7 From the Desk of Page 7 Three Actions You Should Take to Create More Compelling Images I m going to talk about three very simple ideas that hopefully will give you immediate results in creating more compelling images. Before I get started, however, it is important to first understand the meaning of composition. Composition in photography simply means arranging elements in a way that suits the core idea which forms a particular visual outcome. A good habit to develop before pressing that shutter button is to slow down and think through these three steps of arrangement to fit the style of your composition. So let s take a look at these three important actions. Subject Placement The first thing to empathize is subject placement. I know, most of you are probably thinking about the rule of thirds. Yes, the rule of thirds is a very important guideline to follow but there is more to consider. For new members just getting started with photography, the rule of thirds separates your frame into sections of thirds vertically and horizontally. The concept is to place your subject on one of the dividing lines for a more visually pleasing arrangement. It usually does a very good job but not in every instance. What I have found to be better than the rule of thirds is the Golden Ratio. If you look up the golden ratio on the internet chances are you re going to be lambasted with a whole bunch of mathematical equations. Just look past them. I don t understand the math and don t pretend too, so fortunately it s not important to know when using the Golden Ratio. What is important is that you become familiar with that spiral and be able to visualize it in your viewfinder (see below). It s too bad camera manufacturer s aren t incorporating this into their viewfinders. It is said to be more visually pleasing when placing the subject over the smallest part of the spiral or slightly more towards the center of the frame. Give it a try. Leading Lines Next is leading lines. It s a great technique and shouldn t be overlooked. Look for obscure leading elements that stretch into the bottom of the frame that naturally lead the viewer s eyes into the photograph. For example, are there pathways that lead into the scene, clouds that stretch into the top of the frame, bridges, star trails or other elements to use as leading lines? Always be on the lookout and they don t always have to be at the bottom of your frame either. Less Is More The last thing has to do with less clutter and removing things from the frame. Many times photographers think they have to include a foreground. This is not true. If there is not an interesting foreground to add don t include it. Think about how you can improve the image without a foreground. This may involve getting out the telephoto lens and shooting scenes up close. Each element of an image should add something to the overall photograph. If it doesn t then leave it out. Look for distractions. If you find one, remove it if possible or recompose. I hope these tips will help. If you take anything at all away from this, just remember to slow down and think through your composition before pressing that shutter button.
