4 Competition Assignments for 2015 Month Pictorial Nature April Abstracts Birds May Architecture Moving Water June Lights at night Wildflowers July Vehicles Leading Lines Aug Outside your +Comfort Zone Butterflies/Moths (may include Larval forms) Sept Cultivated Flora Sunrise/Sunset Oct Urban Scapes Macro Nov Creative Trees/Leaves Dec Churches/ Mission Insects/Spiders (No butterflies) Jan 16 Landscapes Reflections Photography Exhibition The BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition will be in Houston, TX from January 30, 2015 through May 31, 2015 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Details are below. Free to museum members and available to others with a General Admission. Information about the museum can be found here: option=com_content&view=article&id=2&itemid=2 James Gamble is putting together a trip to the BBC Wildlife Exhibition (see article ion the preceding page). He will be sending information as soon as it is finalized. Assignments for April Nature Birds: The focal point of the image is a bird or a group of birds in a natural setting. The hand of man should not be present in the image. Interest and aesthetic appeal must be present in nature images. A posing bird is good, but a bird doing something is even better Pictorial Abstracts: Abstract Art (photography) can be defined as having an intellectual and affective artistic content that depends solely on intrinsic form rather than on narrative content or pictorial representation. It is a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Looking Ahead to May Nature Moving Water: The image must capture moving water. In nature, moving water can be the surf, waterfalls, streams, rain, droplets of water, etc. The water can be blurred or frozen, but the viewer must sense that it is moving. The movement can be impacted by the shutter speed used to capture it and other photo techniques. Pictorial Architecture: Architectural photography is the photographing of buildings and similar structures that are both aesthetically pleasing and accurate representations of their subjects 4

5 Wildflower Trip Bluebonnets: The "Blue Triangle" (Hempstead, Brenham, to Navasota) As of March 25, about half way in the blooming cycle. Should be first good weekend, April 4-5th. Probably full strength by April I will be going this week, April 4th and will report back. Eric Other Bluebonnet Reports Charleen reports that she went out last weekend and found wonderful fields of Bluebonnets & other areas of mixed flowers. south of San Antonio. I-35 South around all the little towns in that area and got off the main roads and wandered around the back roads. Check out "Lucky" Road South (there's a South & North Lucky Rd.) There is an exit off I-35 and turn off on various side roads from there and also between Somerset and Poteet. There were some red poppies around Pearsall, but she didn't have time to really investigate that area. She followed some of the areas mentioned below in Gary Regner's posts on the web. Big Bend Bluebonnets Well it rained in Big Bend this spring turning the desert green and popping out the wildflowers. The bluebonnets were exceptional as were the desert marigolds, but there were a lot of others as well and the cactus is going to be brilliant. Big Bend has its own variant of bluebonnet which is about 16 inches tall and a very dark blue. These images were shot March Carmen I think the flowers will still be good in these areas this coming weekend, but then probably past after that. I believe (hope) flowers will be next in the Fredericksburg/Llano area. Plan to head that way mid-april & see. Charleen 5
