) right now, with the tools I currently have? 2

3 IMPORTANT RANT If you want a better life and more opportunities, ask better questions. I learned this from Tony Robbins. I could have sat there and had a pityparty with myself in October of 2013, instead I choose to ask better questions. Honestly, I had every right to feel sorry for myself. I had spent the last 3.5 years of my life trying to master this whole social media world and build a sustainable business... Only to end up at a place of spending close to $30,000, with not much to show for it. I had a few successes in my time, but nothing major. I could have said, Why am I such a failure? Why can I not afford Facebook ads? But I choose a higher path. I said... What can I do right now to share my message with the resources I have? Upon asking this question, the answer I received was this... Why can t you use Twitter? I responded with, How can I use Twitter to share my message with the world and reach potential clients now? The answer... Go follow the Followers of people who are selling more stuff in your industry than you are. So guess what I did... Just that. That my friends, is how I started using Twitter to build a raving fan base of over 12,000 people, reach 100,000 s of people each week, get invited onto the top podcasts, get new paying clients and become a #TwitterRockstar. 3

4 THE GOODS I want you to know, you are great. You are magnificent. You were put here on this earth to make an impact. Many are called. Few will listen. You my friend, are listening and I m honored to share with you the 7 Steps to Build an Audience with Twitter. MISTAKE #1 Using a Logo as a Profile Image. My goodness... Do not make this mistake. People these days want to connect with real people. They are sick and tired of big corporations and long for true, personal connection. Give it to them. Stop hiding behind your brand and show your smiling face with the world. I ve tested this. I helped Nick Unsworth grow his Twitter following to over 11,000 people. I tried growing his Life On Fire Twitter account simultaneously. The dominated brand. Why? Because people wanted to connect with Nick Unsworth, the human, and not the brand. They wanted to connect to the source of the information. SOLUTION #1 Use your smiling face as your Profile Image. The dimensions for the perfect Twitter Profile image is 300 pixels X 300 pixels. 4

5 MISTAKE #2 Having Random Words, Links and Hashtags as Your Bio. Remember... Business is all about relationships. People want to do business with people. So, let them know who in the world you are as a human being. Do not use random words, links and hashtags in your Twitter bio. Instead use three to four words that describe who you are. Here s the perfect formula for crafting your Power Statement: I help WHO on WHAT so that BENEFIT FOR THEM. Here s an example: Twitter Strategist, Coach, Consultant, Former Rockstar and COO of GAMETIME Movement. I help high achievers launch and monetize a business they love in 90 days. You have to keep it short and sweet. You only have 160 characters. People do business with people they like, know and trust. (Thank you Donald Trump for the lesson.) Also, have a Power Statement. Not only do people want to know who you are, they want to know what you can do for them. People on the Internet are looking for solutions. Once you know your target market, tell them how you help them. SOLUTION #2 When writing a Twitter Bio, use three or four words to describe who you are as a human being. Then have a short, clear and concise Power Statement that describes who you help, how you help and why it matters to them. 5

6 MISTAKE #3 Not including a URL in your Profile. Are you kidding me? Why in the world would you have a Twitter account and not have a website link included in your profile? I know this seems pretty basic. Yet, I run across accounts every day that do not have a link to their website. One of the main benefits of using Twitter is generating traffic to your website. This is what helps build your list and just in case you don t know... Having an list of targeted prospects is worth as much as gold to your business. Don t be a bonehead. Include a link to your website. If you don t have a website, use LeadPages (Shout out to my boy Tim Paige over at to create a simple landing page. SOLUTION #3 Include a link to your website when you set up your profile. MISTAKE #4 Having a Generic Twitter Cover Photo or Having None at All Your Twitter Cover photo is prime virtual real estate. You have to take advantage of that bad boy. It s perfect for advertising your brand, your offer, how you can help people, establishing you as an authority, etc. SOLUTION #4 Create a Custom Twitter Cover that is 3,000 pixels wide X 1,000 pixels tall. Twitter gives you different dimensions. Following my advice will make sure your Cover image is crystal clear. The dimensions Twitter gives you will cause your image to be blurry. If you ve been featured on Top Podcasts or in the media, use their logos. It s great for positioning. Essentially, create a virtual billboard that features you and your brand as a celebrity. 6

