Houston Photochrome Club Volume XLIX No. 1 January MEETING for JANUARY Join us at the meeting on January 9 at 7:00 PM at the Tracy Gee Community Center, 3599 Westcenter Drive, which is one block inside Beltway 8 between Westpark and Richmond. They first part of the evening will be the competition and judging of entries. Following a coffee and cookie break we will discuss the images that were entered. Suggestions by other photographers help to expand knowledge of what makes a good image. If you don t participate you are losing a grand opportunity, so enter your images. Be sure to get your entries to Philip Tan by Saturday January 4 Instructions and assignments are on page 3 and in your Member handbook (Directory) James Gamble Deadline for digital submission All digital entries must be sent to Philip Tan pt-chromer@earthlink.net by January 4 Entries received after that will not be eligible for January Competition FYI the deadline is always the Saturday before the regular meeting. The new year is here and the beginning of a new year of activity for Houston Photochrome Club. Our new President, James Gamble, will be searching for volunteers to fill the various positions that keep our club running smoothly. When James asks you to fill a position please give it serious consideration. Remember the Club can only be as effective as the members who are willing to work. ATTENTION MEMBERS Dues for 2014 are now due. The dues for the coming year 2014 are due. Please complete the form on page 5 and send it to Carmen Sewell, Treasurer along with your check for the appropriate amount. Dues must be paid by February 1 in order to compete in the competition in February. If you joined after July 1, 2013 and paid the full annual amount those dues will be prorated for A separate statement will be sent to those members. 1

2 A Huge Thank You To Jane and Joe Smith for Hosting a lovely Christmas Party for the Club. If you weren t there you missed a fun time. AWARDS NIGHT The End of the Year Awards Night will be held at the Tracy Gee Center on January 23 at 7PM. The images that have been entered will be shown and the winners honored. There will be light refreshments and time to visit with your friends. This is a new format for our Awards Celebration so mark it on your calendar and let s have a large turnout for this event. Attention Lightroom Users, The next meeting of the HPC Lightroom SIG will be Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. The location will be at the home of James Gamble at Grand Bluff Grove, Richmond, Texas The next meeting will be a hands-on workshop of Lightroom workflow from input to output. Please feel free to bring your laptops with Lightroom installed and work along. Also bring along some images you can import into Lightroom to work with. I will have some sample images available we can all use to examine the features in Lightroom's Develop Module. When you RSVP please indicate which version of Lightroom you are using. Also if you would like to bring a dish (snack, hors d'oeures, dessert, etc,) please indicate with RSVP. As before this SIG meeting is limited to 12 Lightroom users. Looking forward to another fun and educational meeting! James 2 Quick Tips that every photographer should know. Some have been mentioned before, but as with all good things, they bear repeating. 1. REAR FOCUS BUTTON - Many cameras will allow you to remove the autofocus function from the shutter release button and move it to another button on the back of the camera. This allows you to be in total control of focusing at all times, and will prevent the frustration of the camera constantly searching for focus each and every time you press the shutter button. Most owner's manuals are poor at explaining how to make this Custom Function change, but often a Google search will provide a good explanation on the web. 2. PRESERVE MEMORY CARD LIFE - Never delete or put an image in the trash when you are out shooting. Doing that will potentially harm the memory card and shorten its life. Leave all images on the card until you have been able to download them onto your computer. Then view each image on the computer screen and delete as needed. And then FORMAT MEMORY CARDS IN THE CAMERA - After you have downloaded all images from the card and have made a backup as well, put the memory card back into the camera and re-format it. Memory cards should be re-formatted each and every time you head out to shoot. Do not just delete or trash images from the card after downloading, since that does not entirely remove the information from the card. Reformatting effectively removes all data and provides you with a clean slate each time you use the card. Cookies for January Carmen Sewell

3 Assignment Definitions January Nature Plant Life Just what it says...but remember this is a nature category so cultivated plants are not eligible Pictorial Zoo Life Images of animals taken at a zoo will be the subject here. Typical zoo activities such as feeding time, interactive play or bath time etc depending on the animal..looking Ahead to February Nature Pictorial. The Board will meet this month to select the categories for the coming year and they will be announced by special as soon as possible Competition Assignments Month 2014 January Month 2014 January Nature Plant Life Pictorial Zoo Life Featherfest--Galveston April 10-13, 2014 This is a great nature and photography opportunity for those of us who live near Galveston. If you want to get to go on the best field trips, be prepared to sign up for them on Dec 2nd when sign up begins. Details are at the website. An added bonus is that the descriptions of the places to go at this web site is worth a visit to the site even if you do not plan on going to Featherfest. Check everything out at: FieldTrips_2014.php The workshops that are available are great too: Workshops_2014.php 3 ATTENTION: All Competition Participants Images must be submitted according to club guidelines or your image may not be included in the monthly competition Please follow the sizing instructions carefully: A horizontal image cannot be longer than 1024 pixels along the horizontal side; A vertical image cannot be longer than 768 pixels along the vertical side. ( Vertical images cannot be sized 1024 pixels along the vertical side!) The size of the JPEG image is not to exceed 1MB.( See above for pixel size.) Rename the image according to the guidelines below. For example: A Nature Assignment of birds by John Brown would appear as NA_Bird_BrownJ.jpg ( NG for Nature General, PA for pictorial Assigned, PG for Pictorial General and BW for monochromes) DO NOT use first names only, nicknames or initials for identification. Also, the size of the title is limited to 35 characters when naming images. It is important that the guidelines for naming files be followed when submitting images for the monthly competitions otherwise you run the risk of not being credited with your entries. Images that are not easily identified will be discarded.
