6 HYDRO DYNAMICS SM Challenge On your mark. Get set. Flow! Drink in the 2017/2018 HYDRO DYNAMICS SM season and learn all about water how we find, transport, use, or dispose of it. In the 2017/2018 FIRST LEGO League Challenge, students age 9 to 16* from 80 countries will make a splash with HYDRO DYNAMICS. What might become possible when we understand what happens to our water? The Project For the Project, each team identified a problem within the human water cycle; created an innovative solution to that problem; and shared their solution with others. The Robot Game In the Robot Game, teams can earn points if the field shows the following at the end of a 2.5-minute match: Mission Pipe Removal Flow Pump Addition Rain Filter Water Treatment Fountain Manhole Covers Tripod Scoring Position Move the Broken Pipe so it is completely in Base. Move a Big Water (one time maximum) to the other team s field *only by turning the Pump System s valve(s). Move the Pump Addition so it has contact with the mat and that contact is completely in the Pump Addition target. Make at least one Rain come out of the Rain Cloud. Move the Filter north until the lock latch drops. Make the Water Treatment model eject its Big Water, *only by moving the Toilet s lever. Make the Fountain s middle layer rise some obvious height and stay there, due only to a Big Water in the gray tub. Flip Manhole cover(s) over, obviously past vertical *without it/them ever reaching Base. Move the inspection camera tripod FIRST LEGO League Qualifier HYDRO DYNAMICS SM Challenge 6
7 Pipe Replacement Pipe Construction Sludge Flower Water Well Fire Water Collection Slingshot Faucet Penalties Move a New Pipe so it is where the broken one started, in full/flat contact with the mat. Move a new pipe. Move the Sludge so it is touching the visible wood of any of the six drawn garden boxes. Make the Flower rise some obvious height and stay there, due only to a Big Water in the brown pot Move the Water Well so it has contact with the mat. Make the fire drop *only by making the Firetruck apply direct force to the House s lever Move or catch Big Water and/or Rain water (one Rain maximum; no Dirty Water) so it is touching the mat in the Water Target, *without the target ever reaching the white Off-Limits Line shown below. Water may be touching the target, and/or other water, but not be touching nor guided by anything else. Each water model is scored as an individual. Move the Slingshot so it is completely in its target. Make the water level obviously more blue than white as seen from above the cup, *only by turning the Faucet handle Before the match starts, the Ref removes the six red Penalty discs from the Field, and holds on to them. If you Interrupt the Robot, the Ref places one of the removed Samples in the white triangle, in the southeast, as a permanent/untouchable Interruption Penalty. 10 About FIRST FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire young people s interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, N.H., the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity inspires young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting Mentor-based programs that build science, technology, math, and engineering (STEM) skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. FIRST provides a progression of four global, after-school programs for K- 12: the FIRST Robotics Competition for Grades 9-12 (ages 14 to 18); the FIRST Tech Challenge for Grades 7-12 (ages 12 to 18); the FIRST LEGO League for Grades 4-8 (ages 9 to 16; ages vary by country); and the FIRST LEGO League Jr. for Grades K-4 (ages 6 to 10). FIRST also operates a research, development, and training facility called FIRST Place at its headquarters in New Hampshire. For our youngest spectators Get pumped for the FIRST LEGO League Jr. 2017/2018 season. In the AQUA ADVENTURE SM Challenge, more than 40,000 children will navigate the uncharted waters of this important resource. Find out where the water you use in your daily life comes from, and what happens on its way to you. Where will this current voyage carry you?
