4 Technical terms Static and dynamic operation can be distinguished. Most multi beam light barriers are available with both operating modes. Static: An interference of one light beam by the part which is detected causes a change at the output of the amplifier which continues until the interference disappears, i.e. until the object leaves the light barrier. Pulse length is as long as the part stays in the light barrier (lingering period of part). Dynamic: An interference of one light beam by the part which is detected causes a change at the output of the amplifier which is independent of the lingering period and disappears when pulse length is finished (also refer to pulse length which is adjustable between ms. and 00 ms.). Only moving parts can generate a signal with a dynamic light barrier (dynamic operation!). Parts which stay in the light barrier cannot be detected, e.g. parts which stay inside the cross section of a dynamic operating sensor! Operating voltage Every single and multi beam light barrier has a voltage range of either - 4 VDC (-5%/+0%) or of - 0 VDC (-5%/+0%), depending on type. All amplifier types have a voltage regulator which achieves a voltage range as mentioned above and makes independent from fluctuatings of power supply. Today 4 VDC is standard operating voltage in industrial ambiance and applications. -Test VESTER light barriers and amplifiers were subjected extensive and detailed tests and measurements in relationship with the -guideline 89/6/EWG, especially with regards to the -interference according to IEC-80-/4. As sensors do not have their own power supply all measurements were put through with VESTER tool monitoring systems and additional connecting cables and accessories. A certification ( ) is related to the various types stated in the documentation. Dynamic / static: Sensors with amplifiers which combine both operating modes are able to detect fast moving objects and also to generate a defined output pulse in combination with an extension of pulse. Additionally, objects can be detected which stay in the testing section of the sensor. This performance characteristic expands the field of application, especially for multi-beam light barriers, considerably. It even provides a significant increase in safety for the operator in respect to the ejection control of stamping tools. The smallest part that can be detected by a sensor using highest sensitivity. : Resistance will be connected with ground of power principle VESTER single and multi beam light barriers work according to the one-way system in the infrared range. Laser light barriers work in the visible range. The laser power is below mw (category ). Nevertheless, one should not look directly into the laser light beam! The transmitter units and the receiver units are facing each other. With receiver-transmitter types, they are in separate housings, with fork and frame light barriers, they are in common housings with an invariable setting of the optical axis. Both transmitter and receiver elements are selected, categorized and arranged in an optimum combination according to their sensitivity. This allows for a high product quality with low discrepancies in series production. Output supply. In active state the output transistor of the amplifier switches resistance to the (+) - pole of power supply. operating sensors are state of the art and used in many industrial applications and SPC's. NPN: Resistance will be connected with the (+) - pole of power supply. In active state the output transistor of the amplifier switches resistance to ground of power supply. Housing Every fork and frame light barrier is manufactured of anodised aluminium which achieves high stability for many years and protects against electromagnetic radiation. The optoelectronic elements are protected with scratch-proof hard glass. Every light barrier can be fastened in many different ways either with holes in the body or with special rails and protective frames/protective housings.

5 Technical terms Pulse Extension Many SPS applications require the extension of short output pulses of sensors to a signal with a defined duration (pulse duration), since otherwise it could not be recognized as such a signal due to long program cycle periods. This pulse extension is standard with all dynamic/static amplifier types which are mainly applied in multi-beam light barriers. The setting range is between ms and 00 ms. The default setting is 0 ms. A pulse extension is optionally available for the plug-in constant light and chopped light amplifiers S..., for single light barriers. The switching frequency of the light barrier depends, of course, on the output pulse duration, which perhaps must be taken in consideration with fast counting processes. For one-way light barriers with digital operating amplifiers the active function is as follows: bright function: The output transistor of the amplifier is active if a sufficient quantity of light is affected from the receiver. There is no part between transmitter and receiver. dark function: The output transistor of the amplifier is active if the receiver is sufficiently interfered. One light beam must be interfered with multi beam light barriers. A part stays between transmitter and receiver. With most light barriers the function can be changed according to the corresponding application (bright-dark function). Circuit Single beam as well as multi beam light barriers are available with two amplifier types. Constant light amplifier: The constant light amplifier supplies the transmitter of the light barrier with direct current which affects the receiver as direct (not modulated) light rays. Therefore light barriers with constant light amplifier are especially qualified for high speed counting. For special applications amplifiers with a frequency of more than 5 KHz are available. Standard sensors have a frequency of > KHz. With transmitter-receiver versions of light barriers in which, due to their application, the distance between transmitter and receiver is considerably higher than 40 mm, the higher dependence on external light of the constant light transmitter affects the results whenever intense external light or ambient light is to be expected. Direct radiation into the receiver must be avoided by appropriate measures. All plug-in constant light amplifiers S-... for single beam light barriers of the plug-in types are equipped with a contamination and setting indicator. In standard operation, this red LED is switched according to the status of the light beam. Red LED off: Light beam free or correct setting Red LED on: Light beam with interference by an object. In the case of contamination or wrong setting of transmitter and receiver unit of transmitter-receiver types, the red LED lights permanently, especially when there is not interference of the light beam by an object. Chopped light amplifier: The chopped light amplifier supplies the transmitter of the light barrier with modulated light of an evaluate frequency. The receiver detects only the light which belongs to this frequency. Therefore the chopped light amplifier is independent against ambient light and achieves a high reliability against contamination. The chopped light amplifier is favoured with light barriers of PG-type especially when the light barrier is used with distances of more than 40/50 mm between transmitter and receiver, depending on type, or e.g. in oil mist ambiance. Its main field of application is with transmitterreceiver infrared light barriers, in which high distances between transmitter unit and receiver unit are to be implemented. Due to the switching frequency, the chopped light amplifier is less appropriate for very fast moving objects. Maximum switching frequency khz. The status of light beam is indicated by a yellow LED at amplifier types in separate housing as follows: Yellow LED off: light beam is interfered Yellow LED on: light beam is not interfered This indication is independent of the bright-dark function.

