3 Welcome to Art Journaling Made Easy Tangie Baxter defines art journaling as, A visual diary record keeping combined with creativity. A place to record your thoughts, memories, and emotions through images, art and words There are NO rules! As we turn our heads to a new year, I often find myself reflecting on a One Little Word adopted by Ali Edwards to focus on and reflect. For our December strategy, we ll combine the style of Art Journaling with the prompt of One Little Word to craft a page centered on visual creativity and art from the heart. We ll explore the following techniques: How to develop a mixed media background using a fitted brushwork process How to apply a variety of blend modes to embellishments to support our page Creating a tri-stamped text effect Adding photos incognito to for a punch of color Let s get started! 4 Lesson 1: Fitted Brushwork on Canvas Our first step is to create the canvas/backdrop for our art journaling page. Page 4 of 10

5 a. Fit the Brushwork Background i. Start with a New workspace sized 12 x 12 inches, 300 ppi with a white background. ii. Choose three coordinating, colorful mixed-media based patterns (not geometric patterns). iii. Create a new layer. iv. Select the Brush tool. v. Choose a mixed media brush sts_mixedmedia_21 as provided in the class strategy.. vi. Set the Brush Properties. Choose a black foreground color. Increase Spacing to 169% (this value will vary based on how big the brush is when in use.) vii. Toggle Shape Dynamics and increase Size Jitter to 30% and Angle Jitter to 50%. (PSE Users: Manually rotate the Angle Dial randomly as you brush for a mixed look.) viii.paint with the brush on the new layer. Be sure to leave gaps where there is no brushwork just empty space. ix. Create a second new layer. x. Paint with the brush to cover some of the gaps in the first layer. xi. Create a final third new layer. xii. Paint with the brush to cover more of the gaps in the second layer. xiii.drag the three patterns into the document. xiv.clip each paper to the brushed layers. Page 5 of 10

6 b. Add Background Elements i. Use pre-made brushwork elements as-is. Place them within the canvas and rotate or reposition to fill in empty areas. ii. Use pre-made brushwork elements in negative. Place them within the canvas and apply a Color Dodge blend mode. iii. Use embellishments as color hot-spots. Place them within the canvas and apply a Color Burn blend mode. Page 6 of 10

7 Lesson 2: Tri-Stamped Text In this video, you ll learn how to create a tri-stamped text effect using Stroke and Fill Opacity. Page 7 of 10

8 a. Create the Tri-Stamped Text i. Select the Horizontal Type tool and choose the font Blackout (Midnight). Set the size to 120 pts (or larger) and the color to white. ii. Type your word. iii. Reduce Fill Opacity to 0%. (PSE Users: Use shortcut keys F Shift 0 or navigate to the FX Menu and select Styles > Visibility > Hide.) iv. Open the Layer Styles or Effects menu and add a Stroke. Set the size to 5 px; Position: Center; Color: dark grey (Hex #5b5b5b). v. Duplicate the layer three times for a total of three stroked layers. Toggle off the visibility of the bottom text layer int he Layers Panel. vi. Slightly rotate and reposition two of the stroked text layers. vii. Merge all the stroked layers together. Apply a Color Burn blend mode. viii.toggle on the last text layer. Reduce it s Fill Opacity to 50%. (PSE Users: Use shortcut keys F Shift 5 or navigate to the FX Menu and select Styles > Visibility > Ghosted.) b. Add Additional Elements i. Select a few pieces to fill in empty space on your art journaling layout. c. (Optional) i. Add journaling. Apply a Soft Light or Overlay blend mode to hide your journaling. Page 8 of 10

9 Lesson 3: Photo Punch Complete your page using photos to add a punch of color and depth. Page 9 of 10

10 a. Add the Photo i. Add the photo to the layout and position it in the area you feel needs a punch of color. b. Fitted Brushwork Photo i. Create a new layer. Clip the photo to the new layer (it should disappear). ii. Select the Brush tool and choose the sts_mixedmedia_21 brush using the same settings from Lesson 1. iii. Stamp in places where you want color to appear. iv. Apply a Color Burn blend mode to add drama and depth. Page 10 of 10
