4 Welcome to the West Virginia FIRST LEGO League State Championship Tournament Todd Ensign, Tournament Director Welcome to the greatest STEM competition in West Virginia! Each and every one of you are truly World Class learners. You have demonstrated how to work together as a team, conduct rigorous research, design and program an autonomous robot, and share your newfound knowledge and enthusiasm for learning with others. I hope that you enjoy the day because it is essentially a party we are throwing on your behalf to recognize what amazing leaders and innovators you have become. Please thank your coaches and parents for allowing you to compete, and the judges, referees, and volunteers that make this day possible. Remember, you ARE the next generation of STEM professionals and I for one look forward to working for you someday. Jeff Northey, Judge Advisor On behalf of this year s judges, I d like to welcome you to the 2014 WV FLL state tournament. Judges have the unique pleasure of interacting with the teams as they compete in the areas of Core Values, Project, and Robot Design, and it s a treat to witness the incredible results of your teams efforts. I work here in Fairmont, WV as the Strategic Communications Office Lead for NASA s IV&V Program, and I have the honor of serving as the Judge Advisor for this year s event. Feel free to grab me or any of the three head judges (Jennifer Neptune: Core Values, Jess White: Project, and Justin Smith: Robot Design) if you have any questions or concerns during or after the event. I hope you enjoy yourselves as much as we will. Dr. Earl Scime, Head Referee As head referee, much of my focus this year has been on the robot competition. World Class is a great task environment for the LEGO robots and there are a lot of creative ways for teams to score on the field. Through the scrimmages and the qualifying events this fall, I have seen some pretty impressive machines. I hope they all perform at their best and the teams get to have their "perfect run" at least once at the State Tournament. In 2012, Dr. Scime s work with youth robotics was recognized with the National Woodie Flowers Award, given to a single robotics coach in the world FLL WV Championship Tournament WORLD CLASS SM Challenge 3

5 About FIRST LEGO League (FLL ) In FIRST LEGO League (FLL ), children are immersed in real-world science and technology challenges. Teams design their own solution to a current scientific question or problem and build autonomous LEGO robots that perform a series of missions. Through their participation, children develop valuable life skills and discover exciting career possibilities while learning that they can make a positive contribution to society. About the NASA Robotics Alliance Project The NASA Robotics Alliance Project is located at the NASA Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) Program in Fairmont, WV and supports robotic competitions, off-season events, and trainings across the state. Any interested students, educators, coaches, mentors, or sponsors are encouraged to engage in the currently supported robotics initiatives in West Virginia including Jr. FLL League, FLL, FTC, FRC, and VEX Schedule 7:30-8:30 AM Team Registration Lobby 8:00 AM Coaches Meeting in Conference Rooms, 3rd Floor 8:30-8:45 AM Welcome/Announcements Gym 1 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Practice Table Round Gym 1 9:00 AM -12:15 PM Judging Sessions in the Engineering Technology (ET) Building 10:30 am 3:00 PM Buffet Lunch, 3rd floor cafeteria, tickets for sale on 2 nd floor, (Grill closes at 2pm) 1:00-4:20 PM Official Round Matches-Gym 1 2:00 PM Jr. FLL Teams Arrive and set up in Gym 1 (along the windows) 2:30-4:00 PM Jr. FLL Review Gym 1 4:30 PM Dance Party Gym 1 5:00 PM Awards Ceremony starting with Jr. FLL in Gym FLL WV Championship Tournament WORLD CLASS SM Challenge 4

12 What is the WORLD CLASS SM Challenge? The Project The project portion allows students to look at the science behind the challenge and better understand the work of professionals in that field. Teams encounter challenges similar to those faced by scientists and engineers as they identify a problem and develop an innovative solution. It gives students a chance to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it through research, critical thinking, and creativity. Exposure to different areas of science and technology will also introduce team members to new career options they might never have known about. The 2014 World Class Project assignment, required teams from over 80 countries to identify a problem, create an innovative solution, and share their research when they answered the question, How could we improve the way someone learns Shepherdstown (November 22 nd ) FIRST LEGO League Core Values We are a team. We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our Coaches and Mentors. We know our Coaches and Mentors don t have all the answers; we learn together. We honor the spirit of friendly competition. What we discover is more important than what we win. We share our experiences with others. We display Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition in everything we do. We have fun!!!!!!!!!!! 2014 FLL WV Championship Tournament WORLD CLASS SM Challenge 11