6 Single-Beam Light Barriers with internal amplifier K All fork light barriers have an internal constantor chopped light amplifier. A very compact fork body has been achieved by miniaturization the electronics. In the more detailed classification, there are nine series which can be distinguished by the size and shape of the fork body. Five series are available as infrared fork light barriers, two series as laser fork light barriers, and one series as fork light barrier with visible light beam (red light/650 nm). Additionally, there is one transmitter-receiver version of a laser light barrier. All types provide the bright-dark function either by means of a switch which is fixed on the fork body, or by means of a connecting cable. The wiring is done by a -pin M8 socket or by a cable with free cable end. Application (tool with central tool plug box) Double Thickness Feed central tool plug box WS-8 tool adapter tool protection system For tools, supplied with a central tool plug box WS-8, the compact shape of 6 mm and 8 mm of the PMI/PDI- and PSI-types especially when a connection with a central tool plug box is established is of advantage. The PKI/PKL 0 mm-types as well as the transmitter-receiver laser light barrier PGI-L... are preferred in assembly lines, e.g. for position control. Costs can be reduced, especially when a connection with a central tool plug box is established. Especially when more than two or three light barriers are required in a follow-on composite tool, e. g. two fork light barriers per module for double thickness control and one for feed control. The fork light barriers are connected directly with the central tool plug box. The installation of an external amplifier is not required. The fork light barrier can be connected directly with the central plug. K

K Two types of amplifiers are available for plug-in type light barriers which have a separate housing to connect the plug-in type light barriers. An amplifier can be used with different sensor types, depending on application. A plug-in type transmitter-receiver infrared light barrier for feed control is mounted inside the tool and stays there after tool change. Transmitter and receiver are mounted in the top and bottom part of the tool. They belong to these parts when the tool is disassembled. The required plug-in constant light or chopped light amplifier can belong to the machine and can be firmly installed in the pressroom. Costs can be reduced, especially if less or only one light barrier is required in a tool by using the P...-/PG..-S plug-in types. According to the number of used sensors per tool, the same number of amplifiers per machine must be supplied. Different types of light barriers, e.g. fork types as well as transmitter-receiver types can be connected to the amplifier. The cables should be mounted directly on the tool to avoid damage during tool change. Therefore a mounting block AS is available. Pictogrammes: Feed Position K

For the 4-pin M socket many different cables are available. The mounting is realised by a holder and two rubbermetal connections which are directly screwed to the frame body. 46 Multi-Beam Light Barrier DHS 80 for Loop The loop control DHS 80 with non-contact operation and micro controller is the result of many years of experience in the field of optosensorics, especially in the detection of thin materials during the coiling and uncoiling of continuous strip material. The desire to coil thin and perforated stamped strips from a reel, and also to coil them on a reel, in a uniform process and without jerking, is as old as the coiling technology itself. The loop control has the function of controlling the coiling drive and thus to guarantee a continuous operation free of vibrations in dependence on the decreasing or increasing diameter of the coils. Only in this way it can be guaranteed that, e.g., high-sensitive strip material can be coiled on a reel, or from one reel to another, without damage. Additionally, the change to another strip type should be possible without additional setting requirements of the sensor or the control system. The system is to work reliably independent of the material. Additionally, the service life of the drive components can be extended considerably. The DHS 80 multi-beam light barrier is a completely new development, especially in respect to the programmable amplifier assembly. Uncoiling machine TAB-500 S with DHS 80 (Firm: TF Wickeltechnik) Channels Within a range of 80 mm, 8 infrared light beams of one-way light barriers are arranged in such a way that only one material loop per cycle can pass the light beam. Jittering movements of the strip will not affect the function, since it is insignificant whether the individual beam is passed once or several times. Exactly one output value between 0 and 0 VDC per programming adapter can be assigned to each light beam. This value is provided as a rated value for the drive (frequency converter) by the output amplifier assembly until the strip loop passes another light beam. A continuous operation of the coiling drive thus can be guaranteed. Vibrations which could have negative effect on the service life of the motor will not occur with the DHS DHS 80 with programming adapter K5.5