7 MISTAKE #5 Tweeting Sporadically and Not Adding Value The more times you tweet, the more times people will see you and your brand. The more times you tweet, the more likely people will Favorite and Retweet your tweets. Thus giving you more organic reach and impressions. All of this plays a big role in attracting raving fans and building your brand. I highly encourage you to tweet at least nine times a day. Create a spreadsheet, broken down by day and list out the types of tweets you want to create. They could be a blog post, ReTweet, third party share, quick tip, celebrate today, inspiration quote or an image. All of these make for great tweets. The trick is to know your stance. Know what you stand for. Once you know that, let all your tweets revolve around and serve that stance. It doesn t get any more complicated than this. Know your stance and create great tweets that add value to your fans lives. SOLUTION #5 Tweet nine times a day, Monday through Sunday and make sure your tweets revolve around your stance. 7

8 MISTAKE #6 Waiting and Hoping People will Follow You If you want build a raving fan base, stop waiting for them to come to you. Sure some will, yet I don t like waiting around on chance. Make it happen. Play the Follow Game. Identify people who are authors, speakers, podcasters or thought leaders in your industry. Then go out and find them on Twitter. Go see who s following them and Follow those people. You can assume if the people following them like their message and you have a similar message, then those people may like what you have to say. This is how I built a raving fan base of over 12,000 people. I ve had others who have followed my advice and grew a raving fan base of over 7,000 people in four short months. MISTAKE #7 Buying Followers Do not do this. It s a huge mistake! Why in the world would you go by an audience of people who don t give a flying-flip about what you do or your message? It s makes no sense. Does it build your list? No. Does it make you money? No. It s a complete waste of time and dollars. Instead, do the work, play the Follow Game and build a real audience. You ll be glad you did. SOLUTION #7 Don t buy followers. Play the Follow Game and do the work. SOLUTION #6 Play the Follow Game. Go out and find your target audience and start following them. 8

9 BONUS MISTAKE AND SOLUTION Responding to people with one word answers. Good god... Have you ever went somewhere and tried starting a conversation with someone who responds with one word answers. It s pure torture and should be illegal. To build rapport with people and establish great relationships, you must be a good conversationalist. Many times this means you ask great questions and listen for 95% of the conversation. Bring that skill-set onto Twitter. If you do, you ll see your organic reach and impressions skyrocket and the opportunities for growing your business will be unlimited. When people tweet you and say, Thanks for the follow. Do not respond with, Your welcome. This ends the conversation. Do not be one of those weird cousins at the family get-togethers who create pain staking situations for those who try to converse with them. Instead respond with, You re welcome. What are you working on this year? Or you could say, You bet! What s your biggest challenge in your life? I know... I know... These are deep questions for strangers. Who cares? Create conversations with cool people! Awesome people respond to great questions like this. This also gives you ammunition to guide them in the sales process. Understand the person asking the questions is in control of the conversation. (Thank you Brian Tracy for teaching me the ropes.) By asking great questions you can see if this person is a potential prospect, a referral partner or maybe just someone you can help out Who knows until you have a great conversation. 9

10 CONCLUDING REMARKS I hope this short guide has given you some insight in how to get started with Twitter. These are the eight things I wish I would have known when I got started. It would have saved me a ton of time and many restless nights. Love and Light, Implement the solutions I ve outlined here for you. Do not just read this and say to yourself you ll get to it tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes. Start taking action now. Tweet me Let me know what you learned. Let s be honest... You took the time to read this to gain some clarity and get some direction. Now do the the work. The only way you get results is to do the work. Take massive action. Fail forward. I m done ranting and I honor you for showing up.
