8 Robot Defined The word robot was coined by a Czech Novelist Karel Capek in 1920, it is the Czech word for worker or servant, A robot is a reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools or specialized devices through variable programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks. (Robot Institute of America, 1979)
9 Laws of Robotics, Isaac Asimov 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
10 Early History of Robotics I Ancient Greek poet Homer described maidens of gold, mechanical helpers built by Hephaistos, the Greek god of metalsmiths. The golems of mid-evil Jewish legend were robot- like servants made of clay, brought to life by a spoken charm. In 1495, Leonardo Da Vinci drew plans for a mechanical man. Real robots of today were only possible in the 1950s and 1960s with the introduction of transistors and integrated circuits.
